Bluetooth Shunt or Bluetooth BMS or both?

Hi everyone, just joined the forum and this is my first post. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Haven’t built a battery before but I’m leaning towards the 3.2V DIY option for my battery bank (24V, 280 Ah 8S). I’m looking at the Victron Energy shunt w Bluetooth connection, so I can monitor the batteries, but I see that a lot of BMS’s have Bluetooth as well. Do I need the shunt if the BMS has this feature? Does it give me anything more than what I’d have w the BMS in terms of monitoring from my phone?

Thanks!

I think the BMS’s are only working back they capacity from voltage , rather than a shunt which looks at then energy leaving and being pushed into the battery.

I think of it as BMS gives an indication , a shunt will provide a true indication of capacity

The Victron SmartShunt will give you battery level coulomb counting and voltage and includes a nice Bluetooth App.

Your BMS will give you cell level voltage and if/when balancing is occurring if that is part of it’s function.

Two different things. Either, both or neither can be Bluetooth.
