I just like looking at other people's systems.
Not at all interested in the politics or drama.

Attack"Attach him?"
That’s something I keep in mind for mine. My mother and grandparents are easily intimidated by technology and unwilling to learn. Even simple controls and basic interfaces confuse them. Not that they can’t, they won’t. It’s frustrating so I have to design it as simple as possible and automatic.Bad idea! His poor wife must be terrified!
If anything ever happened to him (or even if he just gets the flu for a week) she'd have to take over and there's a lot of moving parts.
Mebbe I'm just a minimalist at heart but life woulda been so much simpler if they'd just stayed in Kelowna.
And I don't get how he's free when his family is totally dependent on this overly-complicated Rube Goldberg system. Sure it's a fun hobby and keeps him busy and gives him lots to talk about but Sheesh! There are limits!

But only if they are willing/capable of understanding it will it make their lives better.Automation is better for everyone involved.
I recently got a few smart plugs and lights to play with as a new hobby to see what all the fuss is about.Automation is better for everyone involved.
Watching Linus (LTT) on YouTube has convinced me to use very little home automation. KISS. I know how to use a light switch and it usually works.
Sporadic and limited use? sure. Bolting stuff to every outlet, faucet, climate control device, etc? Unneeded and involves unnecessary complications IMHO.
I watch (actually rewatched) the video and understand what you are saying now. Yep, automation, hiring the right folks, setting up systems/SOPs, and delegation is critical to scaling a business.Automation is better for everyone involved.

Automation can be simple. And no, I don't want everything automated. Just the stuff that the rest of the family wouldn't understand how to operate.Automation is better for everyone involved.

Yes but sometimes things get out of synch and need to be tweaked. The fix itself may be minor but it requires a deep understanding of a complex system. They don't have to understand it. It just works.
It’s a kind of streamed digital protocol for cellular phones without error checking packets… :DI’m still trying to figure out what GSM means and I’m fairly redpilled.
Pasta seeds! Awesome!!!Oh stop playing dumb. I’ll bring heirloom seeds!
I want some steak seeds!!!?Pasta seeds! Awesome!!!
You’ll have to go see the guy with an Oklahoma or Texas accent with the really long rubber gloves.I want some steak seeds!!!?

Not everyone shares our appetite for nerdy details!
I know enough to be dangerous with everything. Electrical, construction, website building, coding, etc the list goes on. As I have gotten older (and slightly more wealthy), I just hire (some) sh!t out. Knowing enough to be dangerous at least allows you to describe the end state that you want and possible courses of action to get there. I don’t like complications. I DIY when I can’t find anybody in a reasonable time period, at a reasonable cost, at a reasonable quality level. Of the three, I’d rather have speed and quality than lower prices. Unfortunately, it’s getting harder to find folks (in all sorts of trades and professions) that match ANY of the three, let alone 2/3.Right
That's why I do all of the tweaking. And all that they have to do is enjoy it. And after I am gone. Someone with the knowledge can use my "system Bible" for any maintenance required.
That's the trouble with documentation - they have to care enough to read it and then know enough to understand it.Right

You need to re-read GSM, got it wrong. You have lived through 5 solar cycles(11 years each), not 5 GSMs. A GSM is when the sun goes quiet and output drops over at least a few 11 year cycles. Empires have collapsed from them. It's no joke. Last GSM was in 1819. Lots of crops where lost. One GSM, there was NO summer. Think about that. Yes they happen. Preppair for it?, thats up to you. Worry over it?, no I don't. I have already prepared for one. Why would you gave to worry if you get ready?Ok looked up grand solar minimum
Just another thing to worry over? It’s not in my circle of control, influence, or confidence. We don’t know what will or won’t happen. While being aware of the phenomena I’ve never heard GSM outside of cellular protocol. Yet at 57yo I apparently have lived through 5 of these things unscathed.
