I think to some, seeing a post with that many acronyms they just gloss over it and look for the TL;DR. Here's the short version of Will's post:
Summary: LiFePO4 Battery Degradation in Solar Applications
LiFePO4 battery lifespan in solar systems is primarily affected by **calendar aging**, not...
I have always been jealous of some of y'alls setups. Some are posting things like 100kWh generated in a single day. I thought that was nuts. I'd look at my small system and think why on earth can't I generate that much.
Example: Right now I have about 2800 W in panels. even in the best of...
Wait so has to be a different fuel? Example : you have electricity but has to also have wood burning fireplace? I was doing a house remodel and inspector said I had to have a heater. This is in Los Angeles where it once snowed 100 years ago but hasn’t since. We had removed the old gas furnace...
As I look back at some of the posts in this thread, a statement my grandpa once told me comes to mind. He'd say: "Never wrestle with a pig, because you both get dirty, but the pig likes it".
House is 88 years old. Was added on to and partially rewired in late 1950s we believe. Today I bravely killed the breakers one at a time, killed the subpanel breaker, killed the main breaker, removed the cover of my 70 year old Cutler-Hammer panel, measured for any juice, shifted some breaker...
I think the fact that no one has said here is how you build a DIY battery. You will need these 3-4 tools. Here's links to those tools. You will need a place to store them. here is a link to an enclosure. You will need to buy these cells. here's the link to buy these in USA. You need to buy a...
Jeez the FOMO on this thread is huge. Here I am with just one chinese battery and y'all out there with these 100kWh+ size packs.
Going to build my own pack now. Thanks everyone.
Spoke with the managing partner at a famous law firm that only handles class-action cases. They are a large international firm, and the deal in much bigger cases than 2-5 people, but asked me to share more information if the scope/impact changes.
Cases they normally handle are when insurance...
Damn everyone bring it down a notch jeez. Build each other up not tear each other down. I don't know any of you, but if you wouldn't say that to someone's face, why post it here? Very aggressive y'all. <virtual hug>
It showed up 24 hours late but did arrive. Plugged it right in and started working at once. It’s as if usb and VE.direct were meant to work together. The MPPT is showing up again in Cerbo GX.
Just so I’m clear…in order for anything to show up in Cerbo GX there must be a physical connection. It...
<Grabs flashlight and power tools to work in dark tonight; gets served noise complaint by cops>
But officer, I just wanted a few more months of solar production!
This is the proof I was seeking buried in this thread that Sol-Ark cannot unbrick these devices, even though Deye said if in North America to call Sol-Ark.
Perhaps the point of Sam being an agitator here is to enrage people enough to post all the stories of how great customer service or products are from the vendors in question. Truly and evil plan, but seems to be working.
Amy at Docan has been very friendly in my interactions. I have not bought...
I would be happy to arrange a call with my uncle for you @Will Prowse - he worked at NASA JPL on all of the mars rovers. He retired about 3 years ago. He's in his 70s and still lives in Pasadena. In retirement, he is helping a friend with a solar concentrator. We talked about solar power, my...
the holes on the bus bar are oblong so that as cells expand and contract it doesn't rip the bolts out of the tops of the cells. Accounts for swollen cells when assembling too
Pretty sure that was done a while back. It has been very good. The bummer is it doesn't display as much cool stuff. Love to see voltage and amps in VRM.
Most expensive mistake is trying to do things cheaply vs. safely, aka the right way. Yes, you can buy a battery from auto parts stores and throw on a harbor freight inverter with the aluminum wires they provide and throw on a PWV solar charge controller. You can do everything without fuses or...
Very good eyes, gentlemen. But the temp is rising to 93 degrees right now - alarm set at 120. recommended is under 122 for charge, 140 for discharge, and at 167 it will cut off the BMS.
so you are in support of putting the new class T I have close to the battery, before the kill switch, and before the bus bar, as mentioned above?
If yes, that is 2 votes, and I'll do that change in the morning. In addition to every other change.
I was seriously considering the 460Ah 12V battery - a few of them - for another project, but after will's video and the 10 pages of issues here particularly with victron comms, I'm out.
Many of us have disassembled our electrical systems a few times. More technical work than physical labor, but doing this now before panels up? Very smart IMHO - one bad storm is all it takes. Or, get your welder guy out and pop a bead around the pipe once the array is built before the panels go...
if it is a 5 digit code, can we have a robot start at 00000, then 00001, then 00002 until it is unbricked, share that code with others, and see if it is the same unlock code for all of them?
Same. I had a Chinese one before, and the plastic that held the fuse in place did melt. It is what kept it waterproof. After the plastic got hot, then I noticed the wire going to and from the fuse was getting exceptionally hot as well. Replaced the fuse holder and fuse with Blue Sea, and no...
My smartshunt 500 amp does not have a connection for the temp sensor.
I think they put those connections on the battery monitor - the round display thing that I do not have.
I don't think there is a temp sensor on the MPPT either.
OH looks like I am wrong - the aux port - usually used for a...
I like wills "You were the chosen one!" statement in the video. Wasn't lost on me.
