Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

I have a new question. In several videos that I have watched lately I noticed that they are using a two pole breaker (one pole positive and the other pole negative) between the solar panels and the controller. I currently just have a single pole breaker on the positive wire. Should I be concerned?

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

My final calculations showed that I was about 225 pounds lighter with the electric motor, batteries, panels, etc. She sits up about an inch higher in the stern because of this. I have been planning to put maybe 150lbs of lead in the bottom of the bilge but just never got to it. The weight in the...

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

Another update after 1 1/2 years everything is working great. I did add the second solar array of 4 60W panels so I now have 520W. I have taken the LiFePO4 batteries down to 20%DOD and everything works great. The Daley BMS is still working fine after 82 hours on the motor clock and many...

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

Pete sorry for the late response. I haven't been on here for some time now. I started out looking at the cobbling together route but was quickly overwhelmed with all of the options and had little to no knowledge of what I was doing at that time. The electric yacht was a good all in one...

Mixed Ah LiFePO4 strings in parallel

I want to setup a 48V system for a sailboat the has four 330Ah batteries in series 330Ah at 48V and parallel a second string of 200Ah LiFePO4 for a total of 550 Ah at 48V. I'm getting mixed responses from suppliers but saw a video from Will that said you can do this. I'm looking for find this...

Picking brains...help with Engine swap to electric...32ft Cabin Cruiser

I converted my 30' 10,000 lb sailboat to electric 2 years ago and am thrilled with the results. I have a 10KW motor with 202Ah of LiFePO4 batteries. It will push the boat to 6.2kts (hull speed is 6.4) but thats using about 200 amps which means that I have only 1hr before I'm out of battery...

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

Just a quick update. After 3 months everything is working great. The 10Kw motor pushes the boat along fine with great torque right from the get go unlike a diesel or gas engine where you have to build up the rpm's to get into the good part of the torque curve. The 202Ah LiFePo4 battery is...

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

OK I understand the theory. So I would run the motor with the switch in the A+B position and if the BMS shuts off the motor will still run on the B connection correct? How do I detect that the BMS (A) has discounted?

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

Bubba thanks for the thumbs up. As far as regeneration I do get it in spurts but it is not enough to offset the amps needed to keep the contractor closed. I have a 2 bladed prop maybe with a 3 bladed prop it would work but I think that you really need a bigger boat with higher hull speed but...

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

I launched on May 5th with just 4 79Ah group 24 AGM batteries in series to provide 48 V. I already had three that were new last year so rather then delay my launch waiting for the 3.2V cells to arrive from China I bought the 4th battery. I waited to long to order my 3.2 cells from china. I was...

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

OK now I'm confused. In your earlier post you said "One thing we see done quite often on such propulsion conversions is using a BMS that is not common port (uses FET for the power disconnect) design." In this quote you say that a not common port uses FET's. Then above you are saying that a...

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

Possibly a bit when I get over 6 kts. My hull speed is 6.4 kts and there is almost always a stiff breeze in Nantucket Sound so I'm at hull speed often. We will see and I'll report after some time sailing. I will hopefully launch in early May.

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

Here is the latest update on my conversion. The motor is installed. I had to extend the stringers and shorten the prop shaft but all of that went well. I changed my plans on 12V power I already had three 12V 79Ah group 24 AGM batteries so I bought a new 12V 79Ah group 24 AGM and wired them in...

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

Not to worry. I was referring to the common port BMS diagram (see below) and simply mis-stated. I meant to say to bolt the two P- together and bring it out to where the P+ is shown in the top right corner of the diagram. The P+ and P- essentially become the battery + and -. If you bought a...

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

My Daly 16S 300A 48V BMS arrived but with no wiring instructions. It has two P- and two B- cables. I can't find any wiring instruction that show the double cables so I assume from the wiring instruction of the ones with single cables that I just bolt the two P- together with the battery + and...

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

It is/was a Volvo Penta MD7A 2 cylinder 14.3 HP. I removed it from the engine bay this week. My new 10KW electric motor assembly arrived today. Still wailing on the battery cells (16 3.2V LiFeO4) and BMS. Both are coming from China. I will start the motor install next week.

How should I configure 16 LiFePO4 cells in series for 48V in tight space?

I tried that at first but I was worried that the two terminal (+ & -) going to the BMS were to close together. I'll see how close they are in actuality when the batteries arrive. I also thought that I could do it this way and put an insulator between them, maybe a piece of G-10 or FR-4.

Here's how I plan to configure my 48V 200Ah pack and BMS. The dimensions do not include the battery pack enclosure.

Yes, it helps. I have not ordered yet but I could not find in Daly literature that the lug came with it.

    How to size a BMS?

I'm looking for the three hole terminals (lugs) that will attach to the daly BMS 250A and above units. I found a video that shows them but have not been able to find the terminals by them selves to buy. Do they come with the BMS? I can't find it in the literature.

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor

It's all about setting up our boats for how and where we use them. What is right for one person may be wrong for another. I sail primarily in Nantucket sound where there is always wind. The most common forecast in the summer is 10-15 gusting 20 or 25. In the spring and fall it's more like...

Sailboat conversion from 14 hp Diesel to 10 Kw 48V electric motor
