I've seen the same from boat wiring from the 90's and early 2000's. Most of the new terminals that I see are tinned, and closed at the end. So you crimp and then use a shrink tube with a good adhesive. This helps a lot.
Looking at https://www.gobelpower.com/battery_cell_database_ap14.html What is it about the design that allows them to advertise a high Pulse Discharge Current rate compared to others that are a low as 1 C? I'm confused!
Trying to figure out how to organize (2x12) two rows of 12 for 24 total cells to provide 24 volts.
I'm thinking that I can do 3P8S but don't know how to arrange them so that the bus bars are more of less of equal length.
I'm working with some constraints. You can see from the picture that...
This is a lot of information. I will be reading this several times to fully digest. I believe that others in my situation will find this info useful as well. Thanks for taking the time!
I would like to come back with some clarifying questions, one or two at a time. Just let me know when I've...
I checked my configuration by re-drawing the battery connections this way. To my eye, it properly shows a 3p8s configuration. Does anyone know where to get heavy duty tinned-buss bars that can carry 300+ amps? Going with the Fortune 100ah batteries that are rated for 2C continuous gives me a...
Hello all,
The Fortune 100Ah 3.2V 6C battery cell has been receiving good recommendations around the internet including on the Will Prowse DIY Solar Power YouTube channel. Checking the specs on the website www.electriccarpartscompany.com website lists some of the specs as "2C (6C for 10...
A bit of a typo in my earlier post. Here are the specs. The cells have a Max Pulse Discharge Current of 500A (<5 sec). Assuming that 96 cells properly arranged will support this usage including the momentary inrush current to start up the bow thruster motor.
Thanks again for taking the time to...
I purchased the larger NEEY 15A active balancer but have been unable to find a full set of instructions on how to use it.
I am hoping that someone has already used it, been through the learning curve and is willing to share the steps they used and what they learned.
The battery consists of...
I must have hit send twice and the slowness of the Internet on the United flight caused me to send the message twice. (can't wait for Starlink!)
Is there a way to fully delete a message?
I was looking on the OverKillSolar web site at their LFP cells here.
Dimensions: Height 11.5″, Width 5.25″,
Thickness 1.5″
Weight: 5.85lb per cell
They look like the same ones sold on the ElectricCarPartsCompany website - click here . They have the construction style with the plastic frames...
I bought these from batteryhookup.com. As you can see, the little plastic nipple is bent over on the righthand side.
Question:
1. Is this damage or is it ok to use?
2. What is this nipple used for?
I ended up buying these (before I had your recommendation). I've used it a few times now and the cuts are clean and straight. I will see if this remains true over time... Thanks for all of the advice! This is great information!
I am still working to make sense about all of this.
This is from the Victron website.
Lynx Shunt VE.Can - A positive busbar with a space for a main system fuse and a negative busbar with a shunt for battery
monitoring. It has VE.Can communication for monitoring and setup with a GX device...
Sorry everyone. It looks like my post was redundant and late to the party. I had set up my reply and forgot to hit send. Only after hitting send did I learn about everyone else's posts. ughh...
Good advice. This is my plan.
Can you elaborate a bit on this?
I was leaning towards 316 or 304 stainless steel. I have not looked into hard anodizing, but will do so now. Any thoughts on powder coating aluminum or steel?
The Fortune LFP cells have a plastic spacer that creates an air gap...
I do not disagree. This application is for my boat. I'm working with an ABYC certified installer that happens to be an electrical engineer. The rub is that I need to use UL components and use an ABYC certified technician for insurance reasons. He happens to have used this set up on another boat...
I get that the total throughput can not exceed 1,000 amps, which may be a combination of, for example two 500 amp connections going into the lynx power in. Both sources = 500 amp each x 2 to give 1,000amps. But if the max fuse that one can find is 800 amp, per advice from Victron, then how is...
I found this today from the Blue Sea web site:
”Corroded connections are the main cause of high resistance connections that cause equipment to quit working or to work poorly. Frequently high resistance connections are the result of corrosion on the surface of unplated brass and copper...
In my sailboat, the 20hp electric bow thruster motor is driven by the house bank. It runs at 700 amp for a few seconds at a time. There is also a start up inrush current that I need to factor into my design. There may also be the 90A windlass running and other loads.
But my point is that the...
I watched the video several times. I think at the ~30min mark, he meant to say set the LiFePO4 max voltage and NOT nominal voltage. So instead of setting the max voltage to 12.4 which is what he programmed in the monitor, he should have set it to 3.65x4=14.6V. Does anyone else see it this way?
Any recommendations for standardizing on a single type of connector? I found this on Amazon. Because I am on a boat, I want to find a connector type that supports 22-10 gauge, is reasonably weather tight, smallish in size and can used in a variety of electrical projects and electrical upgrades...
I'm speaking with one U.S.-based reseller that speaks very highly of the Fortune 100 cells for many of the same reasons that Will Prowse likes them. They sell a ton of them and have them in stock. I'm also chatting with another U.S.-based reseller that speaks very highly of the CALB 180 cells...
Hello All,
As I am working through and designing my system and am trying to find any information on the use of separate charge and load busses. I am not finding and discussions on the forum, but admit that I may searching on the wrong words. Any help is appreciated.
With my 12 volt 8D AGM batteries 2S2P, I have a theoretical 510 ah capacity, with 50% or 255 ah usable. My goal >1,000 ah. Which is why I'm chasing the LFP/LTO solutions with its storage capabilities and quick ability to charge via the generator, engine driven dedicated Balmar alternator, and...
I get this. I am focused on the lynx shunt not supporting more than an 800amp fuse. That to me is the bottleneck. Won't the fuse blow when you exceed the current rating of the fuse, in this case using the Victron fuse of 325 amps, or a Littelfuse @800amp.
