As the title states, I'm curious if the communication function of many of the server rack batteries from the big brands is simply a function of a more complex BMS or if there is something more to it.
I've been thinking about this because it seems that there are lots of deals on reasonably good 48V 100ah server rack batteries for around $700-$800. Conversely, the same capacity battery with a couple of RJ45 ports is ~ $ $500 more. Granted, there are other bells and whistles included for that premium, but I'm curious if it would be cost-effective to swap out the BMS of a dumb battery to gain the communication option.
