Just built a 12 volt battery with 4 3.2 v cells for 280 ah.
I plan first running from the solar panels thru my solar charge controller then to the BMS 4s. My question is: If the battery doesn't keep up with the load can I charge the battery with a lead acid charger? Do I need to disconnect the BMS first?

yes. Provided it charges at 14.6V or less.

No. You never disconnect the BMS when charging/discharging the battery. It's there to protect the cells.

I hope you plan to use the Top Balancing Guide in the Resources section. It's a great way to learn, and it might save you from destroying your battery.

Yes about any charger will work in a pinch. ALL charging should run through the BMS always. No exceptions.
If the BMS trips off to protect the battery... get a new charger with correct specifications.
