Working with a local solar contractor?

The electrical and plumbing inspector in mine require the licensed contractor pull the permit. The plumbing inspector is a special kind of asshole. Even a simple code question is met with "Your licensed plumber will know the answer to that question." I I get it. Mostly I just want to...

Working with a local solar contractor?

I am considering putting in a grid-tie system in my house, and would like to do as much work as possible. My wife will not let me on the roof, so that is out. The local muni also is CRAZY strict (can't even call to ask them questions if not a lic. electrician), so I will need to work with a...

    Whats a good 48v bms??

The JBD BMS's are very popular https://overkillsolar.com/product/bms-100a-16s-lifepo4/ Andy from Off-Grid garage seem to like this unit: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003104573871.html

    Hybrid Inverter sizing advice

It looks like if you have a 0deg phase angle, that's what you are going to get on the output too. That would be no-bueno. This is from the LV5048 (and 6048) manual:

I dunno, maybe that would work. I'll watch the video. Thanks!

    Hybrid Inverter sizing advice

Not sure what the trick was you mention. My issue is that I would like to use my 120V generator to charge the batteries from time to time (using the all-in-on), which I cannot do it seems unless I go with 2 units. That would also allow for a split phase setup, but it has some disadvantages...

    Hybrid Inverter sizing advice

The product lines are a complete mess in my opinion. At least they are in the pure off-grid applications. Perhaps my use case is not common, but it seems like every unit (or combination of units) is lacking in some way. The LVX6048 seems to get me pretty close, I just wish I had a 240V generator.

    Hybrid Inverter sizing advice

I don't think that is the case. My understanding is that many of the 6Ks are low frequency inverters and can handle inductive loads better.

Looking for a unicorn off-grid inverter?

I am trying to find a split phase (or 240V+transformer) off-grid inverter in the 5-6KW range, that accepts a 120V AC input for charging. Preferably that can accept > 250VDC of solar. So far, no luck. The MPP LVX6048 and Growatt 5000 from MPP requires 240V input. The Growatt 6K split phase...

Generator for mpp solar lvx 6048?

Can you confirm I cannot use a 120v generator with the LVX6048? Did not realize that and would be a deal breaker

    NEC 710 / Split Phase

I was trying to determine if I can get away with a non-UL listed AIO unit for an off-grid property in Michigan, and was reading through the NEC, when I found this: 710.15(C) Single 120-Volt Supply. Stand-alone systems shall be permitted to supply 120 volts to single-phase, 3-wire, 120/240-volt...

    Good review on supplier.

FYI, tested the first cell (EVE 304).... 314 AH!!! I don't have the patience to test the rest. Will likely just top balance and build the battery and see what the total capacity is.

I wish there were a better selection at the higher seer ratings. Only finding a handful of options.

    Hybrid Inverter sizing advice

Thanks for the tip. I was also thinking that one of the 35-38 seer might be a better play. It would be awesome to keep the living spaces cool/warm all year. Saves me from having to winterize. I am looking now at the LVX6048. Split phase, 3KW on each.

    Hybrid Inverter sizing advice

Yeah, I don't plan on powering a dryer with it. Just a few mini-split units from time to time which don't draw nearly that much.

230V with midpoint transformer vs split phase transformer

Yeah, I don't think I plan on messing with the 230vac single phase units. I don't think I'll need the full wattage either, but nice to know there are options. Thanks!

What do you mean by "those"? The LVX6048 only has one PV input.

    Hybrid Inverter sizing advice

Thanks. I'm looking at 2 of the 3K units or one of the 6K units. Should be WAY more than I need, even with startup. Like I said, this is a vacation-type property (bedrooms in the back of a pole shed), so if for some reason I had to switch off the air in one of the zones, or heat with a...

230V with midpoint transformer vs split phase transformer

Getting into HAM is on the bucket list, but a long way away. Many hobbies are lined up once the kids are off to college ;) Just seems like adding complexity (going with the midpoint). I'd rather pay more even not to have to deal with it. Thanks.

230V with midpoint transformer vs split phase transformer

Why would I consider a 240V single phase hybrid inverter + midpoint transformer, vs a true split phase inverter (or two single phase 120V inverters). Just cost, or?

Shower thought - Using the shipping foam for battery build

With all the chatter about terminal stress and bus bars I am considering just taking the time to make my own copper wire with lugs to connect the batteries. I kind of find cable making satisfying :) I am also building this battery for cold climate, and it popped in my head to use the nice foam...

    Hybrid Inverter sizing advice

I'm going to be adding two bedrooms and a bathroom to a pole shed I have on a remote property, and am looking to install a 3 zone mini split (27000BTU/22 Seer). I am considering getting the 3K growatt unit (120V). By my calculation mini split could draw 1227W (27000/22). The only other loads...

    Good review on supplier.

Just got 16 of the 304's from Amy. Packaging seems good. Cells seem good at first glance, but only had time to open one package before leaving for the weekend. These three were all at 3.22V. Communication was great. Buying with FB and paypal is a bit weird, but you can't argue with results...

A few questions in preparation for cells

Yeah, I mean I get it. These are a huge investment. Batteries historically were finicky and expensive, so taking EVERY precaution to get every bit of value out of them was important. I think now its fairly easy to just keep "leveling up". I really don't imagine that I will be pulling even 3K...

Is my DIY ground mound idea stupid?

So, I've been thinking on this more. My main concern with this system is having consistent power throughout the year. This means enough solar capacity to generate 5 or so KWH a day . The other concern is snow on the panels. I may go many weeks without being up there to clean them. I am...

A few questions in preparation for cells

Thanks. Yeah, its all going in a battery box of some sort so it shouldn't be a problem to mount the fuse close. This thing is going in an unheated, uninsulated pole barn in the woods in the U.P. of Michigan, so most of my mental cycles are going into designing an insulated box I can heat with...
