    Lightning

I also watched Will's video, the truck had some neat features, but obviously isn't sorted out. I think the larger issue is the third party charging stations. It will be an issue for anyone wanting to go farther distances from home. Will had trouble finding functional charging stations...

    Power station attacks…..

Well, there's a couple possibilities. Lone wolf pissed about something, or a test. There have not been many details about the timing. If both stations were hit within a couple minutes of each other, we would know that more than one person was involved.

    Power station attacks…..

A damaged cooling system will allow more time to escape before temp monitors start triggering alarms and shutting things down. I guess if the transformer has a pressurized cooling system, a low pressure alarm would still go off pretty fast, but not like shorting the windings. Thats off line...

    Power station attacks…..

Car doors aren't made from 3/8" plate. Slugs do indeed go right through thinner stuff.

    Power station attacks…..

Yes, we were. A standard slug just mushrooms when hitting plate, much like a 22LR would. The plate might bend, but the slug will not make a hole in it. At least, that has been my experience when trying some of these things.

    Power station attacks…..

Slug would be too big in diameter and just put a dent in the case unless it was tungsten sabot dart or some other harder metal and shaped properly. 5.56 FMJ will go through 3/8 plate pretty easily, as do hollow points and soft tip rounds. Add green tips and go up to 308 or 30-06. Pretty easy...

    Power station attacks…..

I'm good as long as they don't bring down the station my grid section is fed from ;-) I think that incident knocked 10,000 people off line for a while.

    Power station attacks…..

The main issue is that there's nothing a couple of guards can do to prevent someone taking a few shots from a distance at night. Most of the sub stations around here are surrounded by trees. Those that are not, are close to populated areas, so even then returning fire would be risky. Most...

    Power station attacks…..

Local article said the windings are damaged, the transformers are not repairable. https://www.wral.com/gunfire-damage-led-to-moore-county-blackout/20612201/.

    Power station attacks…..

Agree, part of the problem is that a lot of the transformers are not Off the Shelf units, so you may not be able get another one from another utility. We may find out how long it takes to get a custom transformer ordered/delivered before this is all said and done. Current estimates are to be...

    Power station attacks…..

Yup, easy targets. Latest info is some transformers were shot at and they are trashed. Hopefully, there are replacements somewhat locally. otherwise those folks are going to be without power for a while. 60 minutes did a story many years ago about the vulnerability of the sub stations, noting...

Any recorded line worker deaths/injuries from domestic grid tie solar?

Power company pulled the meter of a place that was found to be back feeding after hurricane Fran paid a visit to North Carolina. Those folks waited a long time to get things turned back on. Pretty sure there were fines involved as well. A few folks died from carbon monoxide due to running...

    Help with emergency setup

One thing to keep in mind is portability and structural damage that may occur during a hurricane. Having a big, fixed system assumes you still have a roof, solar panels and intact electrical wiring when it's over. When Fran came through North Carolina, there were sections of town where the...

Best way to utilise a portable solar panel

Don't think of it as wasted money, consider it a spare, or you can use it with another battery to power something else after the next storm hits. MSW power is better then none at all.

Best way to utilise a portable solar panel

PSW is better for electronics. Most electronics will work on MSW, but there's no good way to tell how well it works till you try it. Some power supplies are more noisy when running on MSW, but still work. Will's budget build is just that, using absolute lowest cost components to generate...

Just bought this and need suggestions

The fridge and microwave numbers are too low and those are your main consumers. I have a 1000 Watt (cooking power) microwave and it pulls 1700 Watts when running . Check your microwave, there should be a sticker some place that will show the voltage and max expected Amp draw. Multiply those 2...

Valence U27-12XP red LED flashes every five seconds.

I had one of mine hit the LV cutoff and turned the light red. Put it on the charger and it charged fine. I had the software hooked up during the charge. I watched it for a little while, didn't see anything worrisome so went on to do other things for 40 minutes. Came back and the green light...

Interfacing with Valence built in monitoring

Sorry, didn't see the reply sooner. So it looks like it's time to get sniffing on my battery then. Or figure out the checksum... So to set up the sniffer, just need another USB/RS-485 adapter (without the power line connected) and connector for the other plug on the battery side. Fire up the...

Interfacing with Valence built in monitoring

I'm starting to mess around with the python utility script that just reports batt v and temp from battery 1. I have tried to change the ID on my battery with no luck. My battery ID is 12. I've been trying to change payloadW = [0x00,0x00,0x01,0x01,0xc0,0x74,0x0d,0x0a,0x00,0x00] and payloadV...

Well I almost burnt the house down. Time to ask for some help....

Did you change the charge parameters in the SCC for LifePO4? Might as well post what SCC you are using and what the settings were.

Grounding for a Portable Power Station?

That's exactly what I was thinking, but I would hook up the just the inverter ground lug on one end, then put a plug on the other end with just the ground conductor hooked up.

Grounding for a Portable Power Station?

I've wondered about this as well. My scenario is similar. I have an inverter with batteries to be used to power the refrigerator and some other things when the power goes out. With the power out, these devices are plugged into the inverter, not the house wiring. In this scenario, the...

Off Grid Home 1,956 ft. WITH AC!!

Have you had any issues with pollen build up on the panels during our spring here in NC? At least with ground mount, it's easy to clean the panels of needed. That Pine pollen covers everything although this year wasn't too bad.

    Discharge capacity testing

Was there one cell that dragged the voltage down or did they all discharge evenly? At some point, it will be useful to know what the system components are.
  29. M

    Discharge capacity testing

It depends on what you want to know. To understand real run time with devices that cycle, it may be better to hook up the fridge or dehumidifier, and just let it go till a cell hits 3 volts (or whatever you want to define as the lowest acceptable voltage before cutting off the loads) and see how...

Cheapest drop in lithium iron phosphate battery.

The RT series have a functional BMS on board. They were used in medical carts of various kinds. The XP series are used in much larger packs, typically delivery trucks or other commercial vehicle applications. Those need the external BMS. Have to be careful, there are low and high voltage BMS...

    Valence XP Super Thread

The laptop is just for seeing what's going on, the BMS will actually trigger the relays/contactors to cut off the loads for under/over voltage and probably can be used to control when to turn on/off chargers.

    24V LiFePO4 pack for UPS - recommendations?

Running the UPS at lower capacity will help, the question is how for how long? The inverters in the UPS units are not designed for long run times, so once you are past a few hours, it's any one's guess as to how long it will run before it over heats. Maybe you could run indefinitely with a...

    24V LiFePO4 pack for UPS - recommendations?

There's other detailed threads on this topic, in short, yes it can be done, but there are things to consider. One of the big ones is cooling of the inverter in the UPS. They are designed to run for as long as the SLA batteries that come in them can run and not much longer. Adding extra AH may...

Looking to create a home backup

If you have just moved to NC, you have yet to go through a summer in your new place. Your electric bills will go up. This winter was very mild, so I would treat the current bills as "best case" as far as power usage goes. Most homes use 240v to run the HVAC, electric stoves/ovens and Dryers...
