I have basically zero experience with solar electric, but I have some family land where I'd like to build an off-grid cabin, so I'm wanting to learn about options for solar power. I think I'm at least as interested in non-electric options for off-grid living (like hand pumping water, cooking with a wood stove, solar ovens, etc.), but I'd eventually really like to be able to have a freezer and maybe do some limited other things with solar electric. In the meantime I'd like to find some inexpensive beginner projects to experiment with and learn.
Current or Future Solar Power System
I still have a lot to learn, but my best guess as to what would work well for me is a 12 or 24 volt DC system with very minimal battery back-up. There's a place in Virginia I've read about called Living Energy Farm that refers to their system as "daylight drive," which I think means that part of their system runs more or less straight off the sun with little or no battery dependence.
