For those with solar and alternator charging for your off grid system, how useful have you found alternator charging? How often do you use alternator charging?

I am seriously considering building my 48V DIY battery in a chest freezer to maintain cell temperatures around 10 C to keep the batteries at an optimal temperature. I would be in an environment which may get down to -10C at night for multiple months of the year and may get above 40 C a few days...
