Will a cable thickness of 10 mm2 (8 awg) be sufficient to connect the panel (combination box) and the inverter at a distance of 10 meters? I have 8 285 watt panels, connected in 4 series giving 38 amps and 78 volts. The inverter is 24v.

You can plug those numbers in a calculator, like this one:

For your numbers, I get a voltage drop of 2.17% (1.69V), which is ok - you want to stay below 3%.

I got this thick aluminum cable. Can I use it to connect the panel and inverter (schematic above) at a distance of 12 meters?
(measurements in the photo are in centimeters)

Can I put that cable directly into the ground? or do I need some kind of cable protection pipe?
