Well, they have been screwing us for years. Thankfully, that's finally coming to an end.
But, there's no need to panic. It'll all work out.
And yes, I definitely expect that we will come out on top, once the dust settles.
No, they haven't been screwing us for years. They have been a reliable trading partner for decades and have been quite stable. There have been some issues, sure, but you deal with them through the WTO, not unilaterally.
The sort of juvenile, uninformed, reckless tariffs Trump imposed has destroyed a reputation we have built up for 80 years of being the most reliable and stable trading partner in the world. Now that is gone for decades at the very least, maybe for good. Businesses across the US have already begun suffering from this nonsense as their trading partners in other countries have canceled contracts and found other suppliers. Those contracts are not coming back.
World trade is going to route around the US and we will become far less relevant since we have ceded our leadership in trade and foreign policy. The EU and China are already stepping in to fill the void.
It's far easier to destroy than than it is to create and this is nothing but destructive. Factories aren't going to magically appear in the US overnight to start manufacturing here and even if that magic trick could happen, you're not going to find Americans clamoring to work in textile mills or iPhone factories for a few bucks an hour. Just like Americans are not clamoring to work the jobs we use immigrants for like farming, construction and domestic work.
Let's look at the senior trade advisor who has been pushing these tariffs. That's Peter Navarro. You know how he got that job? He wrote of bunch of whack job economics books that didn't sell very well and was generally considered a crackpot. But he did quote an alleged actual economist "Ron Vara" in all of his books, supporting his wacky ideas. In 2016 Jared Kushner needed to find an economic advisor for the first Trump administration. So Jared, being the incompetent he is, went to Amazon to look for economic books and
based on the book covers alone, he decided Peter Navarro was exactly the guy they needed. Well, it turns out that Ron Vara guy Navarro kept quoting in his books was not a real person, but a fictional persona whose name is an anagram of Navarro.
This is why you should never put criminals, failsons, habitual grifters and weirdos in charge. They will screw it up every time.
Idiocracy is truly here. It's maddening watching people who don't know anything about politics, government, geopolitics, global trade or economics applaud the downfall of American leadership and dominance in the world thinking it's actually some savvy negotiation from the biggest business failure this country has ever seen.
