Don't like Mod's editing threads. Edit: This topic not started by me. Topic created by moderator and my post moved to it.

I get a little bit frustrated when mods go back and edit or delete other people's posts, regardless of the subject matter.

It's nice to know who you are dealing with on a public forum. If posts are deleted, I can't see that users edited and deleted history, and don't know that it's someone I should avoid (or trust).

Watching other people argue can be very informative, or even just entertaining. It's also how ideas are discussed, and just because it gets heated doesn't mean it needs to disappear. It's a public forum, short of blatant trolling, racism, or being completely off topic, who is anyone to decide what I can, or can't read.

Locking a thread is necessary at times. I get that. I don't think that ANY thread should be locked, but I understand the reason why it's done. That being said, if you (anyone reading this, not attacking anyone specifically) don't like what's being discussed, then don't read it. It's irritating when I have something useful or productive to add to the conversation, but it's locked. It's like two people being on a debate stage and one not being given a microphone.

Free speech should be protected. There isn't much of it left anymore.

Just my un-asked-for 2¢.
I agree 100% with all of this.

The problem with editing a post is that you are now putting words in someone's mouth. One of my posts was edited and the edit made me look like a moron and unable to spell instead of mildly abrasive, which is exactly what I was trying to be. I ended up going back into the post and adding to the post that it was edited and it was basically not my message anymore.

The message should remain unaltered and a warning inserted into the post that the language is in contravention of the forums code of conduct and a notification of a strike sent to the member in violation.

Edit: This is just kind of crazy

Since the post was off-topic and no one took the "gentle" hints to take those issues into a new thread on this forum -- I've taken the liberty to move it so the other thread can stay on topic.

This is a pretty important topic and it deserves its own thread.

The problem with editing a post is that you are now putting words in someone's mouth.
No. Edits should never "put words in you mouth". Any such edit is wrong and should be reported.
Typically edits just delete the offense, although that can leave some things hanging.

Edits ONLY happen when in addition to something disrespectful is some valid viewpoint. Otherwise we just delete the post.

...made me look like a moron and unable to spell instead of mildly abrasive...
Mod's don't like editing posts either and only do so when they break the terms and conditions and have to.
Typically they have to be reported by someone that particularly found them offensive too -- mods aren't everywhere and don't read everything.
Don't want them edited, the best advice is to not break the T&Cs. Breaking the T&Cs makes you look far worse than anything else, and repeated offenses will get you banned.

The message should remain unaltered and a warning inserted
Sorry but no. I'm not sure what post you're referring to, but any threats of physical violence, racism, name-calling, etc. should be removed.
No one wants to read that crap and whoever it was directed at shouldn't have to suffer it.

I appreciate the work mods do. Thank you to all of them. :) They have a tough job, and without them forums like this would quickly degrade into flame wars, arguments, fighting. That is not useful, not fun to read, or participate in. Forums have ALWAYS had rules and moderators, even before the Internet.

I do not always agree with decisions mods make, but I always respect them and never argue with them. For those that like participating in arguments and fighting, please move on to Facebook.

Nicely said

moderators shouldn’t edit a post though.

moderators have the authority to maintain discipline. Discipline isn’t punishment it’s a modicum of behavior.

if there’s a post that breaks the rules that’s not free speech it’s breaking the rules. It should be deleted without bias but not edited.

something I wrote got deleted once
I was pretty annoyed. I wasn’t making fun of anybody just responding to and rolling with the flow thing. But that’s the moderator’s call. I will say without some of the other ‘baloney’ people have written that hasn’t been deleted I might not have been irritated. Or nearly as irritated.

I don’t want to be a moderator

If you don't like your posts edited, don't put things in them which require editing.

While there is a gray space between allowed and disallowed, the terms and conditions are clear enough to stay well away from even the gray area.

If you feel it's necessary to write things which could be interpreted as against the terms and conditions, re-write your content so it stays firmly out of the gray area, or avoid posting altogether. If you think it's too subjective, spend some time observing people who appear to be able to post frequently without ever having an edit or deletion and consider why, if it's subjective, some people are able to communicate without falling afoul of the rules and how you can emulate them.

It's not rocket surgery.

Im kinda lost on the topic. Have gotten aggravated not being able to edit my zillion typos. For real.

Other than that, its really up to a person to be offended or not; although, absolutely no room for personal attacks. Lame ya know.

A person could be sleepy, in bad mood or even drunk... haha who knows. Who cares.

I try to throw in my 2 cents from personal experience hoping help a struggling person that ended up here ya know. Probably good idea to remember how u ended up at a forum and why u come back. Personally, greatful for the help and try to return the favor.

As a mod on another forum based in Thailand (recently expanded to cover all of ASEAN) I know exactly what the issues are.

We only edit a members post if it is generally useful but just has a minor flame or a profanity (Google doesn't like naughty words and we are largely advertising funded). Really bad posts just get deleted.

As far as members editing their posts is concerned there's a 20 minute "edit window" where editing is allowed before the post becomes "permanent". If any edits are needed afterwards members can hit "Report" and request any on-duty mod to do or PM a particular mod who they know and ask him to do the edit.

It works pretty well but it's busy forum with a fair number of mods available.

Very helpful info. Thank you. I will be sure to look for typos within the 20 minute window. (Not used to phone tiny keyboard...)

Btw, think u meant Asia, not Asean? Or maybe all Asian countries cuz places like India are part of Asia?

Unimportant but does make excellent point as to why ability to edit things like that are helpful.

Free speech should be protected. There isn't much of it left anymore.