Do any of those other ones (maybe vatrer) have victron comms, or is that not important to you? It is to me because I do want to see cell voltages from VRM from remote location.
okay @timselectric @sirtra @Backyard @Quattrohead @DPC and others...first of all, thanks for your advice and help on this and other threads. I am most appreciative.
I connected a receptacle to the 3 wires inside the poolside junction box where the LED pool light normally connects. I have a test...
I guess is that as an influencer who cares about your commissions you would’ve heard about this honey platform or scam. Has someone who just clicks your link to buy things, I have never heard of honey before. I didn’t even know it was around for years. I guess you have to spend a lot of time...
Watch 3 Body Problem on Netflix. I think this audience will enjoy that. Just finished the 8 part series. Excited it’s getting renewed for a 2nd season. You are bugs.
Just found this. This guy had his inverter (and batteries) stolen and posted to FB. Read the comments.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/884795926224210/posts/1119822362721564/
I'll summarize: A rep from Deye says to call in and report the S/N of the equipment he got stolen, and then Deye will...
So that I understand here...is the messaging on the Deye inverters to enter a 5 digit code, and in order to acquire one, they need to call Sol-Ark in the USA?
Does Sol-Ark have a 5 digit code they are offering people for a fee, or are they offering to sell people an entirely new sol-ark branded...
Okay just watched 3 videos from Mike Holt about pools:
How to verify that metal pool equipment, metal parts, the pool shell, and the perimeter area are connected to service equipment.
What happens if a pool is bonded properly in accordance with the NEC
What happens if an energized part is...
He is the Jim Cramer of electrical code. Or a less funny Zig Ziglar. He talks very fast and drops references to NEC very fast. Thankful for his powerpoint, though. Sounds like your recap was spot on - run the ground with the PV wires over to the disconnect, and so on. Not a separate ground wire...
Thanks.
I was thinking 200 A would be good. The experience I have right now with a battery that is rated for 200 amp, but it seems to overheat when more than 50 A continuous discharge, I wanted to play it safe.
Plus, I already have a 225 amp t class fuse and holder so that’s most of the way...
Worked at a place 8 years ago that used a Russian company. There's a list of services they offer under youtube. You can do packages with 250 views, 1000 views, and upward. They prompt you for the URL you want to boost. They ask you what day you want the boost to start. They then tell the virtual...
Okay I will 'rotate' the positive conductor from the kill switch and battery the other way around. I do not want to bypass the kill switch and go straight to the bus bar.
I will leave the temp sensor at the bus bar for now, as you said.
the t-class fuse holder showed up last night, got installed today. The t-class fuse just showed up, the 200 A is smaller than the 225 A+ holder I got from the links shared earlier. Ugh. Returning the 200 A fuse for a 225 A fuse. In the mean time, leaving my ANL 200 A in position, 10" from...
We have 2 properties that we put cisterns on the roof. Water is delivered by the municipality only twice a month through PVC pipes to our building. When the water pressure goes up on the building inlet, I have a pressure switch that turns on an electric pump to get the water to the roof. They...
Turned on the inverter, pool pump, and pool heater, and went for a 45 minute walk.
Remember this is with the conductors that came with the inverter, not my newly crimped conductor.
When I started this post:
I think the heater is turning on and off, and when it surges the current rises...
It depends on where I suppose. I am seeing terrific return on investment. All depends on timing. I have done a lot of buying and selling - over 30 properties. Best ROI over 300%. Most 200%. Buy, hold for 3-7 years, and sell. Repeat. Got lucky on probably half of the properties, the rest were...
I've got 2 portable power stations and really like them. Power them up from the sun, plug my computer into one for 5+ hours, then swap out the charged one later in the day if at all needed. Wish I could afford a bigger one (not the hand truck option) so I didn't have to swap, but for now, it's...
For some people flashing of lights or flickering is very triggering. Some are very sensitive to this - beyond strong dislike. It causes headaches and migraines and worse. It is like any other one of the senses. Some have a super strong sense of smell as well. For those people, flashing is not...
The DC load is a small SeaFlo 12V pump that sucks water from the pool about 1 foot down, through filter, into pump, and up onto my roof 16' up in the air, circulates the water for 500 feet on the white, flat roof that gets the most sun on our property, then it exits back into the pool 3-8...
Using THHN wire, Blue Sea Systems, and Victron hardware for battery disconnect, bus bars, fuses, shunts, and monitoring so far. Paycheck to paycheck...
System #1 - 12V Chins LiFePO4 200 Ah w/ 3000W Giandel inverter and 2600W BP Solar panels to run pool pump & pool heater.
System #2 - 12V Chins...
It is not that. It was not cheap. It was from a marine supply store.
Previously, I used 2/0 THHN on this setup but it was very hard to move. I had lugs, but they were all 5/16 but I needed 3/8 for some of the connections. I had a bunch of lugs in a box that were these:
Ancor Heavy-Duty Lugs...
Are people in favor of the welded up cell bus bars? Think I'd like studs with removable ones in case a bad cell in the future and I don't have to spot weld anything on the top. Thoughts?
I will go out and take pix soon.
