Hello folks, I am looking if there are some packs that are considered more desirable then others.
Your reasoning would be helpful.
I want to replace my small 10 kw store bought battery and build something above 50 kw and I am doing some research.

check out the DIY Electric Vehicle forums as well.
I have just 2.5 kWh battery. 200 Ah, 12V.
What voltage do you need?

Most ev packs are annoingly bad match for 48v system.
16S or 2x8S is too high in voltage for most 48 inverters.
12S voltage drops too low for most inverters.

You’d want 13S or 14S pack, 15S would possibly also work.

Recent tesla packs are probably worst as they are filled to the brim with glue/potting compound.

Korean (kia, hyndai) packs seem to be hackable to 7S, wolkswagen packs depend on manufacturer if they are possible to peel open.
BMW i3 packs seem super friendly for reconfiquration to any voltage(bolted busbars)
IIRC Some volvo packs are 3S, combining 5 of them would make 15S pack

how is 16s bad for inverters?
aren't most 48V DIY batteries 16s?
Most EVs don't use LFP, they use NCA/NCM/etc that have a higher cell voltage.

That being said, given the amount of work needed to make an EV pack work, and the risks associated with cobalt lithium packs, I cannot think of a reason to not just do DIY LFP packs unless you got an EV pack for peanuts and had a good place outside the house to keep it.

yes it seems some people love the EV packs. Did not know that they weren't LiFePO4. I think chemistries vary by manufacturer, yes?

They vary a bit, but the vast majority of EV packs are lithium cobalt something or other due to higher energy density and a little less weight. I think some Teslas are using LFP now, but not sure which ones.

AFAIK, the Stellantis 50kwh battery is NOT LFP!
Where did you get this list from? ChatGpt?
Anyways, Stellantis makes Jeep, Peugeot, Citroen and Opel EVs.

As a previous owner of an Opel Corsa-e (EV), I can tell you for sure it's not LFP. I think that they use the same 50kwh battery in thier other models too.

As for BYD, the 60 kwh battery is certainly LFP. But it comes in 126s1p form factor, using "blade" LFP cells (prismatic, but thin and very long). There are no "modules" in the BYD Blade LFP battery.
So while technically you can separate the cells, 126 doesn't divide equally to 16s or 15s packs, so you will waste some cells.

Here is my tale of repurposing a NMC battery from a Peugot 208e. All works fine 50Kwhr battery for £2000 brand new, has driven 1000 miles.

Victron Multi 48V can be set for voltage down to 38V so the 6s2p modules give a volt range of 40 to 50 VDC and need no messing with . Lovely modules with onboard controller so no need for 216 crocodile clips and loose wires all over the plaqce.

1) Kia Niro. Every cell is 60Ah. Most builds are 3p x whatever you need in series. More on expensive side
2) Nissan Leaf. 2p2s modules, simple to build, heavy, expensive.
3) Hyunday Ioniq 5 modules 6s (2p6s internally). Light, small, good price. Make sure you get balancing leads and they are not broken on module. Victron Multiplus II 48 works with these without a glitch ( 2 modules - 12s )

To add, Multiplus can also work up to 66V, so can work with 16S NMC battery if cells are charge to less than 4.1V/cell.

I don't think Tesla Model 3 2019-2022 is LFP. I have a 2022 and it is not.
There is at least 3 different battery in those tesla.
Long range NMC
Standard range NMC
Standard range LFP

So, it's entirely possible that you don't have LFP battery in your Tesla 3, but LFP battery for Tesla 3 exist.
