I must second or third the mini split option for amazing cooling efficiency. Once we have our 500sq foot cabin cooled that thing uses anywhere from 100w to 500w. We also installed the Mr. Cool 12k mini split and so far it has worked flawlessly.
I like the idea you have going but for a large 3-4 ton central AC unit I think the logistics are just going to be very difficult to workout but it doesn't hurt to try to develop a system that could meet your needs. How many sq feet are you trying to climate control?