Chins 200 Ah 12v lifepo4 non smart no Bluetooth. 100 amp rating. Likes 60 or less I read somewhere.
Shunt has those small connections. The temp sensor connects there and the other end with the black thing and connector go on the positive battery cable side...
Anyone have design plans with photos for one of those pergula / roman shade outdoor patio covers made of treated wood that also has mounts on top? I have a backyard that I could paint the ground white and put one of these patio covers up with some panels up top in a low-wind area of the property.
Not an expert but it looked like the wires inside did not reach that far into the lug. The lug was open on the terminal side enough to see inside of the crimp. Almost like the wires were inserted 3/4 of the way or one of the two Conductors was longer than the other inside the crimp by 1/4 inch...
Following up it did set itself to 100% SOC after charging up overnight.
I also looked at the battery BMS and it also stated 97% SOC.
So far today drained system down to 0% SOC, and charging on the way back up very well right now. I will see what SOC says tonight, and if any issues, I'll report...
Just to make sure I'm understand correctly.
Perfectly sunny day.
Running no loads on inverter, just idle consumption.
Battery at 5% SOC overnight.
Sun comes up, starts charging at 40 amps within first hour of sun, moving towards 100 A.
200 ah battery, gets full to 100% SOC by 11 AM or noon...
Agreed. That is why the inverter and PV inputs are off right now
Correct. I have a heat gun and will go get it and fact check, but I am touching with my fingertip to the positive battery post, then the main cable from there, and then the temp sensor. The temp sensor is the hottest. Do these go...
Is it common to put internet connectivity in a boot loader, though? I remember the old intel PXE boot option from windows that came out somewhere mid 80s that would allow you to install windows over a network location. That was new, and functionality lived on the network card I believe to...
Oops - corrected. I don't have BMS that I can connect to with Bluetooth to see what it reports. That's what I meant. Thanks. MCSE computer certification? We are getting old my friend.
I've got their two 4 panel racks I haven't assembled yet - trying to be patient, but it's just there waiting to be assembled and have the panels I have standing by put on them.
Same. Also not certain I understand the loads this is being connected to. Must be significant. Those custom Siemens panels aren't cheap.
Never heard of those batteries he had. Looks like maybe 4 rack mount batteries mounted vertically sideways in each cage? Maybe he has a link to the specs...
The inverter and loads are still off. Battery terminal is cold. Going to go find my temp gun and be right back. Here are some screenshots. The temperature sensor is working now, but it is showing you the temperature at the bus bar.
Remember that I have the FM 80 restricted to 20 A output...
I love that new surge station. My hope is that will build a cinder block testing facility in the backyard away from his primary residence and shop. I thought it was cool that he was wearing the aspirator when he was cutting it open as well.
That's very cool will. I started with this book after your medical-related one back when you lived in the RV. It's a great book and I refer to it often. Have it right on my desk.
At this point do we think bad conductor, bad battery, or too much current for 12 V battery? What is strange to me is that the inverter posts are 75 degrees but battery - positive post only - is 120. Maybe this is normal.
You all realize there are 2100+ posts on this thread, right? There is no 'unroll' feature for the thread or TL;DR. You have to view every one of the 85 pages and 25 posts a page to know what is going on. And now it sounds like there is a second thread or more. So I apologize if I cannot keep up...
No he was right - the postivie conductor to the kill switch from the battery was NOT resting on the battery - it was on top of the big lug that comes from the victron temp sensor. I have made the change. Goes battery, big lug to conductor to the kill switch, then big lug provided on the victron...
Old posts - just closing this out. My CHINS 200Ah 12V is not a 'smart' battery with bluetooth bms. Now that I have victron gear to properly measure, I am getting 200Ah consistently. Thanks.
I watched enough videos to know to use insulated gloves, insulated tools, a face shield, and turn my head away. Those arc flash and arc burst videos will haunt my dreams.
Confirmed, yes - goes battery main + battery cable + temp sensor + bolt in that order. No washer. No lock washer. Torqued to specs. Not loose to the wiggle. Temperature seems steady at 93 degrees F right now. Will keep monitoring. Discharge is the same as it was before the change, and charge on...
My uncle is working on a DIY portable solar concentrator. The dish would follow the sun. His prototype was destroyed in the recent fires here in LA. Probably another year before he even can start to think about getting back on that project.
I don't like seeing errors in ebay listings. too many ways for seller to not accept a return already, and if they can't post something right, I doubt it will be supported in the future by seller with the warantee.
most of the stuff I've bought lately is beefy enough to go to 48V I thought. Didn't count on the little fuses only going up to 30V. Or that a 1 AWG cable wouldn't be big enough for a 12V system running 100 A. Or that the fuses I had to protect the battery, the inverter, or the MPPTs were too...
I do not believe they are obligated to inform you of that. It's not like when you are driving down the road and get pulled over by police and then they find out through your driver's license, which is linked to your VIN, that it has been reported stolen.
Merchandise is stolen all the time...
There’s some pretty terrible threads in the chit chat zone. Bigotry, hate, and anti-semitism should have no place on this forum. Some people should probably be banned. Take some of that “free speech” and post it elsewhere. Just sickening.
