switching heat pump HWS on/off daily

Hypothetically I'm looking to move my HWS to run from off gird inverter power. The HWS is currently connected to grid and set to only heat between 7am & 5pm to make use of our grid-tied solar. The drawback of this is the HWS consumes 35w idle power throughout the night, approx 0.5kwh pulled...

Victron used to monitor/record Epever voltages over 30 days

Just an example of the weird stuff I get up to in my workshop. Using a spare Victron 75/15 Smartsolar as a bluetooth voltage monitor. Why? I wanted to temporarily view the historical data of how the Epevers (4210AN & 2210AN) perform over a number of days as well as check the lows overnight. (A...

    Victron vs Epever, interesting data

    Here is some interesting data. It's a cloudy & drizzly winter morning here in Perth, Western Australia. Measurements taken at about 8am. 12v System @ 12.2v Epever 4210AN + 750w/66voc array (pmax 456w), true north, 28deg inclination = 2.1w 48v System @ 51.26v Victron 100/20 Smartsolar +...

    No pre-charge resistor solution

Just putting it out there, this is how I was able to connect a large 48v inverter without a pre-charge resistor. Firstly touching the positive post on battery #1, then repeating on batteries #2, #3 and #4. Spark was minimal and nothing blew up, cheers ?

running my 2.5hp air compressor from my 6000w hf inverter

Just putting it our there for the off-grid community, to show it's possible. I was just messing around in the shed and didn't expect it to work but when it did I thought I'd better make a video. By "power" I meant to say "air pressure"

Solar EV charging on the go (my simple idea)

My wife and I have had a 2022 MG ZS EV for a couple of months, and while I don't think I'll be tampering with any of the factory high voltage systems, it would not be too difficult mounting a large flexible panel to the roof and simply supply additional power to the vehicles 12v battery to...

    A hypothetical float switch

I'm wondering how one might be able to setup a hypothetical "float switch" to charge a secondary battery bank Eg. When the SCC goes into "float" a relay can be triggered to begin a secondary charging process (or diversion load), and also able to be un-triggered should the SCC of the primary...

Shout out for Cnswipower, fast international delivery

Hi all, I just wanted to say that I received really fast shipping to my home in Australia for a 6000w 48v Cnswipower inverter from China. It was ordered on the 4th of Dec, arrived on the 19th of Dec. I expected it to be 2 or 3 months at least. I decided to go with Cnswipower for my latest...

    Inverter wind tunnel

Just for the sake of it I made a little box for an inverter which acts as a wind tunnel with an almost silent computer fan. I noticed the inverter getting especially hot during these past summer days and it's little built-in fan whirring away at 119dba. The inverter is rasied a few mm in the...

3x36 cell array to "help" a 48v system

Hi all, I'm just curious about the viability of using an existing 3x36 cell array to help charge a 48v system, just because they're already on the roof and not doing any harm. The 48v system will primarily consist of 8x72 cell panels in a 2s4p config split between two victron 100/20's. I...

Topping up my AGMs with Gels

I have been entertaining the idea of using a two spare 12v 60a Gel batteries to top up the AGM batteries of my existing system. As these batteries require 14.1v they will have their own SCC, an old epever tracer 2210an. I've got a 180w panel laying around so that will have to do for now. I have...

    Wifi monitoring options?

I've recently started using a "grid connect" 240v smart plug on my inverter to monitor the loads on the inverter while I'm away from home. Does such a device also exist to monitor the battery voltage? All I can think of is an IP camera pointed at a volt meter :)

    Suggestions for re-bulk offset voltage?

Hi all, I'm just looking for some thoughts on setting the "re-bulk offset voltage" with my victron controllers. By default it is 0.2v, I have changed it to 0.5v as that is more in line with what I'm used to seeing on my former Epever Tracers (boost reconnect 13.2v) I have an AGM bank...

    Victron over-paneling?

My Smartsolar 100/30 specifies a "nominal PV power" of 880w @ 24v Is this the nominal PV input or output? (I note 29.2v*30a = 876w) There's no reference I've found in the manual to over-paneling apart from the following 1. The solar charger will limit input power if more PV power is...

What circuit breaker can I use with a 6000/12000w 24v inverter

    removing limescale from panels

GEL vs AGM for mobility scooter

I'm just wondering if there's any specific reason that GEL might be better in powering a mobility scooter vs AGM. I recently picked up this speed demon for the kids to play with and it currently has a pair of 60ah GEL batteries. I might plan on replacing them with a pair of bigger AGMs unless I...

Inverter plugged into house during blackout

We had a blackout for a few hours last night. A device that records max voltage?

I have a feeling that my epever mppt's cannot keep up with sudden clouds/sun changes and are causing my system to overvolt for 1-2 seconds intermittently, which also causes my charge meter to go blank and my inverter to momentarily shut off. I usually notice when I'm working in the shed and...

Grid-tied wind turbine (random idea of the day)

I have a spare 700w turbine, spare 20a PWM turbine charge controller, spare 600w MPPT grid tied inverter and a spare 3S lipo BMS. I could have 3x 18650's hovering around 10v (3.33v each) connected to the inverter (which operates with voltages between 10v & 32v). When power is supplied by the...

    Over-paneled strings per mppt

I recently had a 5kw grid tied system installed with 6.6kw of panels. Due to roof space available on either side of the house (east & west), the installers put 2.6kw/360v on the East string and 3.9kw/540v on the West. This piques my curiosity because the inverter specifications recommend 3.3kw...

    Braking vs Dumping

I'm toying with the idea of replacing the dump load with 2 small relays triggered by a voltage sensing relay which short the phases on the AC side of a the rectifier. It occurred to me over a beer that the brake doesn't create any Vsag and everything would be a lot simpler.

What to do with 6x 25ah LFP prismatic cells.....

I have 6 cells which I extracted from a faulty sealed unit (dead BMS and 2 bloated cells) which was originally 4s2p. I can't really decide what to do with the 6 remaining cells. Options 1s6p for 3.2v 2s3p for 6.4v 3s2p for 9.6v; or... 6s1p for 19.2v No idea what to do with any of those voltages

Why do people still choose flooded lead acid?

I'm wondering why flooded lead acid deep cycle batteries are still a common choice in off grid banks. What are the advantages? Do they perform better in cold weather? Me personally, I couldn't wait to get rid of them. I see them as inferior compared to AGM/VRLA or Gel.

I just signed up. I have 2 small offgrid sheds on my property, a total of 1kw of solar and a 400w wind turbine. I enjoy making and using my own power and enjoy discussing such stuff. Look forward to some good discussions.
