At EG4 Electronics, we're committed to giving you complete control over your energy future. We understand that true energy independence means having the freedom to manage your system on your own terms, without interference. That's why we've introduced a powerful new feature for our EG4 inverters: the ability to disable remote support. This feature puts you in the driver's seat, giving you full authority over your Energy Storage System while safeguarding your privacy.

Enhanced ESS Self-Reliance

This new feature empowers you to take complete ownership of your EG4 inverter. By disabling remote support, you prevent any external access to your system, including from EG4 technical support and installers. This means:
  • Unrestricted System Control: You, and only you, can modify your inverter settings. This includes grid interaction parameters, battery charging profiles, and operational modes. No one else can make changes without your explicit permission, ensuring your system operates exactly as you desire.
  • Complete Control Over Firmware Updates: You decide when and if your inverter's firmware needs to be updated. This prevents unauthorized updates that could potentially alter your system's behavior or compromise its stability. You have the final say on any changes to your inverter's core software.
  • Enhanced System Stability: Prevent unintended adjustments and maintain consistent performance. Eliminating the possibility of remote modifications safeguards your system from unexpected behavior and ensures reliable operation.
  • Simplified Troubleshooting: You maintain a clear understanding of all system adjustments, making it easier to identify and address any issues that may arise. You are the sole architect of your system's configuration.
Protecting Your Energy Data
We believe your energy data is personal. This feature provides an additional layer of privacy by preventing unauthorized access to your inverter's settings. While operational data may still be accessible for monitoring and support purposes, you retain control over who can modify your system and how it operates.
How to Enable It
  1. Access the Inverter Menu: Navigate to the "Settings" or "System Control" menu on your EG4 inverter's display interface.
  2. Locate "Remote Support": Find the option labeled "Remote Support" or "Remote Access."
  3. Disable Remote Support: Select the option to disable remote support. This may involve toggling a switch, selecting "Off," or confirming your choice.
  4. Save Changes: Confirm and save the changes to activate this feature.
Important Notes
  • On-site Support: Disabling remote support means any troubleshooting, maintenance, or firmware updates will require on-site assistance from a qualified technician.
  • Temporary Re-enablement: If you require remote assistance from EG4 technical support, you can temporarily re-enable remote support for diagnostics and troubleshooting. However, even with temporary access, EG4 personnel cannot update firmware or change system settings remotely.
  • User Manual: Refer to the user manual for your specific EG4 inverter model for detailed instructions and any model-specific information.
Conclusion
EG4 Electronics is dedicated to providing energy solutions that put you first. This new feature allows you to fully manage your ESS, ensuring your energy independence and protecting your right to privacy. We believe in empowering you to confidently manage your energy future on your own terms.

So, how does remote access work?
Do you have to locally give access to EG4?
As in
1. click on the screen, to allow.
Or
2. Give a temporary password to EG4.

Or does EG4 (or anyone) just need the serial number?

If I remember correctly a member was working with eg4 support on an issue with his inverter and support accidentally adjusted someone else's inverter settings due to a typo on the serial number....

Lots of words.
The right sounds being made, I think your damage control efforts are sincere.
The only question are will these fixes work

That is a step in the right direction however:

Provide the end user with computer based software that permits the management and monitoring of the Inverter as well as installing/uploading new firmware that is available from your website as a download. You do this with your batteries, why not your inverters.

In addition fully document the communications protocols.

Or does EG4 (or anyone) just need the serial number?

The end-user must set the remote tech support option to "Accept" whenever they want a technician to make remote changes. Once troubleshooting is complete, they would need to change it to "Reject" to prevent any further changes from being made by the remote technician.

Damage control would be Deye and sol-ark, not eg4?
Got the big paint brush out....

No lets look at this words at face value.
The inverters all had the option to be shutout down remotely.

I use a lot of ABB automation. ( by use ai watch the lights blink because I don't actually have access to the inner working of their proprietary software )
I'm not even allowed in it anymore.
ABB has us by the short and curlys and there is nothing much I can do about it.
Maybe it will be a remote access attack that shuts us down ( like iran's Centrifuges )
Maybe some guy with a copy of that will attack all ABB automation.

All I can do is hope some guy in Montreal can log on and bring our systems back up.
back in the day we were secure on our own networks I understood and had access too.

The world is turning into black boxes you never have any idea who can access and what levels of control they have beyond the actual owner of the product.
Modican 25 years ago was completely open to me and I could trouble shoot and change as required..

Much better answer.

Edit: or maybe not.

Im sorry but logging on to a website and clicking a button doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling that it cant be altered remotely. It actually implies the opposite right?

"How to Enable It
Access the EG4 Electronics Monitoring Website: Go to the EG4 Electronics monitoring website and log in to your account." - not buying it

Step 1 should be remove inverter from all forms of internet access.

I thought the accept button was on the inverter screen.
If it's on their server, then he'll no it's not safe.

Can you provide some additional details on how this works and how it's any different from just disconnecting the dongle? An end-user can easily verify that the dongle is unplugged; how can they verify that changing this setting results in no data being sent or commands received?

Per a previous thread, my understanding is that your equipment communicates with your cloud servers using unencrypted, unauthenticated Modbus over the public internet. Does EG4 still consider this an acceptable level of security, for people who prefer the convenience offered by keeping your cloud services enabled? How can you assure privacy when any interloper on the same network, or between the customer and your cloud (including governments and commercial entities known to be engaged in pervasive monitoring), can snoop on the data being sent?

Related (unanswered) question from another thread: are there any plans for an independent security audit, or for a bug bounty program for security researchers? This would go a lot further to reassure customers than just saying "trust us, we're secure."

When remote technical support is disabled, data will still be sent to the server for viewing purposes. However, remote commands will only function if initiated by the end-user associated with the station, specifically for setting changes and firmware updates. Beyond this, I currently have no additional details on how this setting operates. I will share more information as it becomes available.

Can we get the option to add more users but limit their ability? (Unless this is a feature and I’m missing it).

Would like to allow my wife see the data or my buddies without being able to change any settings.

Good on you folks for at least doing something. It's a good first step, but it seems more can be done. For example, why not provide the ability to connect the inverter to a local network only, so that users can monitor and manage their systems using a third-party "app" like Solar Assistant, but without anything built in to "phone home" to EG4 unless the inverter owner enters the correct data?

When these latest EG4 inverters came out, wasn't there a requirement to connect them to the internet for setup/commisioning? Is this still the case?

I believe so. But hopefully they can do it before shipping, if requested?
I only buy equipment that works, straight out of the box.

Connecting the inverters to the internet is not required for setup or commissioning. While some distributors or technical support teams may recommend it to streamline the process, it is not mandatory.

Thanks for providing this option... the next important one... securing Bluetooth. Currently anyone in range can connect to BT without dongle PIN and change parameters that can overload / cause fire or at minimum disable the device (eg: if you have security cameras powered by system....). very dangerous. You could physical secure the system by requiring a pairing process with the Wifi dongle by pressing the button. (in the context of EG4 6000XP off-grid inverter).
