EG4 UPDATE CORRUPTED OUR LCD SCREEN- THE SAMSUNG USB MADE A DIFFERENCE & FIXED IT!

I have been told that the only way to clear the corrupted LCD screen on our EG4-18k is to run a repair update that was emailed to us, BUT,
THE UPDATE ONLY WORKS IF WE USE A SAMSUNG BRAND USB DRIVE WITH A 16 GB CAPACITY OR LESS. Ok, fine... Except that I can't find one anywhere but on EBay... from a Sketchy Seller located in China... with only an 83% satisfaction rating and shipping times that are mis-worded and and seem to say it could take over a month to maybe receive my item.... the last email from Signature Solar rep was sorry, I don't have any ideas about where to get the USB that you need. I just emailed her and asked if maybe she could find one at the company and loan it to me... I also emailed EG4 and asked them for help. This is so stupid I can't believe it!
Any ideas? right now we can't view data on the screen or use settings menu except from phone ap or online.

UPDATE: 01/25/2025: Still waiting for Samsung USB to try a 3rd time to get the update, but SigSol has very kindly already started the replacement process. We are hoping that the suggested USB will make a difference, and we won't have to uninstall the unit and reinstall again. Otherwise, we are using the Ap and online monitor center to watch what's happening on the days that we have the inverter on. Staying on grid mostly due to PNW cloudiness, but running and charging during daylight hours only on sunny days. No point in using public utilities to recharge batteries since we can just work around the Sunshine available. Only allowing discharge when we know the next day will be good to charge. If I don't forget to power down soon enough, we can often get by on just solar for4- 5 hours or so and not deplete the batteries much.

UPDATE: 1/282025 - SCREEN IS WORKING AFTER USING A SAMSUNG USB! It had to be reset to DOS and partitioned, maybe something else as my techie installer did it for me. Bottom Line, we are up and charging and able to view the screen and use the setting on the inverter screen.
The nightmare is over, and now the guessing games can stop I suppose. If we get charged to 100% today, we may even run off grid for a few hours tomorrow before clouds descend again until Monday. Unfortunately, our lovely neighbor's woods block the lower sun path too much to be off grid durng the PNW winter season. Every day now though, we get a wee bit less blockage though but mostly our system is just for back up in the winter. In summer we make great power and so much cleaner than the crappy public utilities out here.

Never heard of a device care what the brand of the USB drive is ...not sure you have that right. @EG4TechSolutionsTeam is this accurate? I do understand drive size requirements, but you should be able to use the next-closest size (e.g. 64gb) and only create a 16gb partition, formatted with the correct filesystem.
Yes, probably the old FAT32 :)

Any USB drive will do at all, just make sure you follow the specific formatting instructions, they are critical. It has to be FAT32 and there's something else.
The instructions should be in the file they sent you.

Any USB brand should work. As long as it is 16GB and configured to FAT32 it will work.
Download the firmware again and reinstall it, it should fix the issue.

If you have issues doing this, feel free to reach out and we can guide you through this process.

Any USB brand should work.

Not so much. Get the cheapest smallest POS USB you can find. Don't get one of the fancy ones with autobackup, or tools and other BS. I have a SAN DISK 8G that will not work but the 10 pak for $10 chinese junk stick worked flawlessly. Blue 8G, I left it in the cabinet for future use! Make sure it doesn't have multiple partitions, and GPT partitions will not work either. Has to be a legacy DOS/WIN partition table. I'm a linux guy, I did a 'dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=1024k count=16' then partitioned it from scratch with a DOS MBR 1 partition the whole disk 'mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/sdb1', then dumped the files on it with windows because it has files on it with funky names the cli unzip didn't like, probably DBCS or something. YMMV.

I gotta say though, that this is a classic EG4 software move, further evidence that LuxPower has farmed out their software development to Elbonia and taken EG4 (and the rest of us) along for the ride:

The instructions are in one place:

The download is in another:

Some random tech support person told @Michele Cameron she must use an unobtainable USB drive, when that's just not true.

