America's melting pot

thinking if you buy a premade battery box $545 😳 it makes the chin/DC house price look sweet

me I'm thinking cheap o_O and thinking cell count.

These are all I use, unfortunately they show unavailable; glad I have an extra pack.

Then the thick cutting boards from Sam's club on the ends and a couple lashing straps. The most recent packs I ran some strut scraps between the straps and thick cutting boards for the heck of it.
I cut the boards ~1/8" wider than the cells to keep the straps off the edges.

42OhmsPA, is it a optical allusion in your image, but the bottom cells look bigger then the top
like the top shelf are 100Ah and bottom are 280Ah

agtcovert, 71Kwh is more spiritual, kind of like the holy grail

I've spent the summer building batteries, but only managed 19kwh at 24v
and while I may lust after 48kwh/71kwh, there's no way I could even maintain it
but you really don't need to pass that around 🤫

Tommy that 19k of battery is a lot ... if I build another big battery will be around 28k-30k. That will be extreme over kill for emergency setup.

TOMMY how is your split phase inverter holding up?

split phase inverter holding up?
D71, it can't run my AC or electric dryer  trips out inverter
before spring I'll have a 10kw split phase running.
the 5kw can run everything else I have.(it has been running none stop :giggle:)

I'm just completing my last Li-ion battery pack for my snow shovel, next is 300Ah(8S) 24V pack of prismatic
lifepo4 cells.(link from 42OhmsPA) in 2 weeks.

because I have 12-24V packs in parallel, I'm thinking the stock cell bus bar should work for me

the sun is not play fair this season, I'll have to look at updating my generator charging equipment soon
my generator outputs 240V so I hope to use my AIO's 30A charging with my current 25A charger(I hope)
50A should make it possible to maintain the packs I have this winter with minimal sun

agtcovert, is it possible to give us a peek inside one of your battery packs ? 🫣 crap, now I'm a peeping tom
Sure. First pic is before I had the cases and just custom built on a shelf to get going. Others are from when I got a case.

All my cells get their initial delivery voltage checked and written on them. I also (I don't think visible) print a label along the lines of YEAR/BATT-NUMBER-CELL NUMBER so: 24/00-01 (2024, Battery 0, Cell 1). My next battery would be 25/06-xx depending on if/when I add cells.

The cases/cells are all from Docan, worked with Jenny Wu. Nothing but good things to say. 16 REPT 280Ah cells, 64 EVE 280 Ah cells.

It's cheaper not to have cases (potentially) but I wanted each pack to have a cover.

agtcovert, how many watts of panels do you have to maintain that size pack ?
Not enough. I started using the system about 2 months ago, it was built (by me) around August/September. I have 1 8s2p set of 325Wp panels, a 9s string of 325Wp, and 6s2p 250Wp. I still need to get some proper mounts for some of them, so they're not optimal and need to be changed to be more effective. But it's 14F here this morning, so...probably not this week.

I just placed an order for 31 405Wp I'll install next year. That should get me closer. I'm hedging on prices going up, so I'll store those panels until spring, after checking for shipping issues.

I currently offset with solar and charge when it's cheap and then run on battery all day. I usually hit charge time with 40-50% capacity. Still saving some money for me, but next year should get me a lot closer to where I want to be.

how much did all those cutting boards and extra plastic run you, (for each 280 or 305 packs)?

I'm using the cutting boards, frugal fucker I am...
The thick boards from Sam's Club are 15" x20" by ~1/2" and cost $9 each.
The flexible boards are 15" x 12" and are 17 bucks for a 10 pack, 1 pack does one 16S bank with some left over.
That's what I'm using on the 230Ah and 305Ah packs, the 280s came with the yellow epoxy boards; Docan includes them now.

It's all part of the case kit. Each case has the hardware, PCBs, bus bars, BMS, etc. Each case was around $600 shipped.

Hopefully answering what you're asking.
I was trying to ballpark what a diy pack of my Winston’s cost against what it costs to safely diy the aluminum cases cells. With Winston’s none of that is needed as they are nylon cased

42OhmsPA, I talked out of turn, you corrected ken about the cutting boards, while I was typing
letting him know it was your battery build that used them not agtcovert's

but I'd like to ask ken what make the winston batteries worth what seems like a premium price ? other then the hard case.
ken do you have images of your battery build that you could share ?

Tommy how much does one of your home built 24 volt battery packs cost and are you running a bms on them?

Your home made batteries scare the shit out of me due to their chemistry. You’ve made it a long time to go up in lithium explosion - fire ball. Is there a bms on these?

How much does a home brewed pack like that cost?

i thought my battery pack photos were in my build thread, but on a quick look they got lost in the reshuffle of my threads when the Admins helped me consolidate them. got to dig around to find more but here are a few

these are not finished photos these are mockup heating pads compression rig etc. finished product is just a XPS box with batter bms and all sealed shut to preserve heat in the winter... remove the top in the spring and shut off heaters.
