Totally agree. People dont understand/take the efficiency rating out of context. A 400w panel will always be a 400w panel, no mater what its efficiency rating is, they are all rated under the same set of conditions, amount of light, temperature, etc. They are all rated under the...
  • Post in thread: Getting frustrated with [lack of] NC state and utility "green energy" encouragement

As a professional Electrician(not Lineman) and Solar Installer/enthusiast, I also dont understand what is wrong with his statement, and would like to hear your education. What is dangerous? Any inverter that connects to the grid must meet UL listings, as specified by the NEC. This means that...
  • Post in thread: Forgot to tighten lug

You can turn them on with the door open. Most larger disconnects have a catch inside that wont let you OPEN the door with the switch on. But many of them have a little "knob" on the side that allows you to "lift" the safety latch and open the door, without turning the switch off. SqD switches...
  • Post in thread: 23% and higher solar panels for sale

As far as I know/understand, the number/layout of busbars doesnt have any effect on efficiency during shading. The layout of the panel, like full cell vs split cell, blocking diodes, etc, would have much more impact on shading, especially partial shading.
  • Post in thread: Schneider Enhanced Grid Support Odd Behavior

I havent installed a Schneider system in 2-3 years, and I have never messed with a Schneider system with a BCS, only XW and MPPTs, also have never used BMS comms or SOC control, always program as custom battery and use voltage control for everything. Mostly LFP batteries, one or two older...
  • Post in thread: Schneider System Help

Dont know if you got this figured out at all. But your Export Sell Power Block times look like they could be a problem. Also, on your MPPT settings, turn max charge rate up to 100%, no reason at all to have it at 65%, unless your wiring cant handle 80A or something. You are already under...
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark 15K Setting Help Please

Good to hear. What tripped in the inverter, one of the breakers?
  • Post in thread: Getting frustrated with [lack of] NC state and utility "green energy" encouragement

Yes, nothing in this world is 100% foolproof. But like I said, if a grid tied system were to malfunction, and backfeed the grid, in a grid down situation, the likelihood off it actually backfeeding beyond your local transformer is pretty slim, if the outage is beyond your local (to your house)...
  • Post in thread: Scored Schneider Context XW Pro 6848

I was going to say this also. My XW in my personal system is more efficient then a lot of AIOs I have installed. Sol-Arks seem to consume quite a lot of power, but they pull it from the AC side vs the DC side, when grid tied.
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark 15K Setting Help Please

Your biggest problem is you need some kind of buss bar to connect each of those 10 batteries to some large cables to the inverters. Right now you have the one large cable from the inverters, then every battery after the first one is daisy chained with a little #6 cable, which is good for about...
  • Post in thread: Is unused PV energy completly safe?

Im not sure about the EG4 18K, but the 6000K is basically an offgrid inverter and will never push any power back to the grid. I have setup a couple 6000Ks and am not impressed with them. One is in an offgrid cabin, and the inverter just randomly shuts down and restarts whenever it feels like...
  • Post in thread: [SOLD] Schneider XW 6048 & XW+ 6848 - North Carolina

At the current price new XW Pros are going for, I think it was a wise move to ditch the old ones and get 3 new Pros. Im tempted to buy a new XW Pro just to sit on my shelf as a spare.
  • Post in thread: Grounding - Grid Bypass with Subpanel

You literally cut the feed between the main panel and sub panel, insert the inverter, done. Couldnt be more simple. The neutral and grounds are both common in the inverter, so they both land there, and pass thru. The inverter only switches the hot wires.
  • Post in thread: Sol-Ark 15K Setting Help Please

Settings look ok from what I can see. I would turn off the time of use crap until you get the rest of it figured out. Kinda a long shot, but I have seen this behavior when someone forgets to turn the inverter on, blue ring side button, for some reason the inverter will act and look like its...
  • Post in thread: Solar setup need help

Yes, once you get into a nice MPPT charge controller, you ignore the 12v and 24v stuff, thats for tiny systems where you are hooking a panel directly to the battery, or using a cheap PWM charge controller. With a good MPPT controller you just look at its specs, look at your battery/system...
  • Post in thread: Newbie Needs Help With Design

I would check with some local installers or talk with the utility company to see what the local inspectors/utility is actually requiring. Where I live, we can just put a disconnect at your meter that is 350' away, but not have to physically bring the solar feed all the way there, it could just...
  • Post in thread: San Tan Solar used panels.

