I'm trying to find a compact transfer switch that can handle 240 volts split phase with a minimum amp rating of 20 amps. I've called Schneider and Eaton, but they're offerings are either too expensive or too large. The load will only be about 15 amps. Does anyone have any recommendations for compact transfer switch that meets these requirements? Two pole is fine so long as there's a neutral bar in the Box. This unit should be an on-off-on type.

The purpose of this transfer switch is to allow me to change the power source for my hot water heater from grid power to power from my solar system. I have more than enough power in the spring summer and fall to run the hot water heater from my solar system, but in winter time I simply won't have enough production.

for the reasons like you said to be able to change usage as seasons change
the inverter is now gen and the gen feeds into inverter if ever needed

this was during install and testing , have wire clean up to do
i got the second transfer used on ebay for 120 bucks

This looks great, I'm probably going to get this and a box to put it in. Any problem with putting solid #10 copper under the screws? I can't tell if it has a plate to grab the conductor with, under the screw, do you know?

You should put crimp lugs on the wires. The six screw for the switch are not very long and go into threaded bushings on back of switch. If I remember correctly, they are #8 screws. Pretty beefy toggle switch. Much stronger than rocker switches.

This is the manufacturers answers to my questions:

Thank you for contacting NKK Switches, please see the answers to your questions below.
1. Can this switch be actuated under load, or must the loads be off before switched?

  • Yes but not exceed the switch rating.
2. Is it acceptable to put number 10 solid copper conductors under the screw terminals for connection?
3. Is there a grabber plate underneath the screw that would more securely hold the conductor?
Answer for 2 & 3 : It is possible to use 10 Gauge solid core wire under the screw, but we do not recommend doing that. We recommend using a O Shaped screw terminal connector as the one shown below, also there is no grabber plate underneath the screw to help secure a wire. This is again why we recommend the O Scaped terminal connector.
