Hello! First post here. Just ordered 16x Grade B LF280K cells to make a 48V pack.

Now I'm thinking about how to arrange them to minimize floor space, and as part of that, I need to figure out if they can be stacked on their sides.

I've seen previous discussion on that on the forum, and seems like it just comes down to "whatever the manufacturer says". Unfortunately the official documentation does not seem to mention orientation at all.

Does anyone have any authoritative information on orientations allowed for these cells?

Thanks

Second post here - and was looking for that answer too. 2 stacks 8 high on their side fits the space I have nicely - but I can't find any information either.

I found a post on an EV forum where they had tried to get this info - they couldn't get anything in writing - but were told the same as above - only upright or short side down only.

Looking at this thread:

I think that just to be on the safe side, you shouldn't put too much weight (2-3 stacks) on the cells.
I'm not saying that this was the reason for that fire, but common sense would be that you don't want much pressure on the sides of the cells.

Yeah I've seen that, too. It's just hard to verify with the manufacturer for some reason.

They are tested with 300kgf clamping force though.

In the LF280K product specification I have (LF280K-72174 version B, see attachment), there is nothing regarding the mounting orientation.
If it would be critical because of the electrolyte touching the plates, they surely would have drop a line in the document.
I mean they specified the clamping force and forgot to tell the mandatory and super important correct mounting orientation?
I don't buy it.
Anyway I sent an email to Amy asking for clarification... will keep you posted.

PS: Planning to build up a 16S bank, two horizontal 8s strings laying on long side one on top the other.

Hi,

Just to be 100% sure,
Orientation does not matter as long the insulation is good, right?

Thanks!

There is no liquid dancing free in a LiFEPO4, you can orient it and mount as you wish.
Just make sure to not create pressure spots in the battery case which could compromise the insulation.
