Higher voltage PV solar panels safety precautions

Do not touch open ends of wires with the panels hooked up. When you follow a simple order of operations: Connect cable to the MPPT first and then click the MC4 connectors together, there is usually no harm to you to be expected. Below 60V your skin is a good barrier in case you accidental touch...

Sorry was not my intend to offend anyone. My apologies. was the first reference google populated - I didn't do a reference check. I got a sensor welding station which goes down even further.

Destroyed $4K of alternator & regulator with a good Fuse

almost sounds you need a dump load with a voltage activated solid state thing which activates a few volt above normal operating conditions. Or put a lead battery in parallel which doesn't have the issue. It can be tiny 8ah AGM batteries in series. Just something to take the surge. Lead is...

Fuse holder nut was glowing RED!

DC amps not AC amps. "A transformer-style welding power supply converts the moderate voltage and moderate current electricity from the utility mains (typically 230 or 115 VAC) into a high current and low voltage supply, typically between 17V and 45V (open-circuit) volts and 55 to 590 amperes."...

Fuse holder nut was glowing RED!

glad you are fine. That is one of the reasons I go up in Voltage as soon as an application hits 100A. Tiny assembly errors and mechanical issues can have huge impacts. The average welder has 140-200A and I know how much damage a welder can to even the thickest metal. I don't like...

    Omicron (aka War on Christmas!)

this was meant as a joking comment, don't take it too serious. but thanks for the statistic- you just made my point, many of the top 10 are actually influenced by the points I quoted. First cause of hospital: 1. Septicemia (blood poisonings) is usually from cuts and other injuries...

    Growatt SPF trips GFCI occasionally.

that's a good idea an easy to try. I've measure the other day - and they seemed to be contacted internal. But since I don't know how good that connection is - jumper shouldn't hurt. It's mainly in line mode during the evening hours / night. Like I said - when the inverter switch is turned of...

    Omicron (aka War on Christmas!)

Without all those we wouldn't have a medical system :p Very few hospitals, would be actually necessary. They would be primary handling accidents.

    Growatt SPF trips GFCI occasionally.

I have a Growatt SPF 3000TL LVM and installed it in a RV. It's working great, aside from one little issue. Input GFCI trips occasionally. When I'm at home I plug in the RV with an adapter into an exterior 20A outlet (reduced the charging rate) which is protected by an GFCI outlet. After...

Possible increase of heart attack risk after mRNA vaccine.

This thread is really interesting. BTW I had covid the first go around a few weeks before the look downs began. Not fun, and I'm young and as healthy as it can be. No pre existing conditions etc. 10 days bed, heart palpitations, blood clots, tinnitus which all took months to resolve. I...

Question on charging LiFePO4 to 90% SOC with a charger in an RV

I got an old Parallax Powercenter Converter - it floats 45A at 13.6V It's always at that voltage. No float, not bulk, no intelligence whatsoever. Constant voltage power supply. Perfect for killing FLA early and AGMs slow. But actually decent to maintain lithium at around 90%...

    Chins or ENJOYBOT battery

Mine just arrived yesterday evening. Ordered from God's Beloved (Via Paypal Invoice) at the 21. November. Shipping from California at the 23. UPS ground and arrived 30. in South West Florida. So total turn around less then 10 days. 24V 200AH - a heavy battery (90+ pounds) - but nicely packed...

    Fire resistant covering for rooftop

All my roofs have metal as top material. Tiles would be fire proof too. If you got a fire and environmental hazard like shingles, you might look into the spec sheet about their rating. Not all Asphalt shingles are fire rated. Do you even use any roofing substrate under you gazebo? When you...

is the optimum year round angle what you really think it is?

Without knowing you peak usage time, hard to tell. For me in Florida - it's summer - so 85 degree :P (almost flat) We need 3x in the summer what we need in the winter. (A/C) how much space do you got? I have panels are different angles and different orientations. So you basically...

Solar Panel Angle Chart for Panel Tracker

modern panels are far better at capturing the sun at 90 angles. And it will get better. While trackers are a nice idea - panels are so cheap these days, Many just add panels for East and West orientations and over panel their inverters accordingly. So you basically build 3 panel arrays - one...

    Why not CIGS?

you only need on hinge on one side - you can park the RV in a different orientation to account the remainder. I'm RV with Solar for 5 + years now. And It's just a habit that I park somewhere with the windshield towards south while boondocking. Small compass on the dash makes it easy. My...

