How to customize settings for Morningstar SCC's

I connected the RS-232/USB adapter cable between my computer and the Morningstar Tristar Trakstar SCC but the computer doesn't see the SCC. The adapter has seen better days so that might be the whole issue, so I will get one a new one soon. But in case the cable isn't the issue, is there more to this than just connecting the cable and opening the MSView app? My computer is only two years old, so I doubt that that's the issue. Walk me through customizing the settings of the SCC if you please, and thank you.

Yes I remember it seemed a bit fussy and light on instructions. Been at least five years because it just keeps working. Programming is done in the app and loaded to the controller through a read/write function. Need to set the dip switches for programming vs a canned setting. Seemed to need to be turned off or suspended to read the data file, program and then update the file in the controller. All is done in the app. I use the 232-USB adapter also as I could not get the ethernet cable to work.
