Yes. In my mind, it's not, "how little can I do and get away with it", it's more, "what's the best thing I can do for my equipment to prolong it's life". Even non-Ethanol fuel will degrade, the stabilizer just prolongs the aging a bit. Stabilizer is cheap, why not throw some in the fuel?Related to this, for people using fuel stabilizers, let me ask this: Are you using fuel stabilizer with 100% ethanol free gas?
I have heard some stories of stabilizer in a tank itself degrading and forming a sludge. Not sure if those are true or if certain brands might be at fault.Yes. When I use stabilizer, which is rarely, it's Stabil marine. I prefer to get the gas out of everything that will be sitting, even from my chainsaw.I have heard some stories of stabilizer in a tank itself degrading and forming a sludge. For me it's just been an "isn't broke so why fix it" type of deal. I do think I have a container of Sta-bil around here though. Maybe I'll throw some in the walk-behind mower at the end of next season.
Note that Sta-Bil has a shelf life after opening…I have heard some stories of stabilizer in a tank itself degrading and forming a sludge. Not sure if those are true or if certain brands might be at fault.

yeah kinda like that 3,000,000 year old sea salt taht expires within a year after purchase? some people are just cattle.Note that Sta-Bil has a shelf life after opening…
So the color change after sitting on the shelf for a year after opening doesn't bother you?yeah kinda like that 3,000,000 year old sea salt taht expires within a year after purchase? some people are just cattle.
sta bil or salt?So the color change after sitting on the shelf for a year after opening doesn't bother you?
I've been using Stabil for years and my tanks and carbs are spotless. But I also don't let the same fuel sit in a device for years. If the fuel is more than a year old and no consideration of using it in the next 6 months, it gets changed out. The old fuel gets put in the truck.I have heard some stories of stabilizer in a tank itself degrading and forming a sludge. Not sure if those are true or if certain brands might be at fault.
Interesting. Hadn't heard that before, although I did notice when I spilled Stabil on the tank one time, it did etch the plastic.I have used sta bil for years too and I have found one thing I had problems with from it. The plastic gas tanks on some of my mowers gave off a white resin in the fuel bowls when left there for a long time. Clogged up the jets on the carbs. The biggest problem is once it started doing it the time needed to get it to stop doing it meant a ton of carb cleanings. Annoying. I quit using it after that and the problems went away.
One of us has lost the threadsta bil or salt?![]()