Yes, I understand. I am referring to...
Very impressive! Will you please describe your hardware set up in this picture?
I'm looking at a similar set up and am interested in all of the bits you chose and why.
- Which bus bar are you using?
- TE Kilovac contactors. (new or used?)
- are you happy with the REC BMS with the slave units...
What are some examples of BMS with common ports? What are some examples of BMS with separate ports? I'm trying to learn as much as possible. For example, the Lithionics company shows designs done both ways. But I do not understand the pros and cons of separating the busses for my marine install...
Is there a preferred process for specifying higher rated bus bars? I think I recall a video where Will Prowse double stacked bus bars to provide greater current capacity. Is this the preferred method, or should I make custom bus bars from copper stock? If yes, do I need to have the copper nickel...
Can I assume that "THIS PDF" refers to the link at the end of the paragraph and NOT an embedded link that is accessed by clicking on the "THIS PDF" phrase. (Sorry for being so literal)
My engineer colleague that is guiding me through my build has suggested three BMS that he has significant experience with that he believes would be a good choice for my marine build.
(1) Ewert (Orion) (could not find any information on UL qualifications), and (2) Nuvation (UL Recognized) both...
My engineer colleague that is guiding me through my build has suggested three BMS that he has significant experience with that he believes would be a good choice for my marine build. (He is the founder of a company that has built nearly 100,000 battery systems in the past sixteen years.)
(1)...
I am chatting with a very experienced battery system designer and electrical engineer.
He says that he has built some marine systems that use Super-LTO cells from Toshiba that can discharge up to 100C used to start diesel engines. I've enclosed picture of the last generation Super-LTO cell...
Hello All,
Due to the access to the battery box in my sailboat, I am working through plans to build 4 battery packs. Each pack will be configured for 24 volts and consist of 24 Fortune cells. 4 batt packs x 24 cells/pack = 96 cells. The attached diagram shows my thinking on how to wire each...
This is what I ended up buying. I can use these on my boat, my plane, in the hangar workshop and in my home workshop. I occasionally use gold-plated when connecting to sensitive avionics equipment. In the past, I've used Molex connectors with gold plated pins when passing signals. These...
@Steve_S, you wrote, "Each parallel set of cells is viewed by a BMS as ONE unit. The BMS Sense/Balance wire will go Mid Busbar on the (+) side" which is consistent with other posts and documentation that indicates putting the balance wire at the mid-point of the bus bar for batteries in...
I will take another look at the 280/302Ah EVE batteries. Do you have a link to a reliable source of grade A EVE batteries and the specs? I've watched a number of YouTube videos that are saying that they received Grade B EVE batteries instead of the A grade versions they ordered.
I'm still doing...
I am looking for an all-around connector kits that are waterproof (automotive?), and come in a kit that has anywhere from 1-pin up to 6-pins. I've always used molex connectors in other projects in aviation, but am looking for more advanced, modern technology.
I thought that I would ask this...
Looking at BattleBorn (https://battlebornbatteries.com/shop/12v-lifepo4-deep-cycle-battery/), Victron (https://www.victronenergy.com/batteries/lithium-battery-12-8v), and MasterVolt (https://www.mastervolt.com/products/li-ion/mli-ultra-24-5500/) to replace 24v 1000 AH AGM battery bank.
Plan to...
If I double up the bus bars (use two between each terminal) will that provide 300A of current carrying capability? I'm also pricing tinned copper flat stock to use instead of the supplied bus bars.
Hello All,
- I am swimming in the amount of information available on this forum that I've been reading for the past few weeks.
- I have some gaps in my thinking that I need to close.
- I am planning a 96 cell installation in my sailboat organized into 4 battery packs of 24 Fortune 100ah cells 2C...
Ah, got it. Sometimes, I am too literal.
Yes, I need to power a box thruster that is powered by the house bank. It is a bit of a beast. It's a 20hp electric motor powering a 14 kw hydraulic bow thruster. The motor draws 650-700 amps when running. The use of the bow thruster is normally limited...
I've sent them an email asking for a response. Because I am new at this, I'm not sure what information is known to those with more experience and that which is truly a good question.
As I am thinking about your reply, (and by the way thanks for replying) I do have a question.
As I understand it, I will need to have a charge source on the battery while using the NEEY balancer in the same way that I am using a bench power supply set for 27.7V and 1.1amps, which is the most...
I've looked at the REC website and can't figure out which of their products to specify. I had an initial reach out from Current-Connected but after asking me for some clarifications they have gone dark on me.
Looks pretty nice! I plan to move back and forth from my shop in my hangar which is 120/240 VAC 60 Hz and the boat which is 240 VAC 50 Hz/24 volts. I now need to find a small bench top power supply that easily switches voltages and Freq. or just buy two.
Nice specs!
I've seen a number of posts for cheap bench power supplies, but have not found any recommendations for high quality, high output, professional or semi-professional bench power supplies. I'm willing to make the investment in quality gear.
Thoughts?
I've ordered Ancor cable and Selterm lugs. Curious to know what you use to cut the cable, strip the insulation, and crimp the lugs. Also are the bolts and nuts special as well?
@GnrlPatton - how is your system working now?
Also, does your logs on the REC-BMS should a time/date stamp? I have two REC-BMS systems on my boat. One has the correct time and the other only shows the sample number. I have not found where to set or get the time-stamp for the REC logging.
Hello All,
I use Starlink on my boat. It works great for my usage pattern. When away from the boat, I can access my Victron Energy devices, no problem using their VRM.
But I am looking for a way to access my REC BMS devices that are using the REC WiFi module.
I'm told that this is not a...
