Troubleshooting SMA and REC - Mostly (all?) Solved

REC balancing is tricky. When it's balancing the finned body of the bms gets quite warm/hot.... you can go into settings and select the max temperature allowed with the temp sensor in the bms. I lowered mine as it got quite hot I figured that's not great for the circuitry components inside the bms.

SMA 6048 rec-bms SOC wrong problem

So.... the SOC and battery voltage is varying all over the place. Today it's doing this weird thing of using 0.4-1A from battery negative flow (discharging) and SOC dropped to like 87%. SOC is supposed to be close to 100% in standby all the time in case the grid drops. So I was trying to get it...

SMA 6048 rec-bms SOC wrong problem

Thanks for the info. One of my 6.0kw SB 41’s is on critical loads panel but I have it temp wired to welder outlet on main panel direct gridtie. I’ve got my grid code for changes…. Was told turn SB to offgrid. Rule21 … I’ll do some reading. Will be good to get SB hooked up so we survive grid...

SMA 6048 rec-bms SOC wrong problem

Not that related to this bms query, but anyone using one of these on an SMA sunny island...

Troubleshooting SMA and REC - Mostly (all?) Solved

https://diysolarforum.com/threads/sma-6048-rec-bms-soc-wrong-problem.80156/ Take a look at my thread where rec bms did weird stuff. Most of the way down are instructions on reseting the SOC when you think the pack is fully charged. It did do something weird where it did not connect to grid...

SMA 6048 rec-bms SOC wrong problem

Well that was sure weird.... I was able to go in change the SOC and cell max voltages as instructed. Then on the sunny islands there was no "G" for grid connection and for about 1/2hr it was running my loads off the battery, up to like 45A draw. I was starting to freak out a bit searching...

SMA 6048 rec-bms SOC wrong problem

Yes that’s a good idea before a bad weather incident to up voltage just in case. I’m looking for a reasonably priced auto transfer switch that the sunny island can control for generator input. Here is quick reply back from REC: Set the Balance voltage end to the same value as the End of charge...

SMA 6048 rec-bms SOC wrong problem

Thanks for the info. Yes I purposely didn’t set voltage to 4.2 because 80% or so is better long term lifetime. Actually for backup not daily cycling it’s super relaxing easy on the cells vs an electric car (depleted daily perhaps). I guesstimated capacity somewhat lower than theoretical. But no...

SMA 6048 rec-bms SOC wrong problem

I have two SMA 6048 sunny islands off a 24.5kwh nissan leaf pack gen2 modules. Anyhow, everything was working fine until we had a power outage 14hrs long and the system ran for about 7hours and quit depleting the battery. I didn't have the ABB disconnect relay/breaker wired up for disconnect by...

Rec ans sma finally play together

I'm about to get my 6048 SMA's talking to REC BMS. Quick question for anyone with experience.... I've got it all wired to my Nissan Leaf pack and bought the software/usb cable for programming. Managed to communicate with it and fix all settings. However, after maybe 4-5 minutes the BMW gets...

    Sunny island 6048

I'm not sure that's something I need. The REC bms will control an ABB 300A breaker and shut it off should the battery go less than a certain DOD, however, my critical loads panel only has smaller loads such as some lighting, fridge, freezer, etc. My battery is Gen2 nissan leaf plus one module so...

    AC-Coupled (OffGrid) Advice Requested

You can only add 6700w of inverters behind each 6048. If you have two basically that's two 6kw inverters ac-coupled. The 56A transfer relay inside the sunny island limits this. I don't know the answer but interfacing older inverters may be easier as they probably have rs485 communication vs the...

    Sunny island 6048

No I don't.... is that something to dump power into like a water heater element if battery is full or something to disconnect power to loads before inverter quits due to low battery?

    Sunny island 6048

So I had a few discussions with Mike Mahon from SMA via my wholesale distributor here. The straight goods is the new Sunny Boy 41 series inverters don't have any direct communication protocol to talk to Sunny Island 6048. I'm told once the Sunny Islands are setup and configured, to set my two...

I haven’t had A chance to check pricing on rec yet.... where’s best place to buy? If I’m going to blow $500+ it has to work.

I had an email from info@momentenergy.ca after I saw their ad on tv last month (check out their website) and they told me about this: https://www.elithion.com/vinci_lv.php#tab2 which is looking pretty good has various com capabilities. Check it out let me know your thoughts.

    Sunny island 6048

I suppose in a grid-down situation, since my two SB 6kw inverters are downstream of the grid they would just reboot after seeing the grid from the SI is up.... if it's too much juice I could always manually flip the main power switch on one or both if the SI isn't controlling their output very...

    Sunny island 6048

I’ve seen a few big kWh installs with leaf modules and they seem fairly stable voltage throughout the cells. Some people haven’t balanced in years. Also offgrid will be harder on the battery than grid backup where it mostly just floats. I know what you mean with SMA supporting biz-to-biz which...

So is the COMsync considered CANbus? I still have to figure out how to interface new 41 series sunny boys to my 6048’s. thanks for heads up on batrium shunt issue. I have electronics background as well but not EE, I’m extremely surprised that the batrium hardware is so particular on how...

    Sunny island 6048

I thought madsci was using a victron charge controller and interfacing into that. So I went back looked at page 53 and 57 of the manual https://files.sma.de/downloads/SI4548-6048-US-BE-en-21W.pdf and the COMsycIN and COMsyncOUT are supposedly CANbus? Same communication channel where SI master...

    Sunny island 6048

Hang on, the SI6048's have CANbus? News to me. I understood you need the rs485 piggyback card to get the inverter to communicate at all. Hmm. I did have an email from Ian @ ZEVA and he says "Unfortunately our BMSs don’t have an RS485 interface and only support CAN bus, so if your inverters only...

    Sunny island 6048

Newbie here. I'm just about to order a bms that has rs485 but batrium says the WM5 (not leafmon - I'm using leaf modules gen2 14s7p) has CANbus of course my 6048's have rs485. Batrium insists I pay for 30min tech line hookup. Well can the WM5 do rs485 or not what the heck? I'm not spending $800...
