I don't know what category this fits in so the Mods can feel free to move it.
I Caught this Video from AverageJoe on the new Rhino and Razor Battery by Bigbattery.com
They claim it's the only LIfePO4 battery that can be punctured and still operate normally.
He compares it to some LG Chem cells. If you wanna see how bad it can get the you can skip to the 10:40 Mark.

Saw this and absolutely reinforced my decision to never work with Lion cells. i am not even confident enough to build from individual LifePO4 cells.

I'm not going to lie... I have a (irrational) uneasy-ness about lifepo4 myself.. I know I shouldn't.

Actually, I think it's not that LiFePO4 won't burn. I believe @HighTechLab had a video where he punctured an LiFePO4 cell and there was a fire. However, I think was the electrolyte burning.

The difference from other Li-ion chemistries is that most of them are subject to thermal runaway, where the cell can - without puncturing - essentially blow up.

It isn’t the cells so much as it is my capacity for being clumsy. Too much raw amperage for me to work with. I will stick to running home circuits to a new panel, and configuring the solar and inverter runs. Give me a finished battery or 4 and I am okay

While those cells do look look very interesting .... they also are showing a VERY wide temperature range for charging (-20°C (-4°F) / 65°C (149°F) .... They are very expensive and I would never buy from that company.

It will be interesting to see if any of the trusted Alibaba providers have these cells available .... who is the manufacturer?

But don't think that a commercially assembled battery will be better. You at least have to look under the hood. In some cases, we would do much better DIY than those assemblies.
The big names have had packs catch fire too. Part of the problem can be probability of certain defects in cells. The product can be engineered to withstand a cell failure (Tesla cars), but most aren't.
I would want to locate a lithium pack where it could burn without spreading to the house.
For lead-acid, where outgassing can vent.

Yeah I had a run in with them a few years back with "luckily" some cheap batteries because the Warranty was not honored.

Those actually look a LOT like BYD Blade Cells and the no-burn tech is something they do for the EV's. How are they getting them is a mystery as BYD can't make enough to supply it's current deliveries. The grey market in China can get them BUT... don't even want to think of that....

LFP can catch fire but it is never explosive like NMC NCA etc...

That last part with the NMC Pouch Cells quite literally Exploding like that... YUMPIN YIMMINIES !
Those wouldn't be the same as Nissan Leafs LiPoly's ?

Did a quick look on Alibaba and there are some vendors selling the BYD blade cells second hand ..... That is probably the most likely source.

I think Tesla uses hundreds (or thousands) of those cylindrical cells shown in the beginning of that video. I guess that's why once in a while you see on the news of Teslas going up in smoke and firefighters can't even put it out as it burns for hours and hours.

Here is one of many videos of Tesla cars on fire.

Can you put up a link, thanks.

Yes it was.

Until I see an official specification sheet from BYD on the cells in these batteries, I'm not going to get too excited about the temperature claims. There's just too much bad information out there.

Various Alibaba merchants claim the charge temperature is from 0 to 45°C or from -10 to 50°C and a cycle life of 3000, 4000, or 5000 charge/discharge cycles, take your pick. Interestingly, none of the Alibaba merchants I found claimed a charge temperature as low as -20°C. And without the spec sheet, it is impossible to say what charging rates are allowed a low temperatures.

On the positive side, it is impressive that the battery is so stable when damaged. BYD must be doing something different. I tried to look on the BYD website for more information, but couldn't connect for some reason.

I think I saw a video that claimed 8000 cycles?? Lol. But the cells I just bought are rated 6000, so I probably won't NEED more for a while. But, want? Yes. The form factor is kind of a trip, though, and terminals on each end? Awkward for my tiny home. But I could literally tuck them inside the walls in my old Dodge van! So tidy.

Even at 6000 Cycles that would carry you until the year 2038. By then Elon Musk will either have people on Mars or be at a food shelter looking for handouts. :ROFLMAO: .
