Tiny Cabin - What To Do

Thanks Guys ,,, Lots to consider here & I really appreciate All of Your Insights !! A few points I should have mentioned; The inverter is only on when we are at the cabin & when we are not there the daily “parasite & small fan in the composting toilet” is 80Wh per day. The next thing is we...

Tiny Cabin - What To Do

So I have a small 300sf basic cabin that I have been using & upgrading over several years. Until recently it has been running on 600W of solar panels & 250Ahr @ 12vdc Rolls Batteries. It has run from April to October pretty much 100% off of the Solar Harvest. Recently, I installed a Victron...

    Campervan solar batteries question

Hi @goblin00 I use AGMs in my Cabin & Van. I’m Canadian & sometimes 🥶🥶 it is below freezing here. There are Pros & Cons to all battery chemistries. LFP & freezing don’t mix. The tech is getting better, & yes some batteries have self heaters, but there are complications. In saying that, if...

Debunk: Alternator DC to DC charger not required for big Lithium Battery

Hi @goblin00 Short answer “no” it isn’t ok ,,, it might work, but you could be stressing out your alternator. Longer answer is you would have to go thru the minutia of detail with all your equipment & wiring & vehicle ,,, etc to analyze your proposal. Example 150a rated alternator 🤔 ,,, what...

    mppt sizing

I like what @justinm001 wrote 👍 First, your need to identify your Battery Voltage ? 12v 24v or higher ? If you are 12v then best to go 100 | 50. IMO well worth the money to go “Smart” versions on the Victron with the Bluetooth as it makes it so easy to setup on your device & look at things...

    Is my water tank safe?

Metric & Water; Length, Area, Volume 0 Celsius 🥶 Ice 100 Celsius Boiling ( @ standards @ sea level ) 1 Calorie ,,, water temp raised 1kg 1 L Makes things pretty easy for “in head” calculations. Now, WATTs the Metric Unit for Electrical Power 😜. Of course “Water with Biological...

    Is my water tank safe?

I use the same totes ,,, mine had food grade alcohol in them from a booze manufacturer ,,, they were pretty sterile. Regardless, I disinfect them each year before use ,,, I also fill them with “Municipal Water” that of course is treated & most importantly “tested” constantly. Canada adopted...

    DC circuit breaker 250vdc

I’m pretty much of the opinion “not to rely upon” battery BMS to replace the safety of a Class T fuse if you think a Class T is needed. It is about “Interruption Amperages” ability ,,, DC. A thread For You...

    Is my water tank safe?

Safe for What ? Drinking Water ? Roof catchment water “could have” bird poop or other toxic materials on the roof. So in my mind the question should be is the system safe if you want it “Potable”. In my career, I have had to disinfect public drinking water systems. Typically that process...

    Who makes a 12v to 48v (56v) converter?

Hi @justinm001 I understand your concern of overloading any given alternator, with any given load ,,, not limited to inverters. I also understand you have fried equipment even without an inverter being present. Further, I think it really depends upon the vehicle, the equipment, & the design...

    Who makes a 12v to 48v (56v) converter?

That clarified your opinion & fair enough ,,, thanks @justinm001 An Inverter or Any Other Massive Load I guess another way of putting it would be “Any Massive Load” I wonder if a 500W or 750W inverter would work ok? Technically my Kisae 1250 can provide 14.7vdc @ 50 Amps = 735W / efficiency...

RV Question about solar panels, controllers, and batteries

I do not remember the voltage, but it is to show that the DC arc created would overpower the breaker’s ability. Here is a video on 220V ,,, AC vs DC to demonstrate the difference ( very visual ); With the above in mind, depending on the voltage one can visualize the gap needed it break...

    Who makes a 12v to 48v (56v) converter?

I’m a bit confused here. You obviously have experience, but I am not clear what you are against. Are you just against charging from a factory alternator via an inverter ? It is Dangerous ? Reading the above, sounds like you fried a bunch of stuff without an inverter being in the mix ?

    Who makes a 12v to 48v (56v) converter?

I can understand what you are describing @justinm001 Do you have any experience with alternator charging house batteries; DC2DC / Inverter / Alternator Direct ? DIY Van Building is a process of research, design, & build. IMO also “Experimental” somewhat like Experimental in Aviation ,,, just...

The newest “Thang” from EcoFlow; https://us.ecoflow.com/products/800w-alternator-charger But I think Inwould prefer “The Orton Method” 12vdc alternator / 120vac Inverter / AIO wall charger. The trick is to limit the power from the alternator ,,, depending upon the alternator & what it can...

Upgrade 12v to 48 volt in Camper van with GOpower 2000 inverter and 300ah agm. 12 v dc to dc charger

I see it the same as @HarryN Easy to go to 24vdc as you already have 12vdc wire in place. You can get some 12vdc to 24vdc DC2DC chargers assuming your alternator is 12vdc. If you post a schematic of your current electrical the forum can be more helpful giving you suggestions.

    EG4-3000 install in Van Conversion

I have not @ELT but I am curious & following your thread. I hope some forum members who have chime in & post their experiences. Vibration experience with this unit mounted in a van would be good to obtain before your install. So if not the EG4-3000, what else do you have in mind ?

Small off-grid cabin system design (in reverse?)

As @Rednecktek stated you have the math right, & that is theoretical. Theory & Practical operation can vary somewhat, but your plan & estimated use will keep you in the top 50% SOC. Battery bank configuration will make a difference. A big advantage of LFP is their ability to take the big...

Hi @cyberfed Honestly, not trying to “scare” you at all ,,, just offer some awareness on fuse / breaker options. Looking for the best big inverter for my van install

12vdc 🤔 ,,, Rough Math drop a zero off your watts to get your amp draw. 4000W = 400amps It isn’t quite like that, but usually a cheap conservative “quick reference”. Inverter choice considerations; Use pattern - Idle power cnsujed if you have to leave on 24/7 for appliances like a fridge...
