Electrician cost, is this normal now?

Sometimes you quote a job high because you don't really want to do it, but you had to look at it qlmost always when you can you look at a job and see if it will fit to a slot where its easy to get done.

Lots of reasons a quote might be high or low..
Definitely
Electricians are in high demand in my area.
I pick and choose the jobs I want to do.
If I have to at least give a bid for something I don't want, the price is tripled.
Then if I still get the job (which actually happens sometimes), I am more than happy to do it for that much money.

If our fearless leader and his top buddy really want to make the country great again, all the people they fired could be trained to be appliance repair persons, electricians, plumbers, rough and finish carpenters, drywallers, auto mechanics, HVAC, roofers, cabinet makers, stone cutters, etc. We really could use a lot more choice and availability and competition in these areas.

Nope. They would all be fired on day 1 of any trade for lack of work ethic.

Work ethic has everything to do with how your were raised and little to do with who pays your salary.

I've worked alongside plenty of government workers who were smart, honest, efficient, and busted their asses. And kicked numerous tradespeople off my jobs for being lazy, entlitled, dishonest arrogant jerks. Categorizing whole groups of people like this and writing them off is going to destroy this country.

Some of these people have choosen to not work in physically demanding jobs for a reason.
Many would make it in these trades, but the reality is in order to be productive in the construction trades one has to be able to make independant decisions. Not really the mark of a government employee. And yes, I worked as a taxpayer supported employee for several years and saw what was going on.
In general I would not make a taxpayer supported employee the one at the top of my hiring list, unless they were raised on a farm or worked with one of there parents in private business prior to being at the government. I'm sure there are other considerations to make, but thats what I hired a personel director for.

I bet plenty of those folks gave 8 for 8. To make such a blanket statement that all fired government employees are lazy really shows ignorance.
it was just a joke, sure theres some good ones.

I have worked with lots of government employees in the FAA, Aircraft Certification and the NTSB. The local inspectors are good but the higher ups are useless. They've been working from home since covid and get almost nothing accomplished. Sometimes i file documents that take months to get processed vs pre covid was almost instantly (24hours). Ive even talked to a few on the phone getting issues resolved and theres dogs barking and a TV on in the background, the conversation always ends with "send me an email". Its obvious theres no work being done.

My dad ran a construction company building houses for 40 years. Anyone who slacks off in the trades was fired by Friday.

Start now and in 10 years they will be good at it....

Some of those aren't even jobs anymore.
I don t know if you can make a living fixing residential appliances.

If they take a price that is triple your normal, I am thinking they have other estimates and the others makes yours look like a bargain. LOL

Not sure. I (try) to fix my own though. I replaced a leaking water valve on our 20 year old front loader in January (on inauguration day lol), and recently the drum bearing went bad and started sounding like a jet engine. I have a bearing set on order, this should be a fun job.

I don't want to spend hundreds on a new washer if I can fix it for 50 bucks and a couple hours of my time.

Probably not. What you'd have to charge would make sense just to buy a new one. Even working residential as a tradesman what you have to charge to make a buck would make most folks head spin. Which is why the OP posted in the first place.

A fella bought the roof air off my truck camper and was an appliance repairman. He bought the roof air for his daughter's food trailer. He thought about a mini split but didn't have any wall space to mount the inside unit.

We talked shop and he told me he is very busy and people are very grateful he even shows up. It seems no one is in the appliance repair business anymore. He told me he can charge whatever he wants and they gladly pay it, which is the same for me with equipment HVAC repair.

I thought about quitting but currently building a new work trailer. If they are willing to keep paying me what I want for the job, I'll keep working even though I am cutting back.

I do very well. Busy weeks are 5 figure profit, that's how I pay for expensive hobbies like solar.

Nobody else wanted it either. lol
I had an account for a short time with cranes that needed HVAC repair. It was always a rush job on equipment with leaking hydraulics and never washed. Plenty of climbing and tight spots.

I increased the rate considerably after the first trip. That account was not missed one bit, they decided their worthless repair crew could attempt to fix it. If they fixed the HVAC like the hydraulics, the crane operators had to run with the windows open.

I have customers that I take very good care of. And they pay me well for it.
I have enough work from my regulars that I don't need new customers.
So I am able to be choosy about what extra work I take.
I keep saying that I am going to slow down, but I like money too much. lol
I've serviced a large majority of the HVAC accounts since 1998. They were concerned I might quit.

The money anymore is just a side benefit for me. I enjoy what I do- most days.

Well, a lot of very good posts I'd say. Well done to all.

I have been arguing with my wife that the pathway that humanity is currently following is what results in the future being exactly as depicted in the original movie "Planet of the Apes" starring Charleton Heston. Remember near the end Chuck proclaims his disgust at those damn fools who blew it all up!

So I say we need to act now to identify the existing primates who will become the future leaders of this new ape planet.