The instructions (see above) say that after unzipping the .zip file above:
"NOTE: There should be 2 folders and one PDF in this folder."
THERE'S NO PDF! It's probably (supposed to be) the instructions above, but who knows?

[TL:DR copy the entire DWIN_SET directory to a 16G or smaller USB drive formatted for FAT32 in a single partition]

The inverter needs to be shut down and booted with the USB drive in the USB port. I need to plan on an hour on grid power (which is two brief power interruptions, but SWMBO kinda bought into the concept of zero power interruptions) to do displays on both inverters before I do the latest firmware updates, which are non-reversible.

The release notes for which should be easy to find under https://eg4electronics.com/resources/downloads/ but of course it's a White Paper at:
https://eg4electronics.com/wp-conte...ngeLog-1E1E-Firmware-Benefits-At-A-Glance.pdf which points to:
https://eg4electronics.com/categories/#INVERTERS and tells you to navigate to (eventually the above).
where yeah, of course it mentions that you must do the display update first. But only if you want GridBoss or RGM WattNode support, neglecting to mention that it's also necessary if you want to see and use the display.

See:
for a discussion of these same issues early LAST year!

Not anymore, somewhere along the lines that process became automagic as soon as you plug the memory stick into the update port.
However if you are upgrading to inverter firmware 1E1E you must also upgrade the display to version 18 and then make sure you do a final reboot so that the inverter and the display are talking the same lingo.

We followed all the instructions perfectly... twice, with a tech consultant on the line in real time... after the 1st time, when the screen became corrupted, we were instructed to use a higher quality USB such as SanDisk... Re redid the process, again with a tech on the phone just to be sure it was done correctly and because we thought that if there were continued problems, we would get immediate help... the screen got worse and they were "going to get back to us soon" and we should text photos of the screen... we did, and we waited... and waited.... Now we were told that a Samsung USB 16 G or less is the best chance for success... Turns out my installer can partition an available USB with more GB can be partitioned and used. Hope to get one at office depot tonight.... It will be great if it works, but I am doubtful.... oh, and a different agent emailed me a pdf with instructions, which only detail exactly which steps we already did.... twice.

yes, plan to get one, not sure why Samsung is insisted upon as best, but will try it as the screen is illegible at this point.

I had 1E1E on mine and put the usb in and magic happened and the LCD just started working with version 18 almost immediately.

I only had to reboot to get their website and the modbus to report the correct LCD version (nothing actually critical).

I seriously doubt the brand, type, size of the USB drive is the issue here. That's a red herring.

It is standard level 1/2 tech support cargo culting...we did it exactly this way with this hw and these versions and it worked so this must be the exact right way and since you did not EXACTLY follow our instructions that is why it did not work.

Most tech support for just about every product I have dealt with is exactly this clueless.

They certify that exactly this set of versions works together and if yours does not work it is because of a version difference, not because our certification was so sloppy that it does not work in the certified environment either(this is usually the case)...

I'm a 'shred' kinda guy, can never remember the incantations required for dd
shred -f -n0 -v -z /dev/sda
fdisk /dev/sda
<instructions from https://www.redips.net/linux/create-fat32-usb-drive/ and @ksmithaz1 above, ending with>
mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/sda1
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/scratch/
cp update.zar2 /mnt/scratch
umount /mnt/scratch/

THANK YOU so much for this, my 3D printer wouldn't do its firmware update, (because it had two partitions?) but I did the above and it's updated!

obligatory XKCD:

Good to know, thanks. Of course, the documentation isn't up to date.

Also good to know, I've got to write up a bunch of this stuff for my heirs (how to switch between grid and inverters, how to trigger and recover from RSD, etc) with pictures of things in different states, so that'll be something to take into account. Gotta wait till My Favorite Wife is off-island.😇

Good luck.

I checked last night and I have some random no name 2 GB memory stick that I have devoted to this purpose, it is now stashed inside one of the 18K PV inverters for the next round of updates.