Big systems, how big is big? Biggest?

this is my idea - instead of roofing material - Bi-facial panels. After 48 inches there is no gain anymore - it's not hurting to have panels further up. While that is true - Bi-facials are cheaper- then - roof material PLUS regular panels. So any gain the rear provides is more cost...

    Why not CIGS?

What angle do you mean? Sun angle or panel angle? I honestly haven't looked at hourly data for years since the system runs flawless. It's grid tied, so I only glance over the monthly averages when the bill or usually the credit arrives. (,Yes in germany we get paid for the power we produce)

    Why not CIGS?

the CGIS panels have their peak production in the shoulder seasons. They don't like being hot and I got my peak production in Germany in Spring and Fall. Winter obviously the sun is only out from 8 to 4pm, so production is limited just due to daylight length. Can't tell much about shading...

    Why not CIGS?

Got a 10 year old CGIS Array with regular glass panels. By Würth Solar https://www.techinsights.com/products/ppr-0905-902 The manufacturer bankrupted and sold of their solar manufacturing. The best productive year was 8. At least no noticeable drop in output on the system level yet.

    Heating Pad Controller

all a matter of sensor placement. When you put a sensor outside- it will detect cold earlier - so the heater will turn early And you don't need to start at 32F/0C most low temp heating pads are around 40F 5C Futher modern LFP cells don't have issues at 0C they starting to get damage at...

    Heating Pad Controller

there are certainly charge controllers which turn only on when there is sun. You could combine that with just a Bi-metal switch in series. (0 Celsius switch) turn on at 0 and turn off at 5 degree. Bi Metal switches are awesome for heating and cooling applications. They draw zero current...

Big systems, how big is big? Biggest?

Depending which metric are you using. Total one year production probably yes. But when you only look at the 6 winter months in the northern hemisphere we might have a draw or the CIGS. The downside of thinfilm is clearly the lack of development money. It's not a bad technology, just all R&D...

Big systems, how big is big? Biggest?

I got a 5kw cigs Array, and a 2kw mono Array. When a regular cloud, as in single dense floating thing, drifts by and casts a Shadow over the panels. The thinfilm doesn't even notice while the mono panels drop output by roughly half. When the whole sky is covered it really depends. The...

Idle 'no load' Consumption: Specs vs Personal Observation

My Growatt 24V takes a lot of power while standby from the Grid/Generator, but less when running from battery/Solar panels. What value are you looking for? You might define that more narrow: Standby consumption, nighttime, from batteries. Further, my growatt is not showing the self...

Big systems, how big is big? Biggest?

they to get you hand on some CIGS panels. Thinfilm if you don't have space issues. There performance is not great in direct Sunlight (14%) but doesn't go down when clouds are there. doesn't go down when clouds are there.

    Potential dangerous location of multiplus

On the initial picture in this thread was an unused wall displayed next to the box where the victron is. No idea if that is in the way of something else. My wife is fine with the inverter in the living space. Maybe I got lucky 🤣 After I finished the installation all the wires will be...

    Potential dangerous location of multiplus

I don't have victron, since it didn't have the specifications I needed at time. But I think they have a high quality product with good features which just look great. I've opted to mount my inverter right in the living space of my RV. I think it looks cool and everybody asks - what is that...

    60a DC-DC Charger only pulling about 40a

many people in this board are more concerned about burning out their alternators because too much current is being pulled. You are one of the first one's to concerned about too little being pulled. I agree with your point, just that we have different objectives. My main one was - to charge...

    60a DC-DC Charger only pulling about 40a

I might have described that incomplete. I haven't concluded that it is the alternator. Just there is something in the chain which limits charging, even without a DC-DC in place - you would think that a direct connection will pull full available capacity from the alternator (180A in my truck)...

    48V LEAD w/ LITHIUM experiments

Thanks for doing this research! A few thoughts: 1. Lead AGM is good (not great) for extreme environments. It works perfect at high and even a big a low temperatures, 2. Lead is good as backup (boats, Marine) where a damage BMS can leave you stranded. A lead battery will still start the...

    RV install wiring layout?

Why do you want to have that switch? It's a mechanical thing which can fail. When you want to do like in the Absolut correct way - you would have a fuse after each battery - both batteries going to a busbar and from that busbar you go to everything else.
