has anyone heard of charging FLA to 2.7V each

Thanks folks. I have a house UPS build happening with 8x6V GC2 batteries. since it is for power outages, the FLA will mostly stay at full charge, so FLA was the way to go. I just want to make sure that the batteries are not being killed by my ignorance

has anyone heard of charging FLA to 2.7V each

I saw this post on the "must be true" interweb http://www.climtechsolutions.com/great-lead-acid-battery-swindle/ Any technical value to this? I do see how some "smart" chargers, SCC, etc do use 2.7V / cell for an "equalization" cycle periodically - but this article is saying drive it to 2.7...

I bought these 2 BMSs, expecting to DIY 2 LiFePO4 batteries. Got shafted on batteries by Michael Caro. I am now using GolfCart 6V FLA batteries. They are New in Box, never connected. Purchased March 2021 - when I ordered my batteries from Michael Caro. 4s BMS 120a LifePo4 Battery Management...

    5s2p

Do these 2 strings have to be individually fused? I think I have read elsewhere that 3 or more parallel need to be individually fused. I can't think of a reason why 2 don't, and 3 or more do. I picked up 10 used 230W Sharp panels that I am going to 5s2p as well into a 250V max MPPT

Renogy 800W Solar kit has 4s2p panel set up - is it safe out of the box?

hurrah for practical knowledge - if the panel has a diode in the box before the wire, then I am all set. I would protect each circuit as appropriate with breakers/fuses/etc. just to keep it robust - but now I don't have to worry about the back feeding issue. Will was talking about some of this...

Renogy 800W Solar kit has 4s2p panel set up - is it safe out of the box?

If paralleling multiple strings, say 4, how does one prevent a string from back feeding to another string? The PV combiner has diodes to prevent back feeding. Does each panel have a blocking diode to prevent the PV cells from being a power consumer than a power producer? Else could have PV...

Renogy 800W Solar kit has 4s2p panel set up - is it safe out of the box?

I am looking in craigslist, have found some used panels. My question was about paralleling not the kit. I looked at kits to see how vendors are selling the paralleling and in the kits they just hook up the panels in parallel with an MC4 connector. Will talked about using a PV combiner box...

Renogy 800W Solar kit has 4s2p panel set up - is it safe out of the box?

I thought paralleling solar panels required protecting one array from feeding the second array with diodes or a combiner box? I did not see that the connectors in their kit had a diode built in. What am I missing?

Typicall all in one (MPP/Growatt/etc) - can it provide output from battery pack and AC/DC converter simultaneously?

Nope - haven't purchased diddly. Have time to think this through first I did purchase couple overkill solar BMSs last year (4s 120A & 8s 100A) but got the shaft from Michael Caro on batteries so the BMSs are sitting idle, NIB. Now I am thinking to unbundle, use a Giandel 3000W24V inverter, Aims...

Typicall all in one (MPP/Growatt/etc) - can it provide output from battery pack and AC/DC converter simultaneously?

I heard from Ian @ watts247. His reply. "Mpp or growatt. The same result. 3500W draw on a 6kw inverter, the battery will have to supply it, If battery runs low and switches to Ac input, the 1500W generator week be unable to supply 3500W, so the system at some point will shut down . It can't...

Typicall all in one (MPP/Growatt/etc) - can it provide output from battery pack and AC/DC converter simultaneously?

Thanks DThames - let me understand and double check - Set #01 as SBU, #11 as 25A, #14 as SNU, and if night time, and generator is hooked up, the unit will use 25A DC power from the charger output & the batteries to power the inverter. This is distinct from inverter chargers - which choose...

Typicall all in one (MPP/Growatt/etc) - can it provide output from battery pack and AC/DC converter simultaneously?

I want to use a 6500W all-in-one to provide surge power to a planned off grid cabin - Solar with a 2000W(1600 continuous) Honda gen as backup. If I use a separate charger driven by the generator, and run the inverter from the battery/charger setup - the batteries will act as an energy...

DIY battery pack, can the inverter and charger be used simultaneously?

