Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

Is this possible with the Radian while maintaining the hybrid feature? Their suggested wiring shows everything that will be run during power failure be rewired to a "critical loads" panel. The only thing I would not want to be run during a power failure is the water heater and dryer which I...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

Well I ended up getting a used "package" that included the Load Center anyway so I guess I'll end up using it since it's included. I do still have to figure out how I'm going to end up wiring it, hopefully without having to rewire most of my current main panel to a "critical loads panel" which...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

Well I just ordered the Outback Radian GS4048A-01 with the MATE 3 and a FlexMax 80. I did not purchase their pricey "Load Center" so interested if anyone else has rigged one up and how they went about it? Materials to get started with ...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

Yeah I do have an interlock on my panel for generator input. Humm for some reason I thought it used transformers like the Magnum? I guess I assumed that because of the weight and thought of it as a hefty unit. Your not confusing it with their SkyBox hybrid?

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

Yeah for a minute those cheap MPP inverters look tempting, even the pricey Sol-Ark is transformerless!? I have a well pump to run so I think I am going to stick with the Outback Radian. Also plan to install the Midnight surge protectors...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

and that's using SMA? edit: I thought that once the Radian inverter converts the DC from the battery/panels to AC everything is "AC Coupled" from that point on. I guess I need to do some more research on this?

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

Has anyone set up their Radian with a DYI "Load Center" box? Would be interested in see how others set this up?

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

Can anyone confirm where the Outback Radian is made? Or how it would compare to the less expensive MPP units? From looking at the Outback Radian install instructions it looks as though during a power outage the only loads that can be run are those switched over to the critical loads panel...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

Wow! if it's reliable Sol-Ark will be forced to lower their exorbitant price tag! I was beginning to like the Outback Radian though. This new MPP unit seems to good to be true!? The question is how much longer will it really be to market and who wants to be the first guinea pig to see if this...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

hummm the price tag is tempting, is this one that has the charge controller integrated like the Sol-Ark? I was focusing more more on the trusted names but then if it's reliable is the main thing.

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

What about SMA? I found a guy selling the SI 6048-US-10 for $2900, with the cost of the Mate I would need for the Radian 4048 I would almost be there. SMA seems to be the favorite? but then I would have to use a transformer since it's not split-phase.

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

Thank you for this chart, it is helpful to visualize when the peak output is, and since I now plan to purchase and use the hybrid features of the Outback Radian I will be taking full advantage during those peak times. Yeah I don't think optimizers would make sense in most situations. It seems...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

What do you mean by "loopped"? Is that the same as paralleled? I can pick up some inexpensive used panels here: https://store.santansolar.com/product-category/solar-panels/ Do most newer panels have diodes built in? This is something I need to learn about, I am only familiar with optimizes...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

yeah and to be fair the box is $595, the $1000.00 is everything pre-wired, but still! Sometimes companies add some time onto the warranty if you buy the extra ad-on but I didn't see anything about that. I like that Outback seems to be willing to sell you just the components that you need...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

Ok good, yeah I think I will put together my own panel, save some $, and I can customize it the way I want. It almost seems the "Load Center" makes it more complicated. Outback publishes their install manual for the Radian which is helpful at seeing how this will go together...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

I've heard that you will actually decrease the array output if you add panels in a shaded area? After looking into it more, it seems wiring in parallel as much as possible should help minimize loss: https://diysolarforum.com/threads/parallel-wiring-solar-panels-and-shading.23164/ I think I will...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

ok, but you apparently think the Radian is reliable inverter / charger? it seems it will do what I want, I do think your right and I will want to add more panels ASAP to get to at least 2kW (my 40 Amp AIMS controller maxes out at 2600W.) Thanks for letting me know about Santan solar, they have...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

Do you currently use Radian also? I like that: "The Radian GS8048A and GS4048A feature dual AC inputs for grid/generator flexibility with no external switching required" I think this is what I have been looking for and found one on Ebay for a good price...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

Yeah I know, I hope to add more panels if we move. I checked out Santan solar as you suggested and their used panel prices are unbelievable! the optimizers that I would need would cost as much as the panels though. But I would like to make use of the 1000 Watts for now Unless I will be...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

I do have access to grid power so if I get the proper inverter/charger I can supplement power from the grid/generator, correct? Another question I have is if I have the main breaker for incoming grid power shut off so I can run off gen/inverter power (I have an interlock on my panel instead of...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

Yeah I would like to add a larger array. Your right panels are cheap now but I have partial shading issues if I install on the house so I think I would need to use optimizers, which adds a significant cost in comparison to just panels. With the sun angle this time of year in Ohio the trees are...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

I am willing to add more panels if needed. I can fit all 4, 230W panels on the shed where I was planning on setting up the battery bank and inverter. My current charge controller can handle up to 2600W of PV if I use a 48V battery bank with a maximum 192V input voltage. I can use the house...

Looking for inverter suggestion to set up a critical backup system while cutting utility bill.

I am planning on setting up a solar backup system for critical loads including at minimum enough power to run a well pump drawing 6A @ 240V plus a large chest freezer and fridge. I do not expect to have much extra power to sell back to the grid so although I like the idea a grid-tie hybrid (I...

    Sol-Ark needs a serious Change!

Sol-Ark must have got wind of it? Until it's available or something better comes out I'm thinking of going with a Magnum. I would think these low frequency inverters would by nature be more EMP resistant? I see that the Schneider Electric Conext SW 4kW 48VDC Inverter/Charger is less expensive...

    Sol-Ark needs a serious Change!

Yeah, I was on the verge of coughing up the premium for a Sol-Ark (glad I did not), but seeing their deceptive practices it just doesn't make sense and it sounds like I would need to Jerry-rig any sort of clone / equivalent inverter that is available in the US at this point in time. Plus at our...

    Sol-Ark needs a serious Change!

Well I am now leaning towards a more simple inverter (non cloud-connected) setup utilizing some of the equipment I already have: 4 x 230W, 24V panels and a 40amp AIMS Power charge controller (model: SCC40MPPT) I need to at minimum enough power to run the well pump drawing 6 running amps (not...

    Sol-Ark needs a serious Change!

You have a right to be concerned about this! If they are making a track record of doing this then what is keeping them from dumbing down future "updates" on their current hardware in the future. Then maybe start offering "subscription" services to fix it? I am skeptical considering my...

    Sol-Ark needs a serious Change!

So do you think their extra "EMP hardened" ad-on feature is fluff to capture extra $$ or is legit? It does make you wonder if this company has been deceptive about being "American Made" will they cut corners elsewhere? I don't need nearly the 12k output either but it seems that is the unit...

    Sol-Ark needs a serious Change!

I was considering a Sol-Ark and this forum caught my interest. So what I'm getting from this if Sol-Ark is not really American made or securely monitored and updated then there is no point in paying a premium for it. Then the bottom line is, what is a comparable hybrid inverter that provides...