How do you have these panels wired? It almost sounds like some of them have been fried, maybe the diodes have gone bad.
  • Post in thread: Charge / discharge rating for multiple 48V server rack batteries

You could double your main battery cables to the inverter, assuming you are able to land them in the inverter. Also, you should move either the positive or negative cable to the other battery, connecting the main cables to "opposite" corners of the battery bank, this causes the current to flow...
  • Post in thread: Residential solution - help needed

If the amp limit of each MPPT input is 20A, then no, you could not parallel 2 strings of that particular panel together, they could potentially produce 27A or more. Im assuming that by SV and NV you mean south/north west? Obviously your south east and west roofs would give better production...
  • Post in thread: Bench test Schneider XW-Pro options?

If I understand, you bought it as a spare, as in you already have a functioning system (I have considered doing the same thing, one to put on the shelf!!). Why not just hook it up to the 48v battery bank Im assuming you already have? Iv powered up some 24v SW inverters off an adjustable bench...
  • Post in thread: Schneider XW Pro

Does it trip the inverter out? How big/what is your battery bank? Check ALL of your connections, I know this gets beaten to death, but ONE lose connection anywhere in the system can cause all kinds of weird problems that are very hard to figure out. It sounds like something on the DC side...
  • Post in thread: dead battery bank start up, off grid, Schneider

What this guy said... Set the Low Battery Cut Out LBCO on your inverter high enough to keep a "reserve" in the battery bank that the system stays "alive" until solar or some other source can get the batteries back above Low Battery Cut In (battery voltage at wich inverter begins powering loads...
  • Post in thread: Comparing battery storage vs grid storage in terms of round trip efficiency

I dont quite understand the setup with the power company. It sounds like they "cash you out" every month, for the excess power you deliver to them. But do you get to trade power back and forth with them during that month, for example, for todays 24h period, you consumed 20kwh or power, but...
  • Post in thread: DC/AC Ratio

This is simply a ratio of how much PV an inverter or MPPT charger can handle vs. its output rating. This applies to plain grid tie inverters, AIOs, MPPT chargers. Basically anything that has a PV input and some kind of output, be it DC to a battery bank, or AC to the grid or loads. Any PV...
  • Post in thread: [SOLD] Schneider XW 6048 & XW+ 6848 - North Carolina

I like mine! They have their quirks, and buying into the whole ecosystem is a little expensive, but they are built like TANKS! And so much more fun to play with and tweak then a boring AIO!!
  • Post in thread: Schneider XW Pro strange split mode

Ive been trying to help a guy with a similar problem with 2 XWs but I just dont have the experience with multi inverter setups. This is a system/package the guy bought online and had his local electrician install, and it seemed ok for a while but never quite right, then his problems got worse...
  • Post in thread: Schneider XW Pro randomly starts charging

If I follow... Enabling load shave keeps the inverters from charging batteries during the time settings load shave is active? So if the grid is dropped and qualified, it will not automatically start a charge cycle, because it is in load shave. But load shave also stops it from starting a...

    I see, nice battery cabinet!
  • Post in thread: Is my solar production throttled?

HAHA, love how it took to post #10 for someone to finally point out the 80A charge controller!!! I kept waiting for it! I was about to lose it! The choppiness on that battery graph cannot be healthy. Lots of charge and discharge happening to that poor battery. You should be able to dial...
  • Post in thread: Off grid setup using hybrid AIO

Use a hybrid as you mentioned, not an off grid, it will more seamlessly work between the main panel and sub panel. What are your loads in the sub panel? Any big appliances? Dryer, A/C, range, welder, EV charger? Most hybrids come with 60A passthru and transfer switch built in, so no need to...
  • Post in thread: Help Calculating Ideal Charge Current Setting on Hybrid Inverters for Batteries

First off, that is a very nice setup, size wise, good ratio of PV, battery, and inverter. Most people cheap out and undersize their battery compared to the rest of the system, yours is not at all. I have worked with some very similar inverters, I believe they were rated at 8kw thou, they were...
