Replacing UPS lead acid batt w LiFePO4

It's got to do something with the internal resistance differences between LA and LFPo?

Replacing UPS lead acid batt w LiFePO4

Thanks for the fuse ratings and battery voltages! The Belkin is more like 45VA, if we use a formula based on the SUA1000XL 1000VA/800W rating. The Belkin's output is 12.4v DC, measured, as it's meant to back-up a single router that draws maybe 15 watts, so there isn't the same issue with AC...

Replacing UPS lead acid batt w LiFePO4

Wow victron makes a 48-12? I have a 40amp output 13.8 that can input a wide range of voltage. Something like 40-60v. It was perhaps $25. All potted, you've seen them online. A router and most 12v equipment will run directly from that 13.8v. No need for an inverter to 120vac then a wall wart...

Replacing UPS lead acid batt w LiFePO4

Sad, to say, there must be something internal that the Belkin does not like about LFPo. Even the 20amp/5sec battery generated a tone alarm as soon as i plugged it in. The alarm goes on, then off, then on, and switching the rear main power ON, gives the all-lights on the front, then 'On Battery'...

Replacing UPS lead acid batt w LiFePO4

Ahh... so hypothetically if I run the 1/4" spade connectors outside the UPS to a... idk 50ah LFPo, I should be fine. Because it will have a much larger BMS with a high AH C-rate draw capability. Any suggestions? https://www.amazon.com/BtrPower-Lithium-LiFePO4-Battery-Application/dp/B0C64Z96DB...

It's rated at 6. The UPS has a max load of 36 watts. But the self-test could be higher.

UPS: Belkin Battery Backup BU3DC001-12V Revision B Works fine with regular 12v/7ah LA (same dimensions as the Chins battery used by the OP) Does not work with a 'DC HOUSE' 12.8v/6ah LFPo. Even w the switch in the back set to 'OFF', the UPS is trying to interact with the battery, and emits a...

    Basic fusing question (maybe)

Yes. I cleaned up my grammar above, so it's more readable. I hear you, and wonder if putting extra panels inside a connex, with some sort of disconnect protection rated to handle that X100 blast to the panels (not the larger micronova: nothing will survive that, save being underground in a...

    Basic fusing question (maybe)

The problem is my question was one from my own broad ignorance. It is not easily answered. There is general PV to equipment protection (1), at the first level. Thank you for everyone's extremely thorough answers. For (2), those of you unfamiliar, 'Professor' Ben Davidson has written several...

    Basic fusing question (maybe)

It has occurred to me to move the innards to the conex, and have a separate set of panels non-deployed inside, to replace the fried ones on the roof.

    Basic fusing question (maybe)

Potentially, the cheaper version of that is two inline MC4 15 amp fuses? There's not more than 1 string right now.
  15. M

    Basic fusing question (maybe)

I follow Ben Davidson's Suspicious 0bservers (with a zero not an 'O'). I am working on an 1800w array that is a series of panels of two types, adding up to a working voltage of around 180v, and around 10amps {although, I have seen it produce 2200 watts at one time!}. It feeds a Growatt SPF...

    Solar panels as roof

There's a guy, who has an offgrid roof on a hill. Not a building: no walls. Just the roof, pad and supports. Built intentionally so that there is a southern facing side + an less-sloped extension off of that. Roofer didn't order enough materials, and so the western end of the roof tin simply is...

    Cheap flexible trickle charge panels

See https://www.ebay.com/itm/314574627135 or image for example (screenshot). Looking for just the panel for a reasonable price. 1) Obviously these are not 300w. Plain false advertising. Maybe 75 watt. 2) The vendors don't seem to know what they have. The additional 20amp charge controller is...

Unexpectant disadvantage converting from 12v to 48v??

I agree (see above post). This is the problem I had with the FLA's. I used those 5amp chinese balancers (they are about $18 each), 3 of them, but I couldn't find a bullet-proof option. So I split the difference and went to a 24v config, and use the milspec Sure Power. Later, with LFPo, of...

Unexpectant disadvantage converting from 12v to 48v??

Do you have some way of balancing the charge between the 12v batteries in the string? I used those chinese 5amp rated ones in a 48v, but they tend to burn up. I tried a 60amp Sure Power military surplus and put the batteries in 2x2 in a 24v config. Tap the first 12v for your loads and the Sure...

Unexpectant disadvantage converting from 12v to 48v??

Yes. One way is to slightly deform the MC-4 internal electrical connectors. That outside barrel on the female side, may not be engaging good with the male pin connector. You'll feel a definite resistance, slight but noticeable, just before the clipping of the connectors, where the barrel is...

    12v LFPo to Alternator question

I don't know why I wasn't getting any notifications on your replies. Thank you everyone who did answer with their input. The existing cabin system had a 4/0 cable running all the way back to the generator. The purpose, was, to turn over the generator, 20+ feet away, with the cabin batteries...

    Grounding growatt, generator, on vehicle.

This is offtopic. I don't know who did the work on his (identical genset to mine, same model, year etc). Start on smokstak https://www.smokstak.com/forum/forums/onan-generators.1/ and find someone (usually retired) in your area, who has competence working on the pre-Cummings Onan generators...

    Grounding growatt, generator, on vehicle.

Correct: There is an old school onboard onan. Not being used. Long ago, got a champion inverter generator from a pawn for $500. Power for it's starter battery is routed into the cabin, and the onan generator fuel pump is used to lift the fuel up. A few 2-way valves from Aircraft Spruce route...

    Grounding growatt, generator, on vehicle.

So you're saying it's an advantage to bond within the generator itself. I can put a label on the growatt as a warning to future owners, that there is a ground neutral bond in the growatt terminals on ac in so they know to disconnect it if going into a mains box.

But would you also bond the negative of the 48v LFPo to chassis/frame?

    Grounding growatt, generator, on vehicle.

Just saw this: The generator has a 30 amp TT outlet, and there is a molded male plug ending in a cut-off cord, that is then soldered on it's ends, so it's not stranded (just like using a ferrule), wired directly into the Growatt AC-IN. There is no bond between ground (i think there is an...

    12v LFPo to Alternator question

This is a vehicle-mounted system. This is strictly a question about the battery-alternator interface. TLDR: Question: Has the issue, of a high-drain (dead short) by the LFPo 12v 100ah batteries, been resolved? I.E. so the BMS restricts the charging rate to something reasonable like 20-40 amps...

    Grounding growatt, generator, on vehicle.

Ian at watts247 had me tie a jumper wire between neutral and ground, at the bus bars in the vehicle main AC panel, which is fed by the growatt, because there was no neutral-ground bond in the system at the time. Vehicle has a 3kw gasoline inverter generator, that has no neutral-ground bond...

    Growatt firmware update

That's great: you have $800 to burn and no spares. Seriously: it sucks, or it would for me, to burn an inverter. I cannot fathom taking the risk you did. May you get it running, quickly.
