How often do you run your genset just to "keep things moving"?

you should treat it for microbial growth if its just sitting.
Very important for stored Diesel fuel!
I do a biocide treatment for the generator fuel every year.
Some of the fuel has been in the drums for years, color has changed (dark), but it still
works fine in the genset.

The ideal stationary/back up, UPS Generator would be something like a small robust Kubota low boy II, converted to propane at the factory.
Propane can sit indefinitely without any affect.

Mine gets run about twice a year. I normally power my electric chainsaws with it and trees fall about twice a year :)

Related to this, for people using fuel stabilizers, let me ask this: Are you using fuel stabilizer with 100% ethanol free gas?
Yes. In my mind, it's not, "how little can I do and get away with it", it's more, "what's the best thing I can do for my equipment to prolong it's life". Even non-Ethanol fuel will degrade, the stabilizer just prolongs the aging a bit. Stabilizer is cheap, why not throw some in the fuel?

I have heard some stories of stabilizer in a tank itself degrading and forming a sludge. Not sure if those are true or if certain brands might be at fault.

For me it's just been an "isn't broke so why fix it" type of deal. I do think I have a container of Sta-bil around here though. Maybe I'll throw some in the walk-behind mower at the end of next season.

When I use stabilizer, which is rarely, it's Stabil marine. I prefer to get the gas out of everything that will be sitting, even from my chainsaw.

I have multiple gensets from a suitcase inverter to a three phase 10kw denyo diesel unit. the suit case unit I use it, then drain/empty the tank and run it dry and then put it away until it is needed next. nothing else. the diesel i use it at least 2-3x a month to power heavier equipment so it never sits long enough to worry about. one thing I will say Japanese diesel fuel is extremely clean, i yet to see any growth in any of my tanks of fuel on any of my diesel powered gear.

the above being said if it is a diesel it can sit for months and then be started warmed up run under a moderate load long enough to remove any moisture form the crankcase call it an hour or two at half load and then shut down refill the tank and ignore it for another 6 months...

Note that Sta-Bil has a shelf life after opening…

I've been using Stabil for years and my tanks and carbs are spotless. But I also don't let the same fuel sit in a device for years. If the fuel is more than a year old and no consideration of using it in the next 6 months, it gets changed out. The old fuel gets put in the truck.

I'll bet those stories are from someone using ethanol fuel. Even with a stabilizer, ethanol fuel will start to gel eventually.

I have used sta bil for years too and I have found one thing I had problems with from it. The plastic gas tanks on some of my mowers gave off a white resin in the fuel bowls when left there for a long time. Clogged up the jets on the carbs. The biggest problem is once it started doing it the time needed to get it to stop doing it meant a ton of carb cleanings. Annoying. I quit using it after that and the problems went away.

Interesting. Hadn't heard that before, although I did notice when I spilled Stabil on the tank one time, it did etch the plastic.
