8 years ago when I had my solar set up I used a Miller Bobcat 250 as my backup generator using the Conext AGS module on my XW 6048 Xantrex Inverter/Charger. Not only did they not really wire it right (it blows a fuse every time it shuts down) but it's been a pain because I can't fully automate the system as the Miller is gasoline and needs chocking to start in the winter.

I've had a Champion Power generator Model 100165 sitting around doing nothing for ages and since it is dual fuel I want to switch it into the system for full automation. It's plenty large enough to handle the 5Kw load at start of charge. Any clues on how to do this. Meaning what wires go where to start and stop the unit.

Do you have the manual for the Conext AGS? It looks like there's detailed wiring info in it. I'm not sure if this is your specific AGS but it may be a start:

Thanks. I have the quick-start guide the installers used to hook it up originally. I'm not sure why I had not bothered to download this. I can figure the harness side of the Conext unit I'm just not sure what to hook it up to on the Gen-set side.

I've wired a Champion #100891 to an Atkinson AGS module. It's been operating independently on AGS mode for about a year. Atkinson is a terrific supplier AND they provide wiring diagrams for a few hundred generators. If for some reason your AGS fails I'd recommend Atkinson as a possible source for a replacement.

They do provide a wiring diagram for your model #100165 a few dozen pages into this massive .pdf of wiring diagrams:
  • Of particular interest in this drawing is the lower left that shows the Champion starter switch panel with functions and wire colors
  • They call for three relays to make needed connections if a user isn't present to switch the power on and depress the start switch. These three relays are in addition to the two relays - K1 and K2 - in the AGS module.
  • The Digital Timer in this drawing appears to be the auto-start trigger. My guess is that your Xantrex provides this function. Atkinson makes these drawings based on specific customer needs, hence the digital timer for this customer.

Are you planning to run the generator on propane? That can work great (mine is hooked up to a 500 gallon propane tank). You'll want to ensure that your generator has a fail-safe propane valve. While the regulator cuts off propane flow it's not intended to be a failsafe on/off valve. On my generator model there is a manual valve that cuts off propane and switches the generator off. Since I'm not around to manually open the valve I added a separate servo operated valve connected to the fuel solenoid operation (the fuel solenoid is in the carb to prevent backfiring).

It's remarkable how many different wiring scenarios even Champion has for these generators so it's not necessarily a single solution.
