Per VRLA battery manual equalization is not needed and it is not recommended. And for the rest that you said - that is some really good info that is much appreciated! I may just do that for start (put them in parallel, do occasional disconnect put some load on it and then reconnect) and later I...
  • Post in thread: automate power on/off of water heater

I have an off grid system and I do not wish to use the energy from the battery banks for big appliances like water heater, I prefer to use the energy from solar array when there is enough of solar energy to run the water heater. Is there is some kind of sensor/meter that can measure solar...
  • Post in thread: Lead acid and LiFePO4 together

so, in scenario that LFP and VRLA batteries are connected in parallel (48V system) if LFP 48V battery pack max operating voltage is 57.6V and VRLA bank max voltage is 56.4V and operating voltage is 54V - how do you safely connect them together? Would that voltage difference be safe for VRLA...
  • Post in thread: automate power on/off of water heater

that (on ebay) is a very interesting product! something like that may be used in my setup. BTW, I was also thinking of using a small solar panel as a "sensor" that in turn would turn relay when a certain power level is reached. I probably would have to use a dummy load on that small solar cell...

I watched your video clip, it is very informative. Thanks for the tip on growatt inverter, I will look into it.
  • Post in thread: Lead acid and LiFePO4 together

wow! that is some awesome documentation of how this works in real life! thank you. I will think about can I apply this to my scenario.
  • Post in thread: Lead acid and LiFePO4 together

I have an off grid system, 4KW solar array with battery bank of 4 x 12V 200A VRLA batteries in series (48V). With 50% discharge that gives me around 4.6 KWAh. There are days when I can produce more than 20KW and I would like to store excess energy in LiFePo4 battery bank for rainy days, I was...
  • Post in thread: automate power on/off of water heater

That is very informative! thanks for this tip! This gives me an idea; When batteries are fully charged or at float charge (in my system that is 54V) a dump load (water heater) can be triggered. I can probably tie a voltage probe to my battery bank so when a certain voltage level has been...
  • Post in thread: Victron 100/15 "load output" maximum?

I have a similar situation, the difference is that I have 2 panels that are facing in wrong direction (North) instead of South, since I am at 44 parallel in Northern hemisphere. Reason for that is that I got those panels is that I can use them as spares for my main solar array, should one or 2...
  • Post in thread: Felicity LiFePO4 Battery and Growatt 5000ES inverter - need some help with configuration

I have very recently upgraded my Off grid solar system battery. For a year and half I was using Growatt 5000ES with 4 x 200 Ah VRLA batteries (48v) and 4KW of panels. It worked fine but I wanted more capacity. So, I decided to upgrade the batteries to Felicity 10.KW LPF battery. After...
  • Post in thread: automate power on/off of water heater

you are correct. I was overthinking it.
  • Post in thread: solar array capacity vs battery capacity - proper sizing

I need some advice and clever ideas from people on this forum that have lot more experience than yours truly; In my off-grid system I have 9 x 540W panels in my primary solar array that is connected to 5KW inverter and 4 x 200Ah VRLA batteries in series (48V system). I am planning to replace...
  • Post in thread: Victron 100/15 "load output" maximum?

Thanks for your feedback. I have came up to same conclusion after looking at victron spec sheet and doing some calculations myself. that scenario applies on on a good solar day with solar panels facing South, but what if they are facing in wrong direction? I think that would produce lot less...

great! thank you for that tip!
  • Post in thread: automate power on/off of water heater

interesting approach. how would you turn the relay on at specific battery voltage?
  • Post in thread: solar array capacity vs battery capacity - proper sizing

You made some good points. My concern is will there be enough solar capacity to charge those large batteries. And yes, if there is no adequate sunshine for a few days the batteries may not adequately recharge, although i can use my main solar array to top them off if needed.
  • Post in thread: solar array capacity vs battery capacity - proper sizing

I would not use more than 25% capacity weekly, most likely it would be around 15% weekly. I guess i will need to do some experimenting and figure out the charging profiles that actually work.
  • Post in thread: Growatt SPF 5000Es and felicity solar 5kw battery.

Do yourself a favor and download the data sheet and user manual and ideally you would also download instructions covering connectivity of your specific inverter to your battery. It is all there. Read it and understand it. I did and the only thing that helped me when I ran into trouble ("LI"...
  • Post in thread: solar array capacity vs battery capacity - proper sizing

thanks for your insights I understand perfectly what you said on lithium batteries. as far as for batteries - they do equalize via the bank balancer, if I reconfigure and place them in 2s 2p configuration they will also be connected to a balancer I am at 44 degrees latitude and there are lots...
  • Post in thread: Lead acid and LiFePO4 together

thank you for your feedback! Yes, it does makes sense what you said about LFP being used as the primary battery bank. I guess then that I would need to figure out how not to overcharge the VRLA batteries as LFP has a higher voltage state. Am i on right track here?
