Searched both this forum and the net and coming up with little on the Tracer bp series. It's a bit cheaper than the equivalent an series and waterproof, both a bonus at the location this charge controller will be installed.

Using Roofing Tin as EMP shield

It appears decent emp shielding of sensitive electronics can be had rather affordably, and at a diy level, using roofing tin. Spare equipment would be kept offline and wrapped. IIRC, as I have long ago lost the link, pv panels are somewhat hardy when it comes to emp strikes. Anyone up on this?

Using Roofing Tin as EMP shield

Thank you for that information. It's nice to have someone that helps instead of instantly taking a condescending stance, because their view does no align. A box within a box concept makes me wonder how much attenuation two layers of corrugated steel would create.

Using Roofing Tin as EMP shield

Yes, they can come from solar flares. The more powerful threat would be a pre or first strike option disabling a large part of the infrastructure.

    Used Solar Panels

This is one of the better explanation I've seen on the issue of snail trails. Some manu claim this does not hurt performance but IMO, any crack is eventually going to cause an issue. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, but I have to wonder about several years into the panel's lifespan. This article...

    Used Solar Panels

Either. Used panels can be a good deal, or not. They can (SanTan's inventory is in perpetual motion) be bought for $.14/watt. I got no problem with buying panels with known issues for super cheap, if they fit the need. This includes cracked vinyl or snail trails. Although, their seems to be...

Using Roofing Tin as EMP shield

Maybe EMP shielding is a good idea, maybe not so much, but if it can be done in a affordable fashion, why not? I see people 'styling' the inside of their homes with the old fashion corrugated type roofing tin. If I were to build a shop, for the sole purpose of housing all the PV equipment...

I'm having an idea for off-grid heat... doodle check?

We used the round style kerosene heater for several years and while we could not smell it, visitors who were not using kerosene could smell the odor in the house. Like on the commercial, sometimes we become nose blind. But yeah, if possible, light and extinguish outside. A side benefit, it...

    Newbe starting small

The link scc calc I do think they added in a rather large safety buffer. More than likely, the panels will be dealing with considerable shading but it recently frosted so the trees will be mostly bare in a week. Guess I didn't realize that only four panels could generate this much power.

    Newbe starting small

Is this correct? With four 230 watt panels into 12v, the SCC will need to be ~100amp? What happens if it's a cheaper mppt and only 30 amps? Will four panels really generate this much power?

looking to buy used solar panels, need thoughts.

That was the plan; buy a pallet of 20+. That gets the cost per panel reasonable. I've been pondering reselling the panels but out here in the middle of cornfield county USA, I'm not sure if there is any demand for that sort of thing. Alternate plan is to buy a bit more expensive panel...

Don't do FB but had a friend look. Nothing but the harbor freight variety of panels around here. Craigslist is a huge no. They are pros and cons about living in the middle of cornfield county USA. @SolarSteve some of the ebay sellers are located on the east coast. Clr_solutions_llc ...

    Panels as Sheathing?

This thread is very interesting as I do plane on a shop building. In my case, panels would not be ideal for the main roof, but a 'lean-to' to shelter the cars, tractor, boat, etc., would be a most excellent idea.

    Newbe starting small

Been researching and day dreaming. For the cabin, the $30 Santan panels cannot be beat, but, there is a $300 shipping charge making the otd price of ten panels a bit too steep for my blood. At twenty panels per pallet the cost drops $.06 to $.20 watt. Nice price, but don't really need more...

    Racking Question - Metal Roof

Most houses around here use 5/8" chip board for roof decking. I can put a screw into that and pull it out with a prybar. I would not trust something as large as a solar panel, in strong winds, to stay on the roof.

    Metal roof with furring strips

There have been many a debate over placing the screws in a valley or peak. Either way will work with rubber grommet screws. A warning if putting solar panels over the screws, the grommet screws often require retightening as they age. Nope, no how, and no way would I want something like solar...

RV/Cabin 24v System all in one system question
