Extending a part worn battery bank

Earth quake.
Bingo.....second strongest recorded at the time, 9.3 Richter 9.8 moment magnitude, yep quite a ride

Lower 48’ers were flocking to the airport to get the hell out, My family picked up over a hundred parcels from those fleeing....Cant say how much we made from those parcels not chump change.....

Us native Alaskan’s stuck it out they dont call us sourdoughs for nothin, Alaska was much better when the Cheechako’s left

So you do know what incident i am referring to?
I sure do. While it is one of the lesser known stories it is the only invasion of the US in WWII, Attu and Kiska islands.

Oops! I thought you were talking about your Dad's service in WWII. ?

I was writing while you posted and I missed that, here is what I was writing..

Not quite, I wasnt born yet, The good friday earthquake just off southern Alaska. on good friday 1964 5:33 pm
9.3 Richter Scale, 9.8 Moment Magnitude, On of the strongest in recorded history. Was but a teen but very experienced in communications as I grew up in a Amateur Radio Family, helped set up and operate a emergency radio station at Civil Defense Headquarters, The airport tower was destroyed, ma bell was done for, The police could not dispatch units, Nobody was talking on the Radio except a bunch of radio buffs, pilots, airmen, etc. We all chipped in.
FCC guy walked in and asked if I has a License to operate the station, sheepishly I said no, He said you do now....1st Class RTO, never did go back and take the test, it was a “front lines” test..

I did miss the date on an earlier post , it was April 12, 1964, not 1963 as i said earlier

and @boondox........my Father was in a Army unit called “the sea scouts” also “Casner’s Cutthroats” so very much a WWII hero....spied on and sabotaged the invaders from behind their front lines yes so many Americans do not know that the Japanese did invade the U.S. proper, we were a territory at the time, like the phillipines but we were on the North American continent....so the only invasion of Mainland America, pretty much lost in history

I knew of the earthquake, I wasn’t familiar of its name, it’d make a pretty good documentary.

Btw Wikipedia says it was March 27, not quite April, maybe due to time zones were different back then?

Could well be that i was reading a report dated April, 12

Alaska has been moved into one time zone, it used to span three back then.

I had forgotten the exact date but I cannot forget that earthquake. It is burned in memory....so I blew it’s date twice now, but it was on Good Friday.....I have to admit that I was scared to s**t, but I had to focus and retrive my little sister from the house which was bumped off its foundation. It definitely got everybody’s attention. None of will ever forget it, Quite a few years later I was in LA when the Northridge quake devistated parts of LA , I slept through it....lol
Was in downtown Palo Alto in a two story brick building when the Coalinga quake hit and I jumped over the railing and was down the stairs in 15 seconds flat, That was scary....felt that the whole thing was coming down, moved out that week. No more brick buildings for me. There used to be some in Anchorage but the Good Friday quake took them all down, cant build with brick there anymore.

OK you ready for a mind tickler.....

Name the TWO states that are the farthest north , farthest east, farthest south, and farthest west

The answer will be in the format .......XXXX is farthest XXXX and.....

And we are talking about longitude and latitude

I will bet that nobody gets this one.....A real mind tickler

There is a valid answer......these are states of the united states....territories do not count

Only two states.....four directions

Ready, set, best guesses...

I had to look up the south though so I won't spoil it for anyone who's still playing along.

While I agree that mixing lead batteries of different ages in series is more problematic, there are issues with parallel too. The older batteries having a higher resistance will not work as hard. The new batteries will make up the difference. After the sun goes down all batteries will attempt to equalize themselves. The old batteries are not capable of reaching as high a charge as the new batteries but the new batteries will try to get them there. Therefore all of the batteries wind up in a lower state of charge

Sorry to be quoting from the first page, but the thread seemed to go off topic quite a while ago.

I am in the camp that if running parallel, there is little to no degradation when mixing different age batteries (if they are will maintained). I have been doing it for over 10 years. I have a mix of batteries that have up to a 4 year spread. If one becomes problematic (rare), I will just pop in a new one and carry on.

Unless you have a battery that will just not take a charge, I have found that they all "equalize" fairly well. If there is any shortening of life, it is insignificant as compared to the cost replacing all of the batteries just to have them all the same age as some promote.

Just my "real world" $.02

Alaska is the farthest North, east, and west.

Because it crosses the prime meridian or whatever its called
You are exactly correct, few people know that Alaska crosses the prime meridan and extends to 172 degrees east

Ive been out there servicing a automated weather station.....its a barren place but it is Alaska.

Little Domede (US) is farther east than Big Domede (Russia)....you need to go past russia to get to Alaska

Fascinating. Can you tell us more about your batteries, type, configuration, how it is used and so on?
