Florida Neighbors Prepare for Hurricane - How are you getting ready?

Last edited:
Latest models show almost a direct hit in the Tampa area. Yikes. Only saving grace is that the storm will be weaker because of some shear as it nears landfall. Best wishes and prayers for all y'all.

We lost power for two days last weekend from Helene. Batteries did OK the first day/night, but lack of sun meant they didn't get recharged the next day. Need to get a backup way to charge the batts in such a situation. Looking at a ~4KW generator + Chargeverter.

Or get more batteries..

ECMFW shows bradenton
ICON shows sarasota
GFS shows almost 100 miles north of those two, around spring hill or something

6500 is a common generator. It would run at 4K pretty good. Can't trust them to run full power for to long. My predator has been a good unit. I would like to get a 13K or 15K if possible. Watching the sales.

I can't look any more, Got to get some sleep. Everything will be different in the morning. Cat 5 headed for Ft Myers overnight... Like a foot ball game and you bet against it hitting your house.

The worse scenario would be if it hits just north of Tampa, that would shove a lot of water up Tampa Bay. I don't think it'll be a cat 4, maybe 3 at worse, but if it's as big as Helene, the storm surge will be pretty bad. Could be a bad Thursday morning.

If it goes into Tampa Bay it will me massive residential and infrastructure damage. No where good to go. Sarasota or Bradenton would be a war zone. Most of the state will get flooded for a while.

6am update indicates Milton has reached cat 3 status with winds of 120mph. I went from 90 to 120 overnight. Was at around 985mb and dropped down to 954mb pressure wise. It may reach 145mph tomorrow afternoon, but will encounter shear after that, so it won't be as strong when it makes landfall early Thursday, but still may be a cat 3 storm. Models I've seen look like it will hit near Pinellas county. Not good.

Going to pack up everything tight with the RV and leave the moat and head for the house, may be a few feet of high water but with everything rolled up should be above to weather the storm … and it will be here if the power fails in this area… set SOC eating to 85-95 cause I can’t not figure out if this 6000xp actually has a UPS mode… if so I can’t find it please let me know if you know how to turn it on..

Are those panels just resting on the folding chairs?

Good luck, but never make changes as you are leaving, Murphy will ensure the worst-case result.

Looking like a buzzsaw, with a pinhole eye developing. Now at 940mb and 150mph, so it's only 7mph from a cat 5 storm now, and it hasn't even hit the warmer water of the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Better hope it scrapes off the Yucatan or it'll get even stronger. But, it's probably going to peak in a day before landfall where it should weaken. Hopefully.

It’s now a CAT5

I hope for everyone's sake that the anticipated weakening happens before landfall. Even if it does this storm is building up quite the water pumped up. I would expect catastrophic rain amounts and heavy tidal surge. I also see it has again moved North in terms of where it may hit. Tampa is back in the bullseye.
Gonna be nasty wherever it ends up.

If Tampa Bay gets 10 feet of surge, a lot of people will die.
St Pete and Clearwater could get 10 feet too.
I'm near Clearwater in Palm Harbor.
We are about 1/2 mile from the Gulf but at 65 feet elevation so surge won't effect us.
I don't plan to evacuate.
They could get a lot more than 10 ft of surge if this thing hits as a Cat 4. Glad you're at high elevation. Stay safe. You have some rough times ahead. Keep us posted when you can.

Best of luck, be prepared to go 2 weeks without power/water.

Not sure which is most accurate for hurricanes, usually it is ECMFW but I've only watched them for like 5 years
HRRR ironically north americas most advanced one, by far the worst from what I've seen the last year or 2

On wednesday at 6pm I'll look back on this post, and see who was the closest cuz NAM for example is like 250 miles to the west of the others
