Looking at making a 12v 460ah pack from 8 230ah cells. Any problems or pitfalls in doing that?

One BMS or Two? What loads are you planning to source?

I’m doing the exact same set up with one BMS as my loads are very very minimal for now and eventually this bank will be converted to 24v and a sister battery added.

You will have a far better battery if you match the cell pairs to be as equal as possible. This means strongest cell paired with weakest, second strongest paired with second weakest.

Are you planning on capacity testing? (I never have done it with a capacity tester)

I top balanced in parallel, then built 2 4S batteries and put them thru a few charge and discharge cycles to get an idea which were strong and weak.
I then moved the 4 weakest (some guesswork with little data) to one 4S battery and the strongest to a second 4S battery.

I ran a few charge cycles, continuing to take notes on my labelled cells. From this I ranked strongest to weakest and built my pairs.

Perfect? No but 2 years of problem free use.

Hopefully this was clear. First step is to label your cells and take notes!

Thanks for the info! I have a capacity tester but not sure if I have the time to test all of them separately. I will for sure top balance!

This sounds to me like you'll lose the capacity of the strongest cells to the weakest. or am i confused? I think if his cells differed that much he'd be better off building 2x 12v batteries in a 4s2p config. As for serial operation, he'd be best off matching by internal resistance, no?

Edit: i see later in your post you did what i described. The quoted wording is confusing though.
