dump loads

I just listed on the for sale page a couple dump loads, for wind or hydro, I no longer need that may be of interest to some here. I recently added some more solar, and along with my 900 watts of hydro power, all grid tied, when the grid goes down I needed a bit more dump capacity. I use an Outback 3600 watt VFXR (I think it is...) battery based grid tie inverter, which means I can add misc solar power to augment the hydro, it all goes into two small 12 volt batteries (in series) and anything over 25.6 goes into the grid, 24/7. The hydro has no controller, none required, the inverter shunts the power into the grid as fast as it arrives. I do have dual MorningStar charge controllers though they are set up to act as diversion control: when the grid goes down and the battery voltage climbs, they shunt power to the larger dump loads I now have.

I want to use a smaller, upright wind turbine or two to provide heat directly, using electric radiators, hopefully with no battery. Then I'm thinking of one with a battery bank and inverter. Our electric rates have skyrocketed, and we have vastly more wind than we did 10 years ago, especially because we live right on the East bank of the Hudson River. I'm in poor health, so I need simple and inexpensive. The plan is to mount the turbine either directly to the garage roof, or on a mast of some sort, with the mast attached to the garage for support. I'm also thinking about building a couple of Cheap & Dirty solar hot air panels - possibly using it/them to feed the big solar hot air panel we've had for 20+ years. I'd replace the low volume blower with one that can move more air, with the preheated air making that possible...

Attaching to the garage comes with some risks. Garages are not typically designed for loads like this. They're sturdy enough but the details of your attachment to support the tower will matter. It's nothing like attaching a TV antenna tower to your garage. If you know what you're doing I won't say anything to stop you.

Hot air panels - I'd still like to build one of those for my shop, but trees shade it's south wall.