Free speech as protected by the first amendment in the United States applies to political speech in the public square*. Just because this forum can be used in public, it is privately owned and the ultimate purpose of the site is to generate revenue for Will Prowse by driving traffic to his videos. It is in his best interest to keep discussions as positive and informative as possible because fights, mudslinging, etc... reflect badly on his brand.

Speech on this site is not protected speech, nor should anyone believe it should be.

* I should also point out that protected means protected from interference by government. It does not mean you should not face repercussions for your speech in the form of boycotts, or having the site owner editing or deleting your post.

This is basic civics.

F.Y.I. Mods no longer have editing powers. Only Will does.

Don’t abuse it, and it may stay.

Dang sweetie, seems that person hit a nerve. Hehe.

Rather ridiculous, and quite arrogant, to think one country's constitution is applicable to any portion of the global web. Embarrassed as USA vet to see that.

U know, like in some countries I, as a female, wouldnt even be allowed on web. Point is no one country's whatever overrides any website's guidelines. For example, ppl were abusing yahoo news comment section so yahoo just shut it down. News but u cant comment anymore.

I mean its pretty simple = abide by forum guidelines (code of conduct) or dont participate. Freedom to type whatever u want is irrelevant to being allowed to participate. Personally, anybody directing negative comments at a poster, I would ban. No playing. Hit the road.

Btw, didnt know this forum was about W Prowse. Im not a youtube watcher. Its a last resort. I had a solar problem and went there. His videos were 1st. Watched few but when didnt mention UL, left.

Anyway, I found this forum by accident. Found out later was created by Will. Was unaware generated revenue but ok whatever. Pretty much all sites do nowadays.

Stay on topic and take what u need, leave the rest. Simple.

Nope, it's ASEAN - Association of South East Asian Nations - https://asean.org/

BTW The 20 minute window is on our forum, I think the abilty to self-edit here is unlimited.
Ah thx. I was like oh better hurry to fix typo. Whew. Relief.

Didnt know acronym ASEAN so thx. Thats interesting but my geography... well needs an update. LOL

Indeed.

If the government hosted this forum, it would be different. Privately hosted forum, appealing to first amendment is not applicable here.

I have feelings too. Everyone does, despite what some occasionally claim. I try to keep the angry and rude ones in check while composing messages on this forum because 1) it’s humane 2) i selfishly believe it will benefit me by encouraging participation on this forum 3) why not, it’s fun to be wholesome online, almost contrarian 4) i like doing it 5) most people here are just trying to survive and thrive in this covid hell world, and i like to think if i participate with a wholesome mindset assisting them might even be possible in some cases when my experience overlaps with their needs

I don’t pay for the operation of this site, how can I expect them to act as my dedicated personal government run blog? This way of thinking.. Some people in the USA even believe the government should use violence to coerce people to host slurs and hate speech LOL. That’s not America. That is a sad form of slavery.

Intensely grateful for the moderation and administration team of this forum. Grouchy people trying to build their electric system and house from the ground up with half the budget they need while also trying to dodge the XYZ strains of covid.. I’m amazed people aren’t being even more mean spirited to each other as the human race continues to struggle forward.

Personally, I do like the change of no editing.

Put a warning label on it, or delete it outright if it’s harmful.

Having a middle ground can upset people.

Needing to repost the useful content because an entire post was deleted for harmful content, is better than, editing the post, in my opinion.

Just sharing some feelings, trying to keep it chill. I do hope this website doesn’t turn into some weird right wing hate speech safe space.

In my experience, .gov sites are worst of all at restricting. Now, the commentator sites like Fox News let ppl duke it out. Only step in when threats start flying. (Think they want to see what topics rouse ppl up).

So right about grouchy and COVID. I made a similar pt about could be in bad mood, sleepy or even drunk. Point is: reader has no idea. I watched 2min of Wills recent video then came here aggravated. I called an airline greedy capitalist pigs... Luckily responder recognized my mood and just calmly said thx for view. It was actually funny... in hinesight.

LOL. I logged out.

Really? Rt wing? Interested at ur viewpoint. Im so far left ppl say gonna fall off the edge lol. What I mean is thinking everybody feeling big brothers grip SQUEEZE. Im sick of it.

Ok but the mods here aren’t big brother

This “feeling attacked” feeling is valid but I’m seeing people pinch each other repeatedly and cry fowl play when someone noticed they were in a bad mood.

No harm no fowl but let’s be real. Being grouchy doesn’t give Anyone a free platform!

I’m tired of sick incentive schemes bringing inhumanity into the daily life of people, and I dunno how to comprehensively address how messed up things have become. Wish I could offer really good solutions.

One topic that might be latent in the discussion is anger being a proxy for righteousness. There’s a lot to be righteously upset about in the world right now, but being upset doesn’t automatically mean the message is profound and important to protect.

Anyways, I appreciate people coming to this place. If it turns into some place where being mean spirited becomes the norm, it’s possible for me to engage in a different space. Freedom!

I don’t like reading threads full of people arguing over their ego being bruised by someone not following their advice to the Tee. It’s boring. Would like that to become less.

For the record, wrote all this out while hungry. Miraculously, the content is probably a bit more rough around the edges. I’m trying to be direct while also not being mean spirited. Seeing so many threads derailed by “well you didn’t take my advice properly” or “well that’s not my preferred solution so i’m offended” type mundane stuff. It’s sad, and asking for it to change feels sad too. People have various needs and abilities and budgets and climates etc etc..

to cap off this garbage post, i agree that editing shouldn’t be an option. it’s too much power. flag or delete only! hopefully best way to reduce sorrow and workload.