Electronic Transfer switch with load shedding 120V 30A Yes, but the transfer switch handles that - disconnects Utility and puts them all on one phase no offense - more questions mean I examine it in more detail nope $1.7-1.8K it is, $900 LiFePO4 8x271Ah, $150 overkill BMS, $200 Aims Charger...

DIY battery pack, can the inverter and charger be used simultaneously?

The end goals of this exercise are: 1- not have to go attach the generator right away - eg. middle of the night, especially if I do not notice the outage 2- For an extended outage, to have only one generator running, and to use the UPS to handle transient higher usage. 3- If going away in winter...

DIY battery pack, can the inverter and charger be used simultaneously?

This is a house UPS in an ON-grid situation (my typo in OP). Right now, when we lose power, I have to go out there and hook up both the generators, in parallel, and let them run. Most of the time, one generator would be enough, to run the heat and fridges, unless they kick in together, or if I...

DIY battery pack, can the inverter and charger be used simultaneously?

hmmmm - dunno how I could accomplish that, but lemme talk to Rube Goldberg and think of scenarios. I will likely program the BMS to float the cells to 3.5, and then terminate the charging cycle. These cells will last my lifetime and get willed on to progeny - so I am not really worried :p...

DIY battery pack, can the inverter and charger be used simultaneously?

My aims charger will only put out 37A @28 V. So appx 1000 watts. That’s less than my steady draw so I will accumulate battery juice incrementally. Then battery will catch surges. And will replenish fully when I have grid power reestablished

"Grounding Basics" Not Basic Enough for Me :)

:p I grew up in 220V country doing stage audio visual in school. We used to wire 100V to a metal tool on the ground, and start l"looking for it" and wait for some smart ass to "find" it and pick it up. It amused our adolescent minds. 220V AC - will "wake" you up - while 10V can kill you ...

280 4s actual watt hours on inverter?

    I calculate it per cell as Energy total 280 * 3.2 = 896 VAh * 82% (inverter)= 735Wh output Rate @ 1C = 735Watts. ( :p ) factor it by the DOD that makes you happy. 4S (12.8V) = 3kWh, if you need 3kW rate (go to 24+ Volt system:)) unless you size everything for 300 Amps  $$$ 8S (25.6V) =...

    FLA v LiFePO4 - seems equivalent initial $$ - what am I missing?

K K k - I get it, I got lazy and busted... I am going to put 110V plumbers tape around my batteries, and hook it to line input. Then have temp relays to heat as appropriate - the BMS sensor will kick on charging at the appropriate time. One of these guys will get it - and do it - and...

    FLA v LiFePO4 - seems equivalent initial $$ - what am I missing?

fortunately, my implementation is not shaky :p - house UPS will be static, Milk crate LFP generator will be static while in use, with occasional relocation. So somewhat less risk for me

    FLA v LiFePO4 - seems equivalent initial $$ - what am I missing?

no doubt. I just came in expecting to see LFP 3-4x $$$$ compared to FLA/SLA/AGM - for my application, and my access to resources. Using @Will Prowse web-site and this forum as resources, I bought my LFP cells through the group buy here, overkill BMS, AIMS charger, Giandel inverter etc. I am...

    FLA v LiFePO4 - seems equivalent initial $$ - what am I missing?

Since I am not going to be cycling these as in a Solar set-up - I was just talking about the initial outlay for my requirements. I was stunned that the initial outlay was equivalent. Using longevity/toxicity/fragility/efficiency factors - its not a fair fight - LFP FTW - by almost a factor.

    FLA v LiFePO4 - seems equivalent initial $$ - what am I missing?

I did realize that in this function, they would not cycle - so cycle life was a non-factor, but sitting charged was. LiFEPO4 still won because the cells can deliver rated capacity at 1C. Allowing for that I am not intending to keep them topped off - probably top charge to 90%-95% - since they...

    FLA v LiFePO4 - seems equivalent initial $$ - what am I missing?

Doing the math for $$/kWH at battery level, I am getting 4x 271Ah cells and the overkill BMS for ~ $600 all in, and getting 271*3.2*4 = 3469 kWh so about $0.17/Wh - DIY, vs about $0.37/Wh for an inexpensive (Ampere Time 300Ah @Amazon) purchased system. Not bad...
