Here is what I did to make my connection, easy drilled a hole in the the metal plate that is connecting the battery post and used a bolt. See image attached. Works very well for me.

Its very simple electronics. The battery is acting as the load for the charge controller. If you remove it, the voltage will rise. Still, I dont think that should have caused the controller to fail. Unfortunately, he does not say if inverter was connected or not.

A load is actually on it as it will pass through the inverter and power the load, but the charge circuit will not switch on. Will always stay in bypass mode.
