    DC breaker wiring

The demonstration was to show what happens if the current flow through the device is not in the correct direction for a polarised DC breaker. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother with this forum any more.

    DC breaker wiring

The topic of DC breaker wiring polarity (ie, which side of the breaker is the source and which is the sink) has been raised a few times on the forum. I'm not sure if this clip has been posted before, but if not this is a must for everyone to watch.

Wiser3 Solar charge controller communication help

It'll probably be all gooble-de-dook to you but you can at least tell if there is any attempt at serial communications between your PC and the charger. Grab a copy of sysinternal's portmon, start it running and then open the solareagle program and see if anything is logged. You can set it to...

The problem you'll face with the portable 'solar generators' is starting power tools. Some tools are well known to be gluttons when it comes to starting current. Check the DavidPoz youtube channel, he has had a few adventures with his saws and breaking inverters. I'm not sure a soft starter...

    Powertech 2kW 24V Inverter Blew....

Jaycar says that one is discontinued but it goes up to 95V on the solar input so that's OK and 50A so covered on the battery output side too. https://au.renogy.com/rover-li-30-amp-mppt-solar-charge-controller/ Only basic options available via the front panel. More detailed programming needs...

    Powertech 2kW 24V Inverter Blew....

OK, they have Vmp of around 30V. You are good to put two of them in series if you want to use a MPPT controller. Both panels would give you around 23A to the battery full tilt, if they ever get there, so a 30A MPPT controller would cover you if you weren't going to add more panels down the...

Can Lead Acid & Lithium Battery Banks be Paralleled to 1 Inverter?

If the controller is well designed it won't go poof. I think there has only been one instance of a MPPT controller possibly going poof reported on the forum, despite several people, myself included, trying to provoke just that. In my own testing I found that some controllers produce output...

    Powertech 2kW 24V Inverter Blew....

PWM controllers output a bit above battery voltage. They work by, effectively, connecting the panels to the battery and letting the load of the battery pull them down to near battery voltage. You say your panels in series are about Vmp 30, that's a pretty low Vmp per panel so please post a...

    Powertech 2kW 24V Inverter Blew....

Are you dealing with shading? If not the panels in series with a MPPT controller would be a better solution as it would give you more power out at the same sun exposure than the PWM controller would. If the PWM controller is working correctly it shouldn't have gone over voltage so that might...

    Gravatar Not Working

Open Chrome's console, go to the network tab, then force refresh the page and see if gravtar is being blocked. I use Firefox (with ghostery) and Chromium under linux. Chromium doesn't block gravatar, but who knows what lurks in Chrome.

    Powertech 2kW 24V Inverter Blew....

It does sound like some electrolytic capacitors vented. The big ones can burst with quite a pop - note this is not exploding just the vent on the top rupturing. It's possible your charger went over their voltage rating. The battery's BMS may have disconnected without you noticing too...

Ghostery's default rules were blocking gravatar for me. Might be worth checking browser extensions etc. Open the brower's console (F12 perhaps), force refresh this page and see if gravatar is being blocked.

Can Lead Acid & Lithium Battery Banks be Paralleled to 1 Inverter?

You'd have to prevent voltage flowing back into either bank from the other. The reason being they have very different charging requirements. Yes, some people do parallel them direct but they understand that either the lead acid suffers, or the lithium does. Typically they set up to preserve...

A 'step down transformer' would be a better choice IMO. The cheaper ones do the voltage change just as well but don't provide isolation from the mains, which isn't a problem normally. The 50/60Hz thing shouldn't make any real difference apart from rotation being a bit slower...

Do load terminals on charge controller bypass batteries?

FWIW 100% of the SCCs that have load output terminals that I've had my hands on the load output terminals are essentially paralleled with the battery but can be switched off, typically the - lead is switched. If the SCC starts without a battery present it may turn the load output on, but it...

Can you dim down a huge LED light bank?

BigClive took one of the typical buck regulators apart in this clip. Lowering the current involves a couple of resistors, but it is all at mains voltage so not something a beginner should be fiddling with. As a side note, it's a buck regulator so the output is referenced to mains too so if...

Anyone else frustrated with cheap chinese junk wire lugs and flimsy connector, where to find good ones?

If you are buying from Australia I tracked down a good seller that has decent terminals. It took a few refunds to get there though. So many fakers selling fake junk. One supplied terminals that were 0.1mm thick stating good for 100A. Presumably it was for lighting a kero heater so needed to...

Do load terminals on charge controller bypass batteries?

You'll be glad to know you aren't right. The Victron SCC will operate entirely off solar including powering up. This is a requisite since it can charge a flat battery which in the case of lithium means providing DC to wake up the BMS after low power disconnect etc. As far as being a battery...

Why does voltage shoot up so quickly when charging?

Monitor your battery voltage and current directly, ie use a decent meter. A clamp multimeter etc. Ensure your charger is actually going to absorption/boost voltage. Monitor the amps flowing. If they rapidly fall once you reach absorption voltage either your battery was not really half...

Why does voltage shoot up so quickly when charging?

What voltage is your charger changing to float mode? Absorption for a typical AGM is 14.2 to 14.7V. Once there the charger should not just switch back, it should hold there until the current tails off, for a 1040AH battery call it 30A, or until many hours have passed assuming it has a time...

    20 ah Miady Battery

Typical 100W panel is 12V class, let's pick one of Renogy's. Vmp 17.9, Imp 5.72. Miady battery is 12V lifepo4, so put it at 12.8V to 14.2V. Assume the panel actually produces 100W at a given time. MPPT, 100W in, 98% efficient conversion - may not be depends on the curves, 98W out. PWM...

Yet... no service fuse on mains leadin to premises. Don't worry, if there's a short the wires will melt off the house and break the circuit. ;)

what really happens with an overload

15A is your plug/outlet rating though, right? The cabling and breaker behind it has higher, ie one can have more than one outlet on a circuit even when taking into consideration diverse loads. Standard outlets (a single General Purpose Outlet, GPO) here are rated at 10A but the wiring and fuse...

Why does voltage shoot up so quickly when charging?

11V was measured under load / excessive charging current / batteries are degraded. Pick your poison. Measuring voltage under load does not give a true indication of the state of the battery. When charging is performed the load will be largely powered by the charger so the battery floats up to...
