104% Tariff Just Announced On Chinese Imports..

So sad. It seemed like such a simple and relevant thread at first; new US tariffs on solar equipment, most of which is made in China: a subject near and dear to the hearts of this community.
But here we are 500 posts in and it's devolved into a heated debate into whether or not the creator of said tariffs knows what he's doing.
A sign of the times, perhaps.

It's a tariff, on solar panels. There is only so much to be said about the tariffs themselves. We have no long term data on these specific tariffs yet to discuss.. and with them changing near daily, we never will. Considering the cult of personality surrounding the person putting the tariffs in place, he is bound to be relevant to the discussion. It's not like he's taking a super hands off approach to them, he is discussing them almost everyday in his trademark style.

I have been saying I am all for Tarrifs, from 3 years ago.
My issue is that Trump is doing it without a Plan, so no one knows what to do.
Had he just straight up said 100% Tariffs on Chinese goods you would have by now seen companies breaking ground on New Factories in Asia, Mexico and the USA.
As it stands no one is doing anything because he might wake up tomorrow and change his mind again.

Easy. Just keep doing what Biden was doing. The economy performed objectively better under him.
In my opinion would say in conjunction with Trump (first term) and Biden had started.
He (Biden) was addressing this issue(s) with China in his style and had propionates on both sides of the isle in Washington as this new version of Trump this term is trying to do to.
This article is not biased (that I can tell) and has a lot of good information on the subject. Biben Trump China

Agricultural subsidies.
That's a good start.
Just how much money do you throw at Corn subsidies to make ethanol that you see to burn as fuel?
You have whole industries that are sacred cows.
So you cant just say its other people
Didn't mean to single out other people or any one group which you obviously agree with. What I meant to get across is that anyone receiving a pass on these tariffs (and yes there are far too many) should be immediately exposed to just as much competitive pressure here at home for the pass...and we should all be allowed to speak openly with our senators/representatives in wide-ranging forums regarding exactly how this might be accomplished. on a level playing field.
We can't allow glaring market issues such as Big Farm or Big Pharma for that matter to slink away unquestioned while even larger subsidies for manufacturing of all sorts gets the same pass.
We either talk about these monopolistic issues out in the open and with these lawmakers/business owners present or we fail in the end.

Im pretty sure that one won't deliver 5400W for 5 seconds, which one did you get?

You definitely don't want to get a Midnite if you are just looking for cheapest $ per watt on a spec sheet from China.

I don't need anywhere near 5.4kW. My practice, with cheap Chinese crap, is to use them to about half of their stated specs. Two-thirds, at the most. Cheap Chinese crap appears to have little to no design margin. In my experience, they typically don't even meet their stated specs.

I bought the cheap Chinese crap AIO inverter for $369. I'm not using it for anything mission critical.

thats what I was describing in my earlier post about ethanol. the E85 i have is in a sealed steel drum, but it has been sitting for over 10 years, so for me its just firestarter at this point, even being sealed.
Try some of this.
Use it to flush pump gasoline from your small engines....

Its 95 octane 5 years shelf stable after you open the can and contains no solvents that eat rubber.

And CLEAN!!
try that with pump gas or even Coleman fuel in a house...

Hopefully he'll be doing bunker reviews by then and have lots of left over ones to spot us. I don't mind getting my own free leftover Will bunker, but I don't want to share with some of you people.
First we need to figure out how to get into those Bunkers the the roaches are using....

Want to make an offer on a commercial property that has the potential for A LOT of solar. Of course, cost of the solar install will make a difference on whether it all works out.

If you can afford commercial property with the potential for a LOT of solar, your going to do the math for the ROI. If that means you wait 12 months, you wait 12 months. China currently makes most of this stuff, but you make it worthwhile, and other countries including our own will do it. Further if the cost of other fuels, or perhaps Nuclear plant regulations permit, the hard press for solar, even at a lower price point will diminish. Sadly we have not done much more of the latter, but if we had nukes pushing power at 0.05/kwh, everywhere nobody would be buying solar. I find it interesting, all the 'clean' energy lobbying and propaganda basically pushing products primarily made in China, while at the same time is restricting the same here in the US. Odd really.

I agree but there is very little desire form the general public to hold politicians feet to the fire and change this situation.
The desire is definitely not there in any visible form which must give comfort to our enemies for certain. What shocks me is not any lack of willingness to sacrifice for the good of community or country anymore...it is as you say: Not even a desire to become educated regarding the effect of local/worldwide events...let alone simply walk down the street to talk to anyone else about collective prosperity let alone survival.
It also does not help that a good share of younger people have no idea as to where we are right now in the history of even the last 125 years or so let alone last week, month or year.
These tariffs are the least of our worries in the big picture.
We need sub-Depression level sacrifices from everyone (yesterday) to even have a chance of digging ourselves out of this one.
