EG4 Solution: Encrypting your Wi-Fi dongle connection

I have advance protection on my Google account... made it very very hard to install. My friend came over today and using the LuxPower app on Apple I was able to turn on TKIP on my existing DJ dongles. Thanks @thecreativeone91 for finding that workaround! I can now party like it's 1999!

Thank you all so much for pointing out this new problem in the EG4 app; I was wondering where the "encryption slider" went to turn on WPA2! Using the LuxPowerView app was the key. I sure hope EG4 gets this regression in their code base fixed soon, it's embarrassing for important features like this to just disappear.

To be clear, it is not WPA2 with AES encryption. It is the older, insecure WPA with TKIP encryption.

The fact that a Pull Request made in it through the lifecycle to allow this to hit production is pretty crazy. Must be no QA testing.

But yeah only TKIP is pretty sad still. I have a scripts for testing out what can be done outside of the app just haven’t had a chance to look at it much.

After doing more research into the risk, it appears that as long as you don't connect any devices to the dongle access point, it's secure, even with only WPA/TKIP. The compromise requires watching an existing client that knows the password re-negotiate the wifi connection. So if you connected any clients to the dongle AP, forget the password in that device.

I'm having a new problem related to this. My router lost power last week and since then the dongle connection has been unreliable when it was rock solid before. I had encryption on the dongle already. When I connect to the dongle network I can't access 10.10.10.1 although I can see it with arp in the terminal. I can only dongle connect through the iphone app but no option to enable encryption there. I tried resetting the dongle via this thread but all that did was remove the encryption I had and no change to the dongle dropping connection. @EG4TechSolutionsTeam what's the solution here?

If your dongle is v2.06, there is no UI anymore. You may want to check your router settings. I've had random problems with my router like that, it was fixed by creating a special 2.4Ghz only SSID, and checking a flag for that SSID to ensure IoT compatibility.

Also, to enable encryption again, you'll need to use the Apple store LuxPower app. There is a new LuxCloud app in the Google Store when I searched just now. Not sure if it would work for this.

No UI???? I hate apps. Weird thing is I don't think I've ever updated the dongle firmware from 2.06 (had that when I installed it). And I've selected both of the networks that show up with the same SSID and still get the same result.

Downloaded and connected with the LuxCloud app but still no option to enable encryption. Looks just like the EG4 app but green.

Which dongle do you have?

Only dongles starting with BA can connect to 10.10.10.1

I have a BJ dongle. Had a BA dongle but that one started getting buggy so I replaced it. I can't say for certain whether or not I set encryption at 10.10.10.1 on the BJ dongle but I can say that there is no option to set it in the iphone app and I have the latest version.

And I just downloaded fresh versions on android and there's no option to set it there either. To me this sounds like @EG4TechSolutionsTeam is working with a debug version of the app or never fully uninstalled the old version before installing the new one and there are fragments of the old lurking around.
Android app versions:
EG4: 1.5.4
LuxPower Cloud: 3.9.7
