104% Tariff Just Announced On Chinese Imports..

Am I Missing Something. It seems like thousands of small businesses will go under without Chinese parts if this continues.

How are companies like Signature Solar, Current Connected & Inverterrus going to survive if they loose 90% of their inventory for several months?

If they pay the Tariffs then prices go way up so sales plummet. If they don't pay the tariff then they don't have inventory. If they pay the tariff and tariffs go back down then they are stuck with overpaid inventory.

What about Car Parts, Mechanics, Medicines (90%), Appliances, Plumbers . . . .

I just don't understand how so many people are talking how great this is and how tough Trump is.

I keep hearing how this will destroy China. How? It seems they could just offer a discount to the rest of the world to offset some export losses to the US.

Enlighten Me with your Genius.
Easy, China pays for the tariffs!!

It’s been said over and over again and again, it must be true right?

Uh.. That is not the point. Trump has a gun pointed to your head and you keep screaming, "I dare you to pull the trigger. You ain't man enough." Like it or not doing things to make the situation worse ends up making the situation worse. Perhaps work things out for now. If you ain't dead the future can give you opportunities.
Trump has a gun pointed at your head, and you have in your hand a deadman switch connected to 100lbs of C4. Neither wins. And pointing a gun at someone's head and being a bully does not make ANYONE a good negotiator, it simply makes you a MOB boss and/or a bully.

Lots of countries jack the prices of our goods up via tariffs, I think it would be in our benefit to not only sell to china without tariffs, but to sell to everyone without tariffs. We're not charging tariffs to anyone, why should htey get away with charging us?
Tariffs are just one small part of the problem.
That is exactly what the US told Vietnam 2 days ago when Vietnam offered to eliminate their Tarrifs. The US refused the offer and said there are bigger problems that need to be fixed.
The bigger problem we have is Copyright infringement and other Governments subsidizing their local companies in order for them to under cut US companies and eliminate them.

I'm just a really small Designer / Manufacturer. Would like to see some comments from the larger retailers and suppliers.

Other than antipathy towards Trump there really is no reason to think that the USA would back away from a reasonable deal.

What was the Chinese curse? "May you live in interesting times."

Better than the Arab curse of, "May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your beard."
The administrations definition of reasonable is do what I want or else, it has little to do with what is reasonable.
Not if there is no belief the US will honor any negotiated deal. We've gone full Darth Vader "I'm altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further."

Trump has a history of agreeing to a deal and then deciding he does not need to pay you. He knows that you would eventually win in court if you had deep enough pockets to pay for the lawyers, but he also knows you cannot afford to pay for the lawyers since he will do everything possible to delay/appeal the case forever and run the price up.

FatJay posted a video in "Traff Wars" thread of Kevin Oleary on the news telling everyone exactly how he feels and why this is needed.

So you advocate escalation? Yes there are some parallels between a leader of a country and a Mob Boss or Bully. I don't know about you but when the Godfather asks me to do something I jump on it.

I, too, jump. All the while plotting how to screw him as hard as possible and get out of being beholden. It is a toxic relationship and no way I will willingly be anyone's bitch -- no matter how good the deal seems.

CNN news flash, Trump has announced 90 day pause in Tariffs. The world to 10% China to 125%. Dow up 2300 points.
Confusion reins.

I don't advocate escalation, except that no one is giving the other sides ANY reasonable way out. The only way out involves the standard mafia move of you give me 51% of your business, and that is not an option. So escalation/chicken until someone blinks.

They have an easy way out. Trump is only doing this in response to other countries tariffs.

You charge us, but we don't charge you.
Trump says if you charge us, we will charge you, too.
If you don't want us to charge you, you need to stop charging us.

Trump doesn't want tariffs, trump is only using tariffs to get other countries to stop charging us tariffs.

Except he doesn’t seem to understand the difference between a tariff and trade deficit, kinda hard to negotiate with someone when they don’t have a grasp on the basics.

Trade will find a way. China has been doing things, that for any other name was a tariff. If China holds out long enough, other nations will pickup the void. It won’t be immediate, but it will happen.

Agreed I’m sick of Lethos and Heard Island and McDonald screwing us Americans!!

Didn’t you see that formula? It had Greek letters!

I'm far from a Trump fan, but the single thing I've been on board with is his tough stance against China. The problem is that the way he goes about implementing changes is completely opaque and slapdash. If China is the problem, why is he penalizing our allies as well? They're all at risk from Chinese industrial policy and rampant overproduction as well, so why not partner up with them to take on China's aggressive industrial subsidies?

The Trans Pacific Partnership was an attempt to draw other Asian countries closer to the U.S. orbit so that they would have an alternative to China. He torpedoed that, now he's going after our North American neighbors, as well as our allies across the lake. All this while genuflecting to the autocratic regime in Moscow. I can't make it make sense. And I'm certain that no one else that took college level economics can either.

No one can make long-term investment decisions with this administration. If you were going to spend money to ramp up U.S. production, this pause is a rug pull. If you were going to continue importing and pass the costs of the tariffs on, you have no idea what you're going to pay or how much of the cost increase you'll need to absorb. This isn't rational policy making...it's something more akin to gambling. Business investment is going to decline substantially in the absence of stable trade policy.

Reminds me of covid times. "When in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout".

I prefer to watch. No panic buying, no freaking out. No watching the newspeople run out of breath trying to whip up views.

We export a lot of Food to China. They just put an 84% Tariff on that.
We can do without a new iPhone or TV but Chinese people cannot avoid the Increased prices on food.

I also suspect that with less Agricultural purchases from US Farmers by China that the Farmers will start dumping that food at lower costs into the USA. So we might actually see prices of produce go down in the short term.
Yep China can't feed themselves.
They have been buying US farmland for years because of this.

Yep. A major issue and Xi knows it. In 2021, Brazil replaced the United States as China’s largest agricultural supplier, providing 20 percent of China’s agricultural imports. It is also one of the main drivers in their Belt and Road initiative.

Same situation with energy, but unlike food where they're constrained by geography and climate, energy self-sufficiency is what is driving their moves into solar, wind, and hydro. They're certainly pivoting away from the US as being an energy supplier, and that will hurt our producers by curtailing their markets. This hits home for me as WV owes 2% of the State GDP solely to exports of coal to China. Not sure where else we can pivot to, though personally I'm fine if it all just stays in the ground.

The collapse of China and the global shift in energy to electrification and solar has been apparent for some time now. This just turbo charges everything. I placed all my orders for everything on Monday, so now am just watching for tracking numbers.
