Solar Installer Job Available in AZ

There is a very established Arizona solar installation company looking for an installer. They have been in business for 30 years and one of the largest installers in Arizona. They want a person with Journeyman-level electrician skills, but they don't have to be a union Journeyman. If a person...

    MPPT parameter double check please

Sounds like you have put it some serious thought to this, well done. Have you considered a combiner box with SPD? Could protect and control each string with its own breakers and have SPD as well. Just a thought.

Autotransformer vs Paralleled Inverters for 220v

I was/am in your same situation. After tons of research I went with a 2nd Quattro 5k/48v unit. It has run flawlessly ever since. I did put in some time to load balance in the main breaker panel.

What is the simple answer for off grid grounding ?

I was wrong!!! I talked with my solar/electrician buddy this morning and asked him to re-explain the grounding thing. I am not sure what happened originally but I misunderstood what he had told me. The array should be bonded back to the main central grounding/earthing point. And that holds true...

What is the simple answer for off grid grounding ?

So here is what Victron had to say... "Off-grid system grounding Do not ground the positive or negative of the PV array. The PV negative input of the MPPT is not isolated from the negative output. Grounding the PV will therefore result in ground currents. The PV frames however may be grounded...

What is the simple answer for off grid grounding ?

I asked Victron about AC being introduced into the DC side of the system. Here is their response... "Quattro provides galvanic isolation between AC and DC." So if I am hearing them correctly there would be no AC current backfeeding into the array's DC wiring. Do you read it the same way? You...

What is the simple answer for off grid grounding ?

I didn't read anything about something they "didn't recommend" or "wasn't required". It stated that it is still permitted...as in it was permitted before. And I didn't see a single word "backbonded". And it pretty clearly states..." it is no longer required to be bonded to the premises grounding...

What is the simple answer for off grid grounding ?

What is the simple answer for off grid grounding ?

Great information and I appreciate your patience. Here is my question, probably more technical than I can handle...Why does a DC fault at the array require interaction with the N/G at the service panel when there is no direct connection between the DC equipment (array frame) and the N/G in the...

    New Batteries…new system?

I am not a fan of building batteries for my house to depend on. I have been doing this for 15 years and am still not comfortable doing it. I would rather depend on the pros and experts...along with their warranty :)

    New Batteries…new system?

I was at 24v and decided to go LifePo4. After crunching the numbers and wanting more power for house usage I went with a complete upgrade to 48v. 1xLifePo4 200ah @48v gives you 160 - 180ah of usage (80 - 90% DOD). I found that a single LifePo4 battery is not a good idea. At least 2 would be a...

What is the simple answer for off grid grounding ?

My post says this... "I used a 3x8' copper ground system for the house. 6AWG from panel to rod #1, then bonded to each additional rod by 6AWG. Rods are 10' spacing 2 x Arrays (9 PVs each) have their own earth ground. Each panel is connected to 6AWG bare copper then tied to single 6AWG which is...

What is the simple answer for off grid grounding ?

Yeah, still the terms tend to confuse me. My PV array is stand-alone earthed...with the metal combiner box, PV framing and SPDs are grounded to the earthed system (3x8' rods (10' spacing) + 50' of copper wire buried 1'). The AC side of the house system is all grounded, along with all DC...

I think I will trust his 30 years of experience as an electrician, solar installer, hundreds of installations, hundreds of approved plans and inspections. What is the simple answer for off grid grounding ?

The PV frame is connected to "grounding electrode conductor," Its own EGC. Should a lightening strike occur, or stray voltage, why would I introduce it into the house system via G and the G/N bond? Why not have it directed straight to earth? The SPD is also connected to the array's grounding...

DC-Living, all DC appliances for new Tinyhouse -Offgrid project?

I went with Victron due to reliability, reputation, capabilities, and programmability...a Tier 1 company...a huge worldwide supplier. 2xQuattro 5kw/120v run in split phase, balanced the load in the breaker panel. 2x150/70 Victron MPPT run in parallel. 1 handles 2 arrays totaling 3035w, the other...

What is the simple answer for off grid grounding ?

The arrays, panels and frames, are grounded and appear to comply completely with your reference. Having a ground at the arrays and then running a 2nd ground through the house system would result in a ground loop if I am not mistaken.

What plans are you looking for? I wired the house as any standard AC system would look like. The appliances were all standard, albeit high-efficiency, units.

Can I use two PV inputs in parallel???

My experience has shown that the most efficient way to handle a large PV array is to split it into multiple strings, each with its own MPPT and then parallel those into your system. In my case I have 2 sizable arrays, each going into a their own Victron MPPT, then paralleled using a Victron...

My research showed bifacial is not cost/benefit realistic at all...at least in my area. I bought used panels from Santan and varied the orientation for max production winter/summer. Great cost/benefit ratio. My Victron Quattro 48v/5kw inverter uses about 30w in standby. Keurig for wife's tea...

My DC well pump controller died after a bad lightening storm. Contacted the company and had a replacement the next day. Pump would have been the same resolution. Final Review Needed

Just some quick thoughts... I would go with 4/0 batttery to busbar. I would make sure that the battery switch can handle 58v not just 48v. For that many 200Ah batteries I would go with a 400amp Class T. If you use a Victron PowerIn, they are 1000amps on the busbar with 6 positions available...

    Backup Generator Size

Depends on how you want to use your “back-up” generator in the bigger scheme of things. If the genset is to provide assistive power to your inverter/charger due to low battery SOC, then I suggest that a person consider increasing their PV production and/or battery capacity. We are 100%...

    Pure sine wave inverter

2000w surge could draw 167amps at 12v. With only a 10' round trip wire run you would need 1/0 cable. For that set-up you would use a 200amp fuse on the 1/0 cable. Here is the calculator that you need to use to figure this out for your specifics https://explorist.life/wire-sizing-calculator/
