Batteries vs Inverter size

I read a review which said the 1200w Giandel won’t go past 1220w, even for a 30 second surge - or something like that. Does that match your experience?

High freqency inverters like the Giandel have a surge rating of ~20 milli-seconds which is ~1 cycle of ac power.

For 30 second surge ratings look at low frequency inverters like this one.
"CONTINUOUS OUTPUT POWER AND POWER FACTOR (PF)1200 Watt at PF = 0.95"
POWER BOOST FOR 30 SEC 150% (1800W at PF = 0.95)"

Personally I’ve given up worrying about surge… it has a soft-start/ramp-up feature that will run the ~900W shopvac (except in bright sun; more on that below) and the fridge hits 850W+ on start and drops to 60- or 80W. 780W coffeemaker is a resistance load and no surge there. For fun I tried a 700W heater fan for a half hour, again no probs.

I bought it to run what I’m running with the idea that I could use a vacuum. I can.

And it’s been 100% satisfactory for about four years.

The only issue I’ve had is not really an inverter issue. If batteries are say 14.4V and the sun is out and I turn on the vacuum- the charge controller puts out 16-18V or more for a second or two or more until it modulates the voltage and amps again. This shuts the inverter down with its high voltage protection circuit. If batteries are 12.8V or it’s not full sun this doesn’t happen. Sure freaked me out the first time! Then I thought it through and figured it out.

OK. Sounds like the Giandel 1200 is really good enough for all I want to do. Thanks.

If you get a Panasonic inverter series microwave you can use a lower power setting and the unit will draw lower power instead of cycling the Magnetron. I believe they go down to 500-700 watts on level 4 or 5 before the Magnetron is cycled.

Sorry, but what is a Megatron? What is a “inverter series microwave”? Is it a 12v microwave which works without an inverter?

1. Magnetrons

The microwave’s magnetron consists of a vacuum-like tube and a strong magnet and sits on the same side as the control panel.

Like a human brain sends messages to the body, magnetrons produce microwaves that travel through the waveguide and bounce from the oven’s metal interior to the water molecules in the food.

The tiny waves cause the water molecules to vibrate. The friction of the vibrating molecules produces heat, thereby cooking the food. --

OK - so the Magnetron is the component which generates the microwaves. Thanks!
What about the “inverter series microwave”? What is that?

Wow! Even assuming some of that may be marketing hype, so much of it rings true that it looks like a Panasonic microwave removes the need for induction cooking. Thanks!

How?
Induction cooking cooks food by heating the cooking vessel.
A microwave heats the food directly.

It is depend on what you want to cook.
Microwave oven with built-in convection oven has added heater and fan to circulate the heat from the heating element for convection function.

I've heard of people installing a convection microwave in their RV. I've looked at them, they take up more room, more weight. I wondered how many watts it pulls too and whether a solar system on an RV would handle it well without shore power.

I was told I can't make Fries in the microwave.. But I still need the induction to do hamburgers.
