CHINA kills all non Sol-Ark branded DEYE unit in the USA this morning.

How Many Members will Disconnect their inverters, no matter what brand, from the net today, As a precaution...?
Mine were never connected from day 1.

I wonder if the folks at Solar Assistant could help with this issue, I'd think they have a pretty great understanding of how the Deye ticks.

I don't think Deye thought this though. They have basically tanked their sales in the America's. I for one would never buy a Deye sourced product ever. Any company who would engage in cyber terrorism has broken all trust with any potential customer no matter were they live. The crony capitalism of some members of this site not withstanding, just shows what Deye is capable of.
In communist china, there is no such a concept of trust, only money.
Knowing this remote shutdown attack, who will ever trust Deye/SolArk inverters with super strong EMP protection?

They might not have built it in originally. If the dongle is connected, I assume it can update some parts (if not all parts) of the software without user intervention.
Yes. I had Sol-Ark log in to my system. She was able to restore the "SHARE" function that I no longer had access to. SHARE was lost when switching from PowerView to MySolArk. BTW, Sol-Ark now hosts on US servers; the reason why the App changed.

What about the ones that didn't use an installer?
It could be resolved really quickly, just reverse the kill command or give out the code / how to create the code it's based on serial number.

It never should have happened in the first place, hell even windows doesn't lock out computers they just pester with annoying messages.

De you have your solark WiFi dongle connected?
If they didn’t use an installer then where did they get their units from?
Do you use online banking?
Do you have a smart phone?
Do you keep all your money under a mattress?
Do you use social media?
Are you connected to the grid?
I think there a lot bigger concerns in life than having an inverter connected to the internet unless it is an illegally imported gray market unit.
I doubt if the Chinese wanted to start some sort of cyberwar that inverters would be their first line of attack! The grid would be a more likely one, or banking or airline traffic control etc.

I put some thoughts on this IoT-ization in a previous thread. Do not put critical infrastructure on the internet. Full-stop. Just don't do it.

If you need a firmware upgrade, you can figure out other ways to do it.

I have a Schneider Insight Facility -- it's on a completely air-gapped network. I can get to it from within my house and that's it. No way that's going on the internet.

Some day I might, might, put it on a VLAN and have a firewall than can bridge the networks internally for VPN access... but there's no way that device is getting any of its own internet access.

This is the complete wrong way of thinking about it.

Its about risk/reward and controls. Online banking has dozens of laws and regulations to protect the consumer.

Import inverters... well, do you have the financial resources to sue Deye?

In Puerto Rico? That's easy, baba.
Hell I almost imported one but didn't want to deal with freight forwarders.
I imported my current AIOs and installed them myself.
Do you use online banking?
Yes.
Do you have a smart phone?
Using it now.
Do you keep all your money under a mattress?
Nope, none actually. That's a terrible spot for it.
Do you use social media?
Does the forum count?
Are you connected to the grid?
Technically yes, a 3000W power rectifier is the only device connected.

Me too.
unless it is an illegally imported gray market unit.
Can you provide evidence and proof it's illegal?

Not sure on that one. Vulnerability testing...

Look, here's the reality of internet connected devices... from someone who's been in the Cloud/IoT industry over a decade...

Companies suck at cyber security. It's an afterthought and its intentional because its a huge cost driver and the ROI is low... especially for short lifespan products...

It started in the automotive industry many decades ago with "planned obsolescence".

No company wants to support legacy stuff... they want you to buy the latest and greatest.... and sell you recurring XaaS on a monthly.

Just look at what BMW is doing with heated seats-as-a-service and that crap.

There's a whole lot of articles on "enshitification"... and this kind of remote-brickage is on the list.

The only way this will change is with super-strong consumer protection laws... and we won't get that in the US with the incoming administration... its not "business friendly."

Too !
LOL
When I was searching for an upgrade to the MPP's I considered an EU based Deye (230v) and transformer set up. and considered the trade-off was lower cost but on my own for support. Decided to go a different way, glad I did now.

Wow this thread blew up *so* fast. Did anyone confirm that this is showing up on their screens in the USA (lower 48) on either a sol-ark labeled device or a knock-off Deye device or any other Deye made brands like Lion Energy, etc.?

Since everything comes from China, this should be a wakeup call for everyone.
My system has never been connected to the internet.
My system is isloated and can only ''talk" to my house next door via LAN - no internet access - (so I can adjust settings in Solar Assistant).
But this type of thing makes me wonder about connectivity in general.
I hope my use of relays and smart plugs limits my exposure to bad actors. If they want to brick a smart plug, it is easy enough to remove it, or buy another brand.

Deye probably couldn't attack any knock-off, unless someone tried to connect it to their servers.
There have been at least one member reported in the USA. Mostly it appears to have been an attack on the PR Deye owners.
