I am installing my first solar set up. I have electrical wiring experience but this is my first solar. I have space in my office/man cave but worry about fire and to a lesser extent noise. Local installers seem to be OK with in house or in garage installation but I have read some horror stories about batteries in particular.
What do experienced installers think about the practice of installing solar equipment in a house or building?
I would really appreciate advice.

Inverters and batteries are happiest in the same environment as humans.
My system is 20' from where I sleep.
Mistakes and mishaps can cause an electrical fire. Doesn't matter if it's an inverter or microwave.

For me, if I was buying batteries that are UL listed, I wouldn't hesitate to put them in a living space.

Noise wise, that depends on the inverter. Once you've settled on an inverter, ask here if the "spec sheet" is accurate for the noise level.
There is probably someone with that inverter with first hand knowledge.

I would keep it outside. My first system which powers my man cave, is in said man cave and it's a solid concrete building (0 wood except furniture). It is a smaller 24V system with 15kWh battery and 3kW pv.

My 2nd system is to power an entire house. I built a dedicated shed for it.

I did not realize how much heat the AIO generates. My shed is only 7x2 ft. I should have made it bigger. Learn from my mistake. I have a window AC and a fan in it.

thanks for the information

Check what is legal and required where you are....

Some places are OK with having them in 'habitable dwellings', others totally NOT ok at all, all depends on whatever is the rules where you are....

(Note that UL listing is really of zero importance outside the US, most countries it doesn't mean didlysquat...)
