Just got 3 Growatt 80 amp chargers to replace failed victrons

Victron has been failure free for me, 24/7 for 1.5 years now. I hope your Growatts do what you need. Alt-E has folks on this forum, they might clarify the issue. Either way, good luck!

Test Hand Cart 3000W Near Completion

Thanks! The system remains in service, failure free… the model of “set it and forget it” consistency. The circuit breakers have a dual purpose throughout: obviously for overload/short protection, but also as convenient disconnect points should maintenance be required. The main is a 200A 48VDC...

    Crimpers-buy once; cry once

I have this crimper, have made a lot of crimps in various sizes of wire and cable, with great results. It’s a sturdy, durable unit. Not sure if it still is, but it was on Will’s recommendation pages when I purchased it about a year and a half back.

Solar Charge Controller - What current rating?

Unless money is tight, I’d up the SCC size just to allow leeway for panel configuration or addition. When I built my system, it was ~$200 additional to bump up to the top Victron unit from the one I was considering. It allowed me to test my panels in any combination and there’s room to add now...

Agree with @Rednecktek, it’s self-use from the device.

Victron SmartShunt 500A problem (blowing fuses)

I don’t see any issue in the wiring. Simply disconnect it from the shunt and see if it blows under power, and if not, it is almost certainly the shunt itself. That wire only powers the shunt data and comm operations as far as I’m aware, and draws very little In operation.

Sizing my Victron charge controllers - Help!

What are the approximate distances of these runs? It plays into whether you’d be best served by wiring for volts or amps, as a part of your system design. If you panels are relatively close, it won’t matter, but if the run to the array is a long one, you might need to opt for higher volts rather...

Sizing my Victron charge controllers - Help!

The first number in a Victron SCC is the incoming voltage limit, the second is the outgoing max charge current. Depending on your scenario, you can go multiple ways. Consider: 1. Battery capacity for charging, which can be limited in the SCC 2. Your available wire size for PV 3. Your length of...

Rookie trying to read energy label

That means you have a 300 amp hour system at 24 volts, but it comes out to the same capacity because your configuration has half the amp hour rating at twice the voltage… 3 (series pairs of 2) x 24 (volts) x 100 (amp hour per series pair) = 7200

Do you occasionally disassemble your battery bank and charge individually?

Great suggestions! Thanks, I’ll check those settings on the charger.

Do you occasionally disassemble your battery bank and charge individually?

I should re-emphasize that these are 4 BattleBorn 12V LiFeP04 batteries, and not individual cells joined to form a battery bank. They were all fully charged and balanced to the same voltage before being put into series pairs to get 24V, then paralleled with exactly matching cable lengths to...

For the best connection I solder, do you? Why not?

Agree. I haven’t used hammer crimps at all, and they’re not Will’s go-to either… just saying that you can make it work if that’s all you’ve got. The Temco crimper, on the other hand, does an awesome job on airtight, solid crimps. It’s a solid tool for the DIYer.

Do you occasionally disassemble your battery bank and charge individually?

Read through the Paralleling doc, and with my series pairs paralleled together, I’m as close as I can be to perfect. Thanks for sharing!

For the best connection I solder, do you? Why not?

I’m in the “crimp it all” camp. Good lugs and wire/cable, good crimping tool, and paying attention to fit during assembly makes for a solid mechanical connection that is trouble free. I’m not doing marine work, i should point out. There’s a whole set of standards over there that I’m not versed...

Do you occasionally disassemble your battery bank and charge individually?

That was my initial impression, as he wasn’t saying “yes, you have to do this“ but if I gain anything useful (as in worth the cost of buying a decent charger) I don’t mind. If there is no real benefit to a system humming along with no issues at all, then I sure have other projects to do!

Airstreamer looking for some advice on mounting to a curved roof

Sean and Kristy on the “Long, Long Honeymoon” site did their Airsteam here: Not that you’re wanting to spend what they did, but you might contact them for advice, or contact the vendor who did the install. Those Airstreams are an animal all their own, so a little direction might go a long way.

Do you occasionally disassemble your battery bank and charge individually?

Last year, I built a dolly type portable system with 4 BattleBorn 12V LiFeP04 batteries in 2S2P configuration for 24V. It is charged by a Victron 250|100 SCC most of the time, or a Victron 24/3000/120-70 inverter/charger if we happen to run low on available sun. It’s been running quite happily...

Solar for Coffee Pots and mini fridge

We would need to know the specs of your inverter and the capacity of your batteries to have a shot at matching them to your loads (coffee maker and mini-fridge). The inverter output capacity will tell how much it can carry, and the battery capacity will tell how long. Down the line, your solar...

Converter Hissing & Smoking: What did I do wrong?

I’ll second the suggestion you consider the Victron converters. I’ve had good luck with them. They also have a smart version, if you need specific charging profiles. Using proven brands like Victron, Bussman, Blue Sea, etc, for your parts with get you a lot closer to the safe system you’re...

Victron smartsolar 250/100 shows volts but will not charge!!

That’s always a possibility. If you can get a replacement, obviously you can test. I had my initial programming done by the vendor (BattleBorn) so I didn’t have to work from defaults. Minor adjustments are very easy, and it’s been running fault-free for over a year. It’s a beast of a SCC. If...

Victron smartsolar 250/100 shows volts but will not charge!!

I have the same SCC, running at 24 volts, and it is wired as yours shows in your pics. As long as your cabling is good, I don’t think it’s a connection issue. I don’t know why it’s giving the BMS warning, as your BMS isn’t connected to the SCC. I can’t see exactly what your battery settings...

Victron Multiplus 24/3000 cutting out at 750W

#3 is a very, very smart move. They can likely point you to the needed PC drivers, as well. I recently watched a video where the owner of an Airstream added a soft start to his AC and the lowered start up load allowed him to run his from a small generator. I imagine the load reduction effect...

Victron Multiplus 24/3000 cutting out at 750W

The Multiplus 24/3000 is not a Bluetooth device, so either the MK 3 USB or BT dongle is required to program it. This unit’s default settings are programmed so that it runs from shore power first if it is available, switches to batteries (like a ups) automatically when shore power fails or is...

Test Hand Cart 3000W Near Completion

Now one year in service, and no issues at all. Victron, BattleBorn, Cooper/Bussman and Blue Sea Systems equipment has been bulletproof. PV still outputting well, occasionally over full rating in good sun. I‘ve been considering converting a van for travel when my wife retires… this system might...

    So this happened today

After reading this whole thread, I’m left hoping the builder will give us more details but have a feeling he might not even recall all the details of the build. The fire could have been anything, even conductors or other components. All we really know is something hot made contact with something...

Victron inverter as shore power conditioner?

I have that unit. As stated, it isn’t a power regulator in the sense that it won’t ramp up weak shore power to a higher level absent battery backup. It does have several UPS-like functions that will use the batteries to boost shore power to a specified level, within the scope of its range. It’s...

What to use to see actual battery power available. Clearly charge controller not an indicator

Based on the settings you enter, the BMV-712 will sync at 100% charge and base SOC from use vs capacity. You can also see voltage, which can give you some idea as a double-check. The monitor re-syncs at each 100% charge capacity it senses, and will show time since last sync, and number of...

    New to vanlife

BattleBorn does a good job of getting components programmed to work together. Support is good on questions, as well. They can also help you “future-proof” your system if you let them know any future loads you plan to add. They’re a solid company.
